Abstract

The present invention pertains to a garment having an elongated crotch section combined with seam construction to provide comfort to the wearer. The garment may be boxer shorts comprising 6 pieces. There are two front pieces and two back pieces. The top portion of these pieces can form a waist band. Alternatively the waist band can be a separate sewn piece. The boxers also are constructed with a two piece center section in the design of the crotch of the boxer. The two piece crotch component is designed to be substantially without multiple seams that meet in the inseam of the crotch located in the groin area. The boxer is designed to only have seams that are placed on the sides and a single horizontal seam that connect the two pieces of the crotch portion. This enhances the wearer's comfort. The two piece crotch component also forms an elongated pouch to hold the male genitalia. Again, unlike many other styles of boxers, there is no junction of multiple seams at the groin or inseam of the boxer.

RELATED APPLICATION

This application claim the benefit of and priority to provisional application No. 60/847,257 entitled “Boxer Shorts” filed Sep. 26, 2006. This provisional application is incorporated by reference herein.

BACKGROUND OF INVENTION

1. Field of Use
The garment subject of this disclosure pertains to a novel construction of men's boxer shorts, particularly for enhanced comfort in the crotch or groin area. The construction of the garment may also be more contemporary clothing such as the “Hip-Hop” length. The construction allows a longer inseam for more room and manageability, particularly designed for enhanced comfort in the crotch or groin area.
2. Related Technology
The issues of wearer's comfort has been subject of disclosures such as Men's Underwear Briefs, issued to Mikuni Wada, U.S. Pat. No. 5,598,587.

SUMMARY OF INVENTION

A garment including a front and back garment portion and sewing the front portion to the back portion at the garment sides and forming legs with sewn inseams. A two piece crotch portion comprises a front and back portion. The front crotch portion having a right edge and a left edge and the back crotch portion having a right edge and a left edge are sewn together in a lateral direction. The right side of the front crotch portion is sewn to a left edge of the front garment portion and the left edge of the front crotch portion is sewn to the right edge of the front garment portion. Further, the right side of the back crotch portion is sewn to the left edge of the back garment portion and the left side of the back crotch portion is sewn to the right edge of the back garment portion with the completely sewn crotch portion forming an elongated pouch between the legs of the garment. The construction may contain a longer inseam and a more comfortable design, which includes the innovative two piece center sections (with optional stretch spandex such as Lycra) that provide more room for comfort and manageability.

These drawings, together with the general description of the invention given above and the detailed description of the preferred embodiments given below, serve to explain the principles of the invention.

FIG. 1 illustrates the front of the boxer shorts, including the component portions and location of the seams.

FIG. 2 illustrates the back of the boxer shorts.

FIG. 3 illustrates a perspective view of the boxer shorts subject of the invention showing a single seam in the groin area and the two piece center section that improves quality and fit. The center section may utilize Lycra for a stretchable center that improves manageability.

FIG. 4 illustrates a perspective view of the prior art construction of boxer shorts with 4 seams attached in the groin area.

It will be appreciated that the foregoing drawings 1 through 3 illustrate only one embodiment of the invention and that numerous other variations may be created within the scope of the described invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION

