(CI. 51-103) This invention relates to improvements in grinding machinery and has particular reference to an improved mechanism for use in grinding both the periphery and adjacent face or shoulder portion of work pieces having more than a single diameter.
One of the principal objects of the present invention is the provison of an improved controllable mechanism which may be utilized for either traverse or direct infeed or plunge cut type of grinding and in which the same grinding wheel may be employed for shaping the periphery of a rotary work piece for example and may also be utilized for cleaning up the face or shoulder of a projecting portion of the same work piece.
An additional object of the present invention is the provision of an improved mounting for a grinding wheel spindle and control mechanism for effecting a desired reciprocating or shifting movement of the spindle with respect to its associated bearings.
An additional object of the present invention is the provision in connection with grinding mechanism as aforesaid employed either in a center or centerless type grinding of an improved associated mechanism for formation of the operative face on the grinding member.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification'considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the structural details hereinafter disclosed within the scope of the appended drawings without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of one form of grinder embodying the improvements forming the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the grinding wheel spindle and face truing mechanism therefor as on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section illustrating the control cam as on line 4-4 of Figure 3.
, designates the bed of a machine of the general centerless grinding type having supported at one end thereof the wheel guard housingd l circum- .which is journaled regulating wheel 22 located in opposition to the grinding wheel and adapted 'to have its axis tilted with respect to that of the grinding wheel in such manner as to create a feed component urging .the work inwardly toward I the machine as viewed in Figures 1 and 2. The
work piece proper comprises a member having a cylndrical portion 23 supported by the work rest i blade24 carried'hy bracket !8, and having an over-hanging head or plate portion at 25. The present invention is utilizable either in connection with a centerless grnder such as illustrated or alternatively with a center type grinding machine in which a different mechanism is utilized for supporting and rotating the work piece while maintaining it against undesired longitudinal or axial movement. In the present instance the tilt of the regulating wheel exerts a feed component on' the work holding the work toward the stop or end movement limiting member 26 suitably associated with the work rest bracket or bed portion of the-machine. This action holds the work against endwise movement in the machine during grinding.
It will be noted that the particular work piece shown has a small cylindri'cal portion disposed in the grinding threat with an enlargement or head -25 at the forward end. It is therefore, preferable that suitable steadying means such as the shoe 21 be utilized for preventing, chatter or tilt of the work on its support.
In the operation of the machine the work and grinding wheel are given a suitable feeding movement one toward the other to cause the periphery of the grinding wheel to suitably grind the cylindrical body portion 23 of the work. In addition it is desired that the inner face of the head or shoulder of the work be given a suitable face grinding. i
To facilitate performance of this operation the spindle l3 supporting the grinding wheel l2-'is mounted for both rotation and axial sliding or reciprocating movement within the bearings M. The spindle is further formed with a reduced terminal portion as at 28 on which is seated .the
anti-friction bearing ring 29 for .the ball or similar anti-friction bearings 30, outwardly engaging the Washer 3! mounted on the shouldered terminal portion of the spindle. The spindle has a threaded extension 32 beyond the shoulder for engagement with the elongated nut member 33 which serves to properly clamp the Washer in place and retain the bearingas an entirety against outward displacement. Circumscribing this unit 33 is a second hearing ring 34 while interposed between the ring and Washer are a second set of antifriction bearings 35.
Circumscribing nut 33 is a sleeve 36 slidably mounted in the interior of a second circumscribing sleeve 31 having an interned flange or rib 38 loosely surrounding the reduced terminal portion 28 of the spindle and inwardly engaging the Washer 39 forming a part of the general inner anti-friction bearing on the spindle.
Exteriorly the sleeve 31 has a redueed portion as at 40 receiving a spring 4! which bears at one end against the abutment 42 set in a recess 43 in the member and bearing at its opposite end against shoulder 44 of the sleeve. It will be noted that this is a heavy coil spring and on account of the arrangement described' tends to press the spindle outward or to the right as viewed in Figure 3. On account of the interposition of the anti-friction bearing members 30 the spindle will rotate freely irrespective of any pressure thereagainst. The 'journal !5 is provided with a tubular extension 45 within which the 'sleeve member 31 slides, this member having a shoulder as at 45 which will positively limit the outward movement of the sleeve and thus of the beaing associated therewith.
The outward movement however is further variably limited by means of a rock shaft 41 carried by the extension 45 and bearing a cam member 48 having a flat face as at 49 normally, terminally engaging plug 50 in the end of sleeve 36 as shown in Figure 4.
On oscillation of shaft 41 through the medium of handle 5l the cam will be turned causing the eccentric rounded face 52 thereof to bear against the plug camming the spindle inwardly or toward the left and thus causing a movement of the grinding wheel in that direction. This move- .ment of the grinding wheel is readily controllable by the handle and may be effected in sufiicient amount to cause the face 53 of the grinding wheel to engage and properly -to abrade {the shoulder or head at the terminus of the portion 23 of the work piece previously ground.
