I. Application December 8, 1934, Serial No. 156,652 4 Claims. (Cl. 229-15) My invention relates to improvements in two ened and out along the dalred lines so that the compartment display boxes and blanks for use in device may be readily folded for use.
the manufacture thereof which may be readily Fig. 7 is a disassembled perspective view show- .stamped and weakened in the desired portions ing the box tray and my improved cover and parthereof to be formed into a combined partition tition member folded and assembled to open osi- 5 member dividing the box into two compartments i n j t prior to be ng inverted to permit attachand cover member having cover portions intement of the tabs thereof to the inner surfaces of grally secured to the upper end of said partition t e tray end walls. member t is apparent t t, by employing my In the drawings, wherein like characters of 10 improved blank I have provided a two compartreference d a like p ts t u h ut, 0 gen 10 ment box which may be fabricated out of two erally indicates a w mp r n display box pieces of cardboard or like material and readily constructed in accordance with my invention. assembled by the operative in a simple folding Said bOX includes a Standard type 0f y process into a combined partition and cover mem- Preferably 6 having ide walls II and end walls her to be readily secured to the tray of the box, IS, the side and end walls in the embodiment 15 My'improved completed box may be constructshown being formed from a blank having extened of any size desired, but in my preferred emsionsprojecting therefrom substantially twice bodiment, it is preferably constructed relatively the depth of the tray and weakened centrally shallow so as to provide a substantially flat shalthereof and having the outer portions 18 thereof 20 low box having two compartments, each for holdinfolded on the inner portions 20 thereof and g0 ing an analogous type of small article, such as said portions 20 up-turned as shown in Figs. 3-5 a fountain pen and mechanical pencil unit, a to form the side walls I4 and end walls 16. size to form the necessary parts thereof and weakfolding board, or like material of greater area 5 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE than said tray infolded centrally thereof at distances equal to the depth of said tray to provide a partition 26 extending centrally longitudinally of said tray forming the compartments 48 on each side thereof and I provide the cover portions 30 of greater area than said compartment tops to provide edges to be downturned to form the cover side and end walls 34 and-36 respectively, the ends of said partition being cut inwardly centrally thereof and along the upper edges of said infolded partition to provide the tabs 28 in length of substantially one-half the width of said tray to be folded outwardly along the inner surfaces of said tray end walls to have the ends thereof abut adjacent portions of the tray side walls and be secured to said surfaces by glue, rivets, stretching or in any other suitable manner to secure said combined cover and partition to said tray to form a compartment box. While I preferably employ the tabs 28, it is apparent that the partition 26 may be secured to said tray l2 along the median longitudinal line thereof in any suitable manner. While I have employed the downturned side walls 34 and downturned end walls 36 of said covers 38, it is apparent that they may be omitted if desired.
My invention also includes an improved type of preformed blank for use in making a combined cover and partition member for the two compartment display box In hitherto described. Said blank 38 comprises a sheet of cardboard, folding board, or like material of greater area than said tray having a line 42 extending centrally longitudinally thereof weakened centrally thereof substantially the length of the tray in any suitable manner, such as by creasing, scoring, or in other manners known to the trade, said line 42 being preferably cut as at 42', substantially beyond the ends of said tray l2. Said blank also has a set of lines 44 extending longitudinally thereof parallel to said center line and spaced on each side of said center line throughout their length substantially the depth of said tray, weakened centrally thereof as at 44 substantially the length of said tray and cut as at 44' slightly within said tray and beyond said ends of said tray to form when said sheet is infolded along said center line 42 and set of lines 44, a central partition 26, dividing said tray into two compartments 48, one on each side of said partition 26 and also forming compartment cover portions 38 projecting laterally from said partition 26 hingedly integrally connected thereto by said weakened fold lines 44 to form the hinge lines 32 and tab portions 28 formed between said cut lines 42 and 44 extending beyond the length of said tray preferably substantially one-half the width of the tray adapted to be bent outwardly laterally to provide means to secure said cover and partition member 24 to said tray end walls.
In my preferred embodiment shown I also preferably provide the side walls 34 and end walls 36 for the cover the ends of said tray as at 46'. It is thus obvious that when the portions 48 beyond said weakened lines 46 are downturned that they may form the cover side walls 34, said sheet being extended laterally for this purpose beyond said second set of lines 46 amounts 48 substantially the depth of said tray to form said cover side walls 34.. To form the cover end walls, said sheet 38 is extended longitudinally between each of said first and second sets of cut lines 44' and 46', amounts 52 substantially the depth of said tray and is provided with inner weakened fold lines 58 extending laterallybetween said cut lines 44' and 46' at substantially the end of said tray to form the cover end walls 36 when downturned along said lines 58.
In the preferred type of cover shown, I have provided outer portions 54 and 64 for the cover ed to be inturned on the inner portions 48 and 52 thereof respectively to provide a neater and For this purpose the sides 58 of said sheets depth of said tray having centrally cut away handle .slot forming portions 68 near the center thereof, whereby the outer portions 54 may be infolded on said inner portions 48 prior to said portions 48 being downfolded to form the cover side walls 34. With this type of construction the sheet is extended longitudinally between each of said first and second set of cut fold lines 44', and 46' substantially twice the depth of said tray and provided with a central weakened fold line 62 extending centrally laterally thereof between said out lines 44' and 46' to provide the outer portions 64 substantially the depth of said tray adapted to be infolded over the inner portions 52 thereof prior to said inner portions 52 being downturned to form the cover end walls 36.
Said sheet 38 in my preferred embodiment, is also extended longitudinally distances 66 outwards between said cut lines 46' and said weakened 38 substantially the walls 34 to said' cover end walls 36 in a more desirable fashion. It is obvious that if desired the tabs 66 may be dispensed with, the infolded portions 54 and 64 of the respective cover side to the cover end walls 36 by staplingppasting, or in any other manner known to the trade. If desired the partition portions 25 may be additionally glued or otherwise secured together as shown at 10 in Fig. 4 and if so secured together may be separated along the central line 42 thereof.
In forming the blank shown in Fig. 6 it is apparent that there is very little waste as the portions of said sheet laterally, diagonally and longitudinally beyond said tabs 66 only are removed, said parts being removed in a cutting or stamping operation and the weakened lines 42, 44 46, 54, 56 and 62 and cut lines 42,
and creasing or scoring machine.
The blanks 38 may then be readily folded in the manner described as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 7 with the tabs 28 projecting outwardly or laterally relative to the partition 26 relative to the tray l2 and it is obvious that the ends of the tabs 28 will abut the side walls I4 lines 56 to form the tabs 66 projecting 1on of the tray to accurately align the partition 26 centrally longitudinally of said tray and that the tabs 28 may be pasted, riveted, or secured in any suitable manner to the inner surfaces of the end walls I6 of said tray, it being apparent that I have provided a novel means for attaching a combined partition and cover member for a compartment box to the tray thereof and in one attaching operation secured both cover members and a partition member to the tray portion of a compartment box.
It is understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment shown and that various deviations may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
