Application October 27, 1934, Serial No. 750,363
3 Claims.
The present invention relates to abrading and it has particular relation to devices associated with an abrading tool for collecting the dust resulting from polishing or grinding operations.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and veiiic'ient device of the character described which may be mounted directly upon a chuck in close proximity to the abrading tool and which is rotatable as an entirety therewith.
Another object ofthe inventionis to provide a device of the character described which is adapted to draw a current of air axially with respect to the abrading tool and which will filter out and collect dust particles carried thereby.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a dust collector which may be adjusted towards or away from the abrading tool without disturbing its connection with the chuck.
With such objects in view, as well as other advantages which may be incident to the use of the improvements, the invention consists of the 1 parts and combinations thereof hereinafter set forth and claimed with the understanding that the several necessary elements constituting the same may be varied in proportion and arrangement without departing from the nature and scope of the invention as dened in the appended claims.
In order to make the invention more clearly understood there are shown in the accompanying drawing, means for carrying the invention into practical effect, without limiting the improvements in their useful application to the particular constructions, which for the purpose of explanation has been made the subject of illustration.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section of an abrading tool and associated dust collector constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a, vertical transverse sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
' Figure 3 is a similar view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1, and A Figure 4 is a view partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawing, a device constructed in accordance with the present invention is shown as comprising a chuck I, provided with a socket portion 2 for removable engagement with a rotatable spindle 3, such as the shaft of an electric motor 4, and also provided with the usual clamping portion 5 adapted to grip an abrading tool, such as a grinding wheel 6.
' A cylindrical housing 1, constructed'preferably of sheet metal, is mounted in concentric spaced relation with respect to the chuck I and is secured thereto by means of a plurality of fan blades 8 so as to rotate with the chuck. The rear end of the housing 1, that is to say the end opposite to the tool or grinding wheel 6, is provided witha filter, herein shown as comprising a screen 9 of relatively fine wire mesh which is suitably secured to a ring I Il which removably engages through friction, the housing `member 1 and which is provided with a flanged opening I I through which the shaft or spindle 3 is adapted to project. The housing 1 may or may not be provided with a telescoping supplementary housing I2 adapted to be adjusted axially toward or away from the tool or grinding wheel 6.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that when the chuck and housing are rotated the fan blades 8 will cause a current of air to be drawn axially through the housing from the vicinity of the tool or grinding wheel 6 as indicated by arrows in Fig. 1 and that any dust particles which are carried by the air will be arrested by the screen` 9 and accumulated within the housing 1 around the interior thereof due to centrifugal action.
In Figure 4 there is illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the housing 1 is provided With two concentrically arranged spaced conical or flared members I3 and I4 respectively. These members together denne an annular conical air passage I5 which leads into the housing 1 from close proximity to theperiphery of a grinding wheel 6. This construction may be preferable in certain types of heavy work where the particles separated from the work and grinding wheel, during an abrading operation, are relatively coarse and heavy. In this instance the air current is concentrated in close proximity to the periphery of the grinding wheel 6' and is of sufficient strength to draw the particles into the housing 1 as fast as they are liberated.
From the foregoing itwill be apparent that a. very simple and eflicient dust collector is provided which will not only collect practically all of the dust resulting from an abrading operation, which is very desirable when precious metals are polished or ground, but which will prevent the annoyance and danger to health resulting from a dust laden atmosphere.
Other modifications and changes in proportion and arrangement of the several necessary elements constituting the invention may be made iol by those skilled in the art without departing from the nature and scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. Apparatus of the character described comprising a member adapted to be mounted upon a spindle for rotation therewith and to carry an abrading tool or the like; a housing carried by said member in spaced relation thereto; means associated with said housing for drawing a current of dust laden air from the vicinity of said tool into said housing; and iilter means cooperating with said housing for arresting the passage of dust in said current of air and to cause its `deposit in said housing.
2. Apparatus of the character described comprising a member adapted to be mounted upon a spindle for rotation therewith and to carry an abrading tool or the like; a housing carried by said member in spaced relation thereto; means associated with said housing for drawing a current of dust laden air from the vicinity of said tool into said housing; and a screen carried by said housing for arresting the passage of dust in said current of air and to cause its deposit in said housing.
3. Apparatus of the character described comprising a chuck adapted to be mounted upon a spindle for rotation therewith and to carry an abrading tool or the like; a housing carried by said member in spaced relation thereto; a fan carried by said chuck and constituting a support for said housing for drawing a current of dust laden air from the vicinity of said tool into said housing; and lter means cooperating with said housing for arresting the passage of dust in said current of air and to cause its deposit in said housing.
4. Apparatus of the character described comprising a member adapted to be mounted upon a spindle for rotation therewith and to carry an abrading tool or the like; a housing carried by said member in spaced relation thereto and adjustable toward and away from said tool; means associated with said housing for drawing a current of dust laden air from the vicinity of said tool into said housing; and lter means cooperating with said housing for arresting the passage of dust in said current of air and to cause its deposit in said housing.
5. Apparatus of the character described comprising a member adapted to be mounted upon a spindle for rotation therewith and to carry an abrading tool or the like; a housing carried by said member in spaced relation thereto, said housing having a ared extension terminating in proximity to the periphery of said abrading tool; means associated with said housing for drawing a current of dust laden air from vthe vicinity of said tool into said housing; and filter means cooperating with said housing for arresting the passage of dust in said current of air and to cause its deposit in said housing.
