Abstract
A protective ring made of a rust proof material (such as plastic, nylon, or rubber) designed to fit snugly to the bottom of shaving cream cans, and other metal cans which may be exposed to water causing the metal can to rust and subsequently leaving rust stains on the surface which they are placed.

- This invention is generally related to the field of rust prevention for goods sold in metal cans used in wet environments (such as the bathrooms, kitchens, or outside), and more specifically to a rust prevention ring which can be mounted onto the bottom of the can preventing the can from leaving unsightly rust stains on the surface which it is placed.
- Every year millions of products are sold in metal containers, also known as cans. These cans are often repeatedly exposed to water, chemicals, and rough handling. After time these cans very often begin to rust along the bottom edge of the can. Even if these cans are sold with some form of protective coating after a short period of time scratches and scrapes usually expose the bare metal to the water allowing the can to rust. As these cans rust they leave unsightly rust deposits on the surface which the can rests. The rust deposits take the shape of rings, splotches, streaks, and spots. These stains are notoriously difficult to remove, often requiring the use of dangerous chemicals, and cleaners. The primary focus on these stains has been how to clean them. This invention attempts to cure and eliminate the problem of rusting cans leaving stains on the surface which they rest.
- The primary object of this invention is to provide a protective ring which easily attaches to the bottom of shaving cream cans, deodorant cans, paint cans, and other goods sold in metal cans to eliminate the unsightly rust stain those cans often leave when they start to corrode. This protective ring should be easy to use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
- The drawings constitute a part of this specification and include exemplary embodiments to the invention, which may be embodied in various forms. It is to be understood that in some instances various aspects of the invention may be shown exaggerated or enlarged to facilitate an understanding of the invention. It should also be understood that the actual dimensions will be based on the target can.

FIG. 4 is a bottom view of the invention showing the water drainage channels - Detailed descriptions of the preferred embodiment are provided herein. It is to be understood, however, that the present invention may be embodied in various forms. Therefore, specific details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but rather as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed system, structure or manner.
- Referring to
FIG. 1 we see a perspective view of the invention clearly showing the overall design and purpose of the invention. We can see the invention is a ring, constructed of a material impervious to rust or corrosion such as ABS plastic, rubber, nylon, carbon fiber, or other similar material. A center groove acts as the mounting space for the target can. The invention is held to the can by friction between the inner and outer wall of the invention and the bottom edge of the can. The ring is held firmly in place, but can be removed when the can is empty and easily reused on a different can. - Referring to Section 1-1 we see a cross section of the invention. This view shows placement of the mounting grove, and the drainage channels.
- Referring to Detail 1-2 we see a 6:1 scale detail view of a cross section of the invention. This enlarged view allows several key features of the invention to be shown. The mounting groove is displayed, as is the down and outward sloping design of the outer edge of the invention. The additional material at the base of the invention is also revealed which is designed to lift the can higher so the metal of the can is exposed to less standing water.
- Referring to
FIG. 4 we see a bottom view of the invention which shows the drainage channels allowing water under the can to escape rather than sit trapped for extended periods by the edge of the can, or ring. These drainage channels allow water to escape rather than be sealed in by the bottom edge of the can. - The foregoing description of the preferred embodiments of the present invention has been provided for the purposes of illustration and description. It is not intended to be exhaustive or to limit the invention to the precise forms disclosed. Many modifications and variations will be apparent to the practitioner skilled in the art. Embodiments were chosen and described in order to best describe the principles of the invention and its practical application, thereby enabling others skilled in the art to understand the invention, the various embodiments and with various modifications that are suited to the particular use contemplated. It is intended that the scope of the invention be defined by the following claims and their equivalents.
Claims (6)
1. A rust proof ring designed to easily mount to the bottom of a metal can and prevent rust spots, stains and circles or marks from being deposited on the surface which the can is resting on.
2. The ring of claim 1 wherein; said ring increases the width of the base of the can providing for greater stability and preventing the can from tipping over as easily.
3. The ring of claim 1 wherein; said ring reduces the rate and amount of corrosion of the can by reducing the amount of water the bottom of the can is exposed to by lifting can higher out of standing water.
4. The ring of claim 1 wherein; said ring reduces the rate and amount of corrosion of the consumer products can by reducing the amount of water the bottom of the can is exposed to by allowing water to freely drain from underneath can via drainage channels.
5. The ring of claim 1 wherein; said ring helps reduce scratches, stains, and blemishes to the surface on which the can rests by acting as a buffer between the hard metal edge of the can and the surface on which the can is placed on.
6. The ring of claim 1 wherein; said ring improves on the safety of the can by preventing or inhibiting the formation of rust which can weaken the overall strength of the can.