The above general description and the following detailed description are merely illustrative of the subject invention and additional modes, advantages and particulars of this invention will be readily suggested to those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
The garment of the present invention is referred to as boxer shorts (hereinafter “boxer”) but other clothing items may incorporate the invention, e.g., pants, athletic shorts, etc.
In one embodiment of the invention, the boxers may comprise 6 pieces. There are two front pieces and two back pieces. The top portion of these pieces can form a waist band. Alternatively the waist band can be a separate sewn piece. The boxer also includes a center crotch section, which may be of two pieces.
As indicated, the boxers also are constructed with a two piece center section in the design of the crotch of the boxer. The two piece crotch component is designed to be substantially without multiple seams that meet in the inseam of the crotch section located in the groin area. The boxer is designed to only have seams that are placed on the sides of the crotch portion and a single horizontal seam that connect the two pieces of the crotch portion. This enhances the wearer's comfort. There is no single seam running from the bottom end of the fly of the boxer straight to the groin or inseam. The seam is divided by the center section or crotch section. The two piece crotch component also forms an elongated pouch to hold the male genitalia. Again, unlike many other styles of boxers, there is no junction or combining of multiple seams at the groin or inseam of the boxer.
In another embodiment, the boxer comprises a front portion and a back portion, along with the two piece center crotch. This results in a garment comprised of four pieces. The front and back portions may be joined at side seams as is customary with boxers or pants.
The back and front portion form legs for the boxers. The inside seam may be termed the inseam. The inseam is defined as the inner seam of a pair of pants or boxers from the crotch section. The inseam causes congestion and discomfort in the groin area. This is particularly acute where multiple seams intersect, e.g., the second inseam.
The front and back portion also form the circumference for the waist. As discussed, there is a two piece center section (sometimes termed the “crotch section” or “crotch components”) of the boxer covering the crotch area of the wearer. This also has a front piece and a back piece. The front and back pieces are dimensioned to widely fit over the crotch area of the wearer. The front and back pieces also form an elongated space within the boxer between the wearer's legs. The seam holding the two sections of the crotch component may be lateral, i.e., running from on leg inseam to the other. This seam 12 is shown in FIG. 3. Again, there is no junction of multiple seams in the crotch area.
In another embodiment, the garment comprises two portions. Each portion has a front and back component. Each portion forms a half of the garment, i.e., a right half and a left half. The two portions are sewn together in the middle. There is also the crotch portions which are sewn into position between the two halves.
In yet another embodiment, the garment is made of a single piece of fabric. This may be a tube shape with the bottom section split and sewn to form two legs. Inserted into the garment is the two piece or single piece crotch component.
In one embodiment of the invention, the crotch components can be made with stretch spandex such as sold under the trademark Lycra® or similar stretchable material. (Lycra is a registered trademark of Invista North America S.A.R.L.) This along with the insert of a two piece center section can substantially enhance the wearer's comfort.
The invention can be readily explained with reference to FIGS. 1 and 2. These figures illustrate a garment comprised of 6 pieces. The front portions of the boxers consist of two pieces 1, 4. (FIG. 1) The back portion of the boxer comprises two pieces 2, 3. (FIG. 2.)
The right side front and back portions 1, 2 are sewn at the sides or fabric edges 110A, 110B. The other side of the two piece front and back portions 3, 4 are also sewn 115A, 115B. The front and back portions are also sewn at the inseam 120A, 120B and 125A, 125B. The two back portions are joined at a seam 8
The front crotch portion 6 and back portion 5 are sewn to the front and back edges of the boxers. 130A, 130B and 135A, 135B. 145A, 145B and 150A, 150B.
In another embodiment (and as illustrated in FIG. 1), the fly of the boxer is uniquely constructed with the flat horizontal seam at the bottom connecting to the top of the center crotch section. The fly 7 is formed by folding an edge of front left portion 4 and a sight fold on the right 1, both sewn with a horizontal seam at the ends, and with a diagonal seam three quarters at the top near the waist (not shown). The diagonal seam can function for closure. The garment may also be constructed with a button or a hook and loop material.
FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 illustrate the placement of seams distant from the center of the wearer's crotch. This allows for increased room in the crotch area and for greater comfort.
FIG. 3 and FIG. 4 illustrate perspective views of boxer shorts. FIG. 3 illustrates the invention. Illustrated are the two front panels 1, 4 joined at the seam forming part of the flap 7 or “fly” of the boxers. This meeting of fabric panels can include buttons or zippers to create a front opening for the wearer's convenience. It may also include Velcro® hook and loop type fasteners. (Velcro is the registered trademark of Velcro Industries B.V. LTD LIAB CO.) The front panels are also sewn to the front crotch piece 6 at seams joining fabric edges 130A, 130B and 135A, 135B of the center crotch section 6 and the front portions of the boxer 1, 4. The leg portion of the front and back panels are joined at inseams 120A and 125A.
The seam 12 connecting the front 6 and back 5 crotch pieces is also shown.
The seams connecting the front panels to the back panels are shown 110A, 115A and the seam 8 connecting the two back panels are also illustrated. Seam 110A and 8 are shown in phantom. The two back panels are also sewn 145A, 145B, 150A, 150B to the back portion of the crotch piece 5.
FIG. 4 illustrates the prior art. The front 9 and back 8 vertical seams join at the crotch 11. The inseams 120 and 125 also join at the crotch 11. The 4 seams (and accompanying fabric) meet in the crotch section and cause congestion and discomfort to the user. This accumulation of fabric and seams can create a lump that can cause the wearer additional discomfort. One attribute of the present invention is to eliminate this accumulation of fabric in the crotch section.
It will be appreciated that the invention can also be adapted to trousers or pants.
This specification is to be construed as illustrative only and is for the purpose of teaching those skilled in the art the manner of carrying out the invention. It is to be understood that the forms of the invention herein shown and described are to be taken as the presently preferred embodiments. As already stated, various changes may be made in the shape, size and arrangement of components or adjustments made in the steps of the method without departing from the scope of this invention. For example, equivalent elements may be substituted for those illustrated and described herein and certain features of the invention may be utilized independently of the use of other features, all as would be apparent to one skilled in the art after having the benefit of this description of the invention.
Further modifications and alternative embodiments of this invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art in view of this specification.

