16 Claims. X01. 293554 Thisinvention relates generally to guards or shields for automobile radiators and refers more particularly to those having ornamental grilles 'anjdconstituting auxiliary fronts forthe radiator units or' cores. V
' Heretofore the grilles have been formedintegral'with or independently of and secured as units to theenclosing shellsof the shields. When.in- 'tegraL materiaI iswasted'as a result of the stamping .or forming operati'ens and when formed independently the grilles are bulky and ,cumbersometo handle .andare easilyldamaged before being assembled withthe shells. Consequently such procedure is objectionable; In the present instance, however, the f difiicultie's" just mentioned and experienced in'the pasthave been overcome entirely. Here the Shell is merely flanged inwardly atfthe top and'bottom and the individual bars of the grille are successively ap plied} and secured thereto. In the presentinstance they are individually secured directly to the shell which forms the supporting means, and framing therefor. 'As a result. a simpler and less expensive construction is pro-- vided. What I claim as my invention is: I 1. A radiator shieldlcomprising a shell having an opening therein and provided at the upper, lower and side edgesv of. the opening with rear- .wardly extending flanges, and ag'rille for the opening comprising a series of laterally spaced upright bars individually applied and secured to: the flanges at the upper and lower edges of the opening, tongues projecting from thefianges 55.
2', V at the sides of the opening, and means for reinforcing said upright bars including a crossbar connected to the upright bars and having openings at opposite ends thereof receiving and secured to said tongues.

A radiator shield comprising a shell having an opening therein and provided at the upper, lower and sideiedges of the opening with rearwardly extending flanges, and a grille for the opening comprising a-series of laterally spaced upright bars individually applied and secured to the flanges at the upperand lower edges of the opening, said bars being channel-shaped and opening rearwardly, and means for reinforcing said upright bars including a crossbar terminally secured to the flanges at opposite sides of the openingand having staggeredly arranged fingers projecting forwardly into the channels of the upright bars. 7 g

A radiator shield comprising a shell having an opening therein and provided at opposed V edges of said opening with substantially aligned spaced slots, and a grille for said opening comprising spaced bars received within said slots, portions of said bars being bent over and secured to said shell beside said slots, said bars being channel-shaped and opening ,rearwardly, and means for reinforcing said bars including a cross bar terminally secured to the shell at opposed edges of said opening and having fingers projecting forwardly into the channels of said bars.

A radiator shield comprising a shell having an opening therein and provided at opposed edges of said opening with substantially aligned spaced slots, and a grille for said opening comprising a plurality of individual bars received in said slots and having portions bent laterally and secured 20 to said shell beside said slots.
