ATTACHMENT FOR SMOKERS PIPES Filed Aug. 25, 1934 VENTOR IN Jacob J Siark 2M 20% ATTORNEY Patented Aug. 6, 1935 ATTACHMENT FOR SMOKERS PIPES Jacob J. Stark, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application August 25, 1934, Serial No. 741,377
2 Claims.
The present invention relates to attachments for smokers pipes and is more particularly directed toward a device adapted for use in the bowl of a pipe to receive and hold the tobacco away from the inner walls of the same.
The present invention contemplates an attachment for this purpose so arranged as to cool the smoke and to permit the use of a replaceable cotton or fibrous wad through which the smoke passes. This wad filters the smoke and re.- tains the tobacco juices which would otherwise enter the smokers mouth.
The attachment contemplated by the present invention is one which may be merchandized as a separate article and it will fit into pipes of approximately the same bowl size, even though they be not exactly alike. The pipe itself is not changed in any way and hence no changes need be made in the pipe itself.
The device is inexpensive and its use prevents charring and deterioration of the pipe. It also enhances the appearance of the pipe and permits the burning away of the rim of the pipe.
The accompanying drawing shows, for pur poses of illustrating the present invention, one oi. the many embodiments in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same. In the drawing:
Figure l is a sectional view through a pipe showing the accessory in place; and
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of one preferred form of attachment.
In Figure 1 a conventional form of pipe bowl is shown at in. It has the usual cylindrical receptacle II for tobacco.
The attachment employs a sheet metal bowl [2 having a flange l3 adapted to fit the top of the pipe bowl, and downwardly extending converging walls It somewhat smaller in diameter than the walls of the receptacle in the pipe bowl to provide an air space whereby the bowl is kept cool. The sheet metal bowl is apertured as indicated at [5.
In order to hold the attachment in position in the pipe bowl, it is provided with two crossed 5 U-shaped wire spring members [6 and IT. The ends of these members are welded or otherwise secured to the flange l3. The wires are resilient and are adapted to frictionally engage the side walls of the cylindrical chamber in the pipe bowl. 10 The yieldability of these spring members makes it possible for the attachment to be self-adjusting to fit pipe bowls with different diameters. The attachment may be easily removed and replaced without tools. The wires [6 and I1 cross 15 some distance below the metal bowl and hence room is provided for a cotton wad l8 to catch the drip from the bowl and filter the smoke.
It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions within 20 the scope of the claims, and I wish it to be understood that the particular form shown is but one of the many forms. Various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.
What is claimed is:
1. An attachment for smokers pipes comprising a sheet metal bowl apertured in the bottom and having a peripheral flange at the top, and U-shaped resilient wiremembers having their ends secured to the flange and crossing below the bottom of the metal bowl to afiord space for a filter.
2. In combination, a smokers pipe having a bowl, and an attachment comprising a sheet meta1 bowl apertured at the bottom and provided with yieldable spring fingers to grip the side walls of the pipe bowl, said spring fingers being U- shaped and crossing below the bottom of the sheet metal bowl.