It will be' noted that the thrust Component exerted by the regulating wheel issuificient to maintain, the work piece againstaxial or outward movement during pressure of the grinding wheel there-against.
The eccentric'ty of the portion 52 of the cam is such as to permit of considerable longitudinal or axial movement of the grinding wheel shaft and in fact a movement considerable in excess.
across@ -It will be understood that machines of the general nature here disclosed are intended for precision grinding Operations with th'e result that the wheel surface must be as near perfect as possible and maintained in a free cutting condition. To attain this result the housing H shown as provided with suitable truing mechanisms for operation respectively on the face and the periphery of the grinding wheel. The mechanism for truing or preserving the operative peripheral surface of the grinding wheel includes a bracket 55 carried by the housing l i and supporting a transversely movable slide 56 actuable by hand wheel 51 and screw5e to traverse the face of the wheel. Slide 56 bears the longitudinal adjustable plung er 59 having at one end the truing .diamond 60, and at the other engaged by the adjusting screw 5! for determining its inward fective position. p V
In a'ddition the housing bears a second bracket member 62 in which is slidably mounted a plunger 63 suitably keyed or held against rotative movement and hearing at its lower end a slide block 64 adjustable by screw 65 for determining the position of the diamond 66. Plunger member 63 is formed with a rack 51 meshing with pinion 68 rotatable by hand .wheel 69. Withthe spindle held to 'the right `by pressure of the spring 4! the diamond is movedin or out as is necessary by adjustment of screw 65 and block 64 to just engage 'with the face of the grinding wheel. Rotation of wheel 69 then causes an up and down or radial movement of the diamond with respect to the face of the wheel properly truing off same for said operation on the shoulder or head of the work piece so that this face of work circumscribing the ground cylindrical portion therecf will be produced absolutely, normal to the axis of the body of the work.
From the foregoing description the construction and operation of the present improved grinding machine should be readily understood and it Will be noted there has been provided a machine in which there are means for supporting and rotating a shouldered or other work piece, for restricting axial movement of the wo-rk piece during grinding and for facilitating the performance of simultaneous or successive grinding operations on the body and the adjacent shoulder of the work piece, together with means for establishing and maintaining the operative lateral and peripheral faces of the grinding wheel in satisfactory condition for grinding the respective parts referred to and with a sharp or substantially non-filleted corner at the intersection i of the two surfaces and a machine which will produce these surfaces at absolute right angles one to the other.
In a more specific aspect it will be noted that a mechanism has been provided of a type in which the workbeing supported on a work rest between grinding and regulating wheels will definitely es-' tablish its axis and be produced to true cylindrical form and which by a subsequent slight Shifting or manipulation of certain portions of the.
machine a second surface may be formed' and produced on the work in deflnite and predetermined relation to a previously preformed surface without the necessity for duplicate handling of the parts transferre'd from one machine to the other or the like.

A centerless grinder for operation on a work piece having a plain portion and a lateral portion to be ground comprising a bed, a pair of opposed grinding and regulating wheels carried thereby and forming a grinding threat therebetween; the grinding wheel having a peripheral abrasive face and a lateral abrasive fa'ce,.means within the grinding throat for supporting the work piece for rotation, a housing for the regulating wheel, means pivotally supporting the housing whereby the regulating wheel may be tilted to exert an axial feeding Component on the work piece, a. stop limiting the axial movement of the work piece, a spindle for the grincling wheel, a. housing, bear.- ing carried by the housing for the spindle, the grinding wheel, spindle, housing and bearings constituting a grinding wheel unit,' means for shifting the grinding wheel unit transversely of the bed in the direction of the spindle axis and additional means for axially shifting the spindle independently of the housing and bearings.
4. A grinding machine comprisin'g a bed, a work support on the bed, mean s restricting axial movement of the work on the support during grinding, a wheel head supported by the bed, a spindle journaled in the head, a grinding wheel supported by the spindle, means for shifting the head and supported parts as a unit relative to the bed in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the spindle, means for additionally axially shifting the spindie and grinding wheel independently of the head, said means including a manually actuable cam for shifting the spindle in one direction, and yieldable means for shifting the spindle in the oppositc direction. l

In a centerless grinder the combination of a pair of opposed grinding and regulating wheels forming a grinding threat therebetween, a work support subtnding the grinding threat, a wheel head for each of the wheels, a spindle for each wheel rotatably supported by the wheel heads, means for adjusting one of the wheel heads in a direction axially of its spindle, and additional means for. axlally adjusting the spindle independently of the movement imparted thereto by the wheel head.
6. In a centerless grinder the combination of a pair of opposed grinding and regulating wheels forming a grinding throat therebe'tween, a work support subtending the grinding threat, a wheel head for each of the wheels, a spindle for each wheel rotatably supported by the wheel heads, means for adjustlng one of the wheel heads in. a direction axially of its spindle, additional means for axially adjusting the spindle independently of the-movement imparted thereto by the wheel head, said means including 'a cam carried by the wheel head for movement therewith and inde pendently thereof, a lever for actuating the cam, and spring means for maintaining contact between the spindle and cam.