Claims

1. A garment comprising boxer shorts and further comprising a crotch section extending from the front to the back of the boxer shorts.

2. A garment of claim 1 comprising:

(a) a two piece crotch section having a front and back component and a left garment section and a right garment section further comprising the left and right sections having a front and rear;

(b) the back of the left side sewn to the back of the right side and the front of the left side sewn to the front of the right side;

(c) a front crotch portion having a right edge and a left edge and a back crotch portion having a right edge and a left edge;

(d) the front crotch portion and back crotch portion are sewn together in a lateral seam direction and form an elongated pouch between the legs of the garment;

(e) the right side of the front crotch portion is sewn to an edge of the right garment portion;

(f) the left edge of the front crotch portion is sewn to an edge of the left garment portion;

(g) the right side of the back crotch portion is sewn to an edge of the right back garment portion;

(h) the left side of the back crotch portion is sewn to an edge of the left back garment portion

3. The garment of claim 1 further comprising the crotch portions made from a stretchable fabric.

4. The garment of claim 1 further comprising the crotch portion being a single piece of fabric.

5. The garment of claim No. 1 further comprising a single front section, a single back section and a center crotch section.

6. The garment of claim No. 1 further comprising two pieces and one of said pieces comprising a crotch section of stretchable material.

7. A six cloth piece garment wherein each piece has at least two edges comprising a two piece crotch section, right and left front sections and right and left back sections and further comprising:

a. a first front section sewn along its first edge to a first edge of a back second section;

b. the second section sewn along the second edge to a first edge of a third back section;

c. the second edge of the third section sewn to the second edge of the fourth section, said fourth section being a front section;

d. a first edge of the first front crotch section sewn to a first edge of the back crotch section;

e. a second edge of the second back crotch section sewn to the second edge of the second section;

f. a third edge of the second back crotch section sewn to the second edge of the third back section;

g. a second edge of the front crotch section sewn to the second edge of the first piece;

h. a third edge of the front crotch section sewn to the second piece; and

i. a first edge of the fourth piece meeting a second edge of the first piece form a fly.

8. The garment of claim 7 further comprising a fly containing an angled seam joining the fourth piece to the first piece.

9. The garment of claim 7 further comprising the crotch sections forming an elongated pouch between the wearer's legs and made from a stretchable material.

10. The garment of claim No. 7 further comprising pants.

11. The garment of claim No. 7 further comprising shorts.

12. The garment of claim No. 7 further comprising underwear.

13. The garment of claim No. 7 further comprising basketball pants.

14. A six cloth piece garment illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2 wherein each piece has at least two edges comprising:

a. a first piece (1) sewn along its first edge to a first edge of a second piece (2);

b. a second piece (2) sewn along the second edge to a first edge of a third piece (3);

c. a second edge of the third piece (3) sewn to a second edge of the fourth piece (4);

d. sewing a first edge of the fifth piece (5) to a first edge of the sixth piece (6);

e. sewing a second edge of the fifth piece (5) to a second edge of the second piece (2);

f. sewing a third edge of the fifth piece (5) to the second edge of the third piece (3);

g. sewing a second edge of the sixth (6) piece to the second edge of the fourth piece (4); and

h. sewing a third edge of the sixth piece (6) to the first piece (1).

15. The garment of claim 14 further comprising the fifth piece (5) and sixth piece (6) forming an elongated pouch between the wearer's legs and made from a stretchable material.

16. The garment of claim 14 further comprising a fly (7) including an angled seam holding a portion of the fly closed.

17. The garment of claim 14 further comprising a fly (7) including button closure.

18. The garment of claim 14 further comprising a fly (7) including a hook and loop material.
