Description

I A. AITKEN VACUUM CLEANER July 16, 1935.
Original Filed May 29, 1933 Elmo/whom r7/e xa/m er zy/i'kew Patented July 16, 1935 UNITED STATES 2.008431 (VACUUM CLEANER Alexander Aitken, Detroit, Mich, assi'gnor to Eureka Vacuum Cleaner Qompany, Mich., a corporation of Michigan Detroit,
Original application May 29, 1933, Serial No.
673,525. Divided and this application SeptembBl 5, 1933, Serial N0. 683,251 I 8 Claims.
The invention relates generally to small vacuum cleaners adapted to be supported by hand and applied to the various objects to be cleaned, and has for its principal object an efficient and simplified connection and support for the dust bag. With this object in View the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter set forth.
This application is a division of my application filed May 29, 1933, bearing Serial No. 673,525.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of the cleaner vrith dust bag attached,
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing a portion of the bag and the means for attaching and supporting the same; and
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure l.
The cleaner may be of any suitable construction comprising a housing A, having a cylindrical portion A containing a suitable electric motor, not shown, an enlarged cylindrical portion A forming the fan housing, and a discharge nipple C to which the dust bag is adapted to be attached. For lifting and manipulating the cleaner a suitable handle D is provided.
The dust bag E may be of any suitable design but is preferably formed with a straight top edge F and a tubular mouth section G adapted to connect with the fan casing. For attaching the dust bag a rigid tube H is placed in the mouth of the bag and is adapted to telescopically engage the nipple C. A bayonet joint lock for this tube is formed by the slot I therein which engages an inwardly projecting pin J in the nipple.
The bag support is formed by a rod K that extends rearwardly from the tube, being attached to the latter by a segmental foot L. This foot embraces the mouth portion of the bag which surrounds the tube, being secured preferably by screws M which pass through the bag and engage threaded apertures in the tube. Thus the foot L not only forms a support for the rod K but also holds the bag from twisting on the tube when the latter is turned to engage the bayonet lock. The rod K passes through a series of loops N which are secured in the seam of the upper straight edge F of the bag, thereby supporting the bag in the desired position.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casing having an outlet nipple, and a dust bag having a mouth portion, of means for at taching: and supporting said dust bag comprising a tube surrounded by the mouth portion of the bag and telescopically engaging said nipple, a
rod provided with a segmental foot for fitting about said tube and the surrounding portion of the bag, fasteners for securing said foot to the tube and thereby clamping the bag from displacement and one or more loops secured to the 5 upper edge of the bag through which said rod is passed.
2. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a casing for enclosing a motor and fan of said cleaner and provided with a rearwardly and upwardly inclined nipple for the discharge of air from the fan, of a dust bag having a mouth portion, and means for detachably connecting and supporting said dust bag comprising a tube surrounded by the mouth portion of the bag and telescopically engaging said nipple, being provided with a bayonet joint locking connection therewith, a rod engaging a series of loops secured to the upper edge of the bag, a segmental foot for said rod embracing said tube. and the portion of the bag surrounding the same, and fasteners for securing said foot to said tube and for clamping the bag thereto against rotative displacement.
3. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casing having an outlet nipple, of a dust bag having a mouth portion, and means for attaching and supporting said bag comprising a tube extending into said mouth portion and engageable with said nipple, a rod extending longitudinally of said bag upon the outer side thereof, means connecting the rod and tube to the mouth of said bag, and means connecting the bag to the rod at spaced points longitudinally thereof.
4. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casing having an outlet nipple, of a dust bag having a mouth portion, and means for attaching and supporting said bag comprising a tube fitting within said mouth portion and attachable to said nipple, a rod upon the outer side of said mouth portion and extending longitudinally of and connected to the bag at the upper longitudinal edge thereof, and means connecting the rod, mouth portion and tube together.
5. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casinghaving an outlet nipple, of a dust bag having a mouth portion, and means for attaching and supporting said bag comprising a tube fitting Within said mouth portion and attachable to said nipple, a rod outside of and connected to the bag at the upper longitudinal edge thereof, and a connection between the rod and tube including means holding the mouth portion of said bag against displacement relative to said tube.
6. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casing having an outlet nipple, of a dust bag having a mouth portion, and means for detachably connecting and supporting said dust bag comprising a tube extending within the mouth portion of the bag and telescopically engaging said nipple, a series of loops secured to the upper edge of the bag, a rod extending longitudinally of the tube and bag, said rod being received within said loops, and a common means for securing said rod to the tube and for clamping the bag thereto against rotative displacement.
'7. In a vacuum cleaner, the combination with a fan casing having an outlet nipple, and a'dust bag having a mouth portion, of means for supporting said dust bag from said nipple comprising a tube extending within the mouth portion of V the bag and telescopically engaging said nipple, a substantially straight non-flexible rod disposed above and extending longitudinally of said dust bag, means connecting the tube and mouth portion of said bag to said rod at one end thereof, and means connecting said bag to said rod at the other end thereof.
8. A vacuum cleaner having a fan casing, a dust bag for receiving dirt, dust, etc., from the fan casing, and means for attaching said bag to and supporting it from the fan casing including an element attachable to the fan casing, a rod outside the bag secured at one end to said element and free at its other end, and means connecting the bag to the rod.
