Abstract
A bag holder has a hollow body 1 of truncated-conical form open at both top 3 and bottom 4. A truncated-conical ring 2 inserted through the top 3 of the body 1 engages in the mouth 21 of a bag 20 entered through the bottom 4, and is pushed down into the body 1 to wedge against the inside of the body-wall 5, and thereby retain the bag 20 in the holder with its mouth 21 open. The body 1 and ring 2, both molded of plastics in one-piece, are of conforming D-shape transverse cross-section, and a flat tongue 7 projects above the open top 3 as an extension of the flat part 6 of the wall 5. Hand-grips 9 for lifting, project above the top 3 from the outside of the wall 5, and lugs 10 either side of the grips 9 project outwardly from the body 1 to limit the depth of its stacked-insertion within a similar holder.
Description
- This invention relates to bag holders, and is concerned particularly with bag holders of the kind for retaining a bag with its mouth open to facilitate the loading of material, for example builder's rubble or garden refuse, into the bag.
- It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved bag holder of the above kind.
- According to the present invention a bag holder for retaining a bag with its mouth open, comprises a hollow body of generally-tubular form that is open at both top and bottom, and retention means for engagement within the mouth of the bag as entered through the open bottom of the body to retain the bag within the body with its mouth opened out wedged against the inside wall-surface of the body.
- The retention means may take the form of a ring that wedges within the hollow body, for example at a depth substantially half way between the top and bottom of the body. The ring may be of a truncated generally-conical configuration.
- The body may have a substantially-flat tongue projecting from its open top, and its wall may be of a truncated generally-conical configuration in transverse cross-section. More especially, the transverse cross-section of the body may be substantially of D-shape, and the retaining means may also have a D-shape configuration conforming substantially to this.
- A bag holder in accordance with the present invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 1 is a exploded perspective view of the bag holder according to the invention, showing its component parts, a retention ring and the bag-holder body, separated from one another; -
FIG. 2 is a sectional side view of the bag holder with its retention ring within the bag-holder body; and -
FIG. 3 is illustrative of the bag holder ofFIGS. 1 and 2 when fitted with a bag and held off the ground. - Referring to
FIGS. 1 and 2 , the bag holder consists of abody 1 and aring 2 both molded in one piece of high-density polythene. Thebody 1 is of a hollow, generally-tubular form having anopen top 3 and anopen bottom 4 of slightly-smaller cross-section that thetop 3. More particularly, thebody 1 has awall 5 of a truncated generally-conical configuration that is flat throughout apart 6 of its circumference, giving it a transverse cross-section of D-shape. Theflat part 6 of thewall 5 projects upwardly in a substantially-flat tongue 7 from thearcuate rim 8 of theopen top 3. - Three mutually-spaced hand-
grips 9 that project above therim 8 are molded integrally with thebody 1 to the outside of thewall 5, one diametrically opposite thetongue 7 and the other two diametrically opposite one another at right angles to this. Two outwardly-projectinglugs 10 are molded integrally with thebody 1 on the outside of thewall 5 either side of each hand-grip 9. - The
ring 2 is of a D-shape configuration conforming to that of the transverse cross-section of thebody 1, but is of smaller diameter than therim 8 so that it can be entered into theopen top 3 of thebody 1. However, the inside transverse cross-section of thebody 1 reduces gradually from thetop 3 down to thebottom 4, so that the depth to which thering 2 can be entered before wedging against the inside of the wall 5 (as illustrated inFIG. 2 ), is limited to about half the full depth. Thewall 11 of thering 2 is of a truncated generally-conical configuration but less pronounced than that of thewall 5, so that wedging of thering 2 is enhanced. It is the wedging of the outside of thewall 11 with the inside of thewall 5 that is used to retain a bag within thebody 1. - As illustrated in
FIG. 3 , abag 20 is retained in thebody 1 with itsmouth 21 held open and wedged by thering 2 against the inside of thewall 5, and with a substantial,lower part 22 of thebag 20 hanging down through theopen bottom 4. Engagement and retention of thebag 20 within thebody 1 is brought about by inserting themouth 21 of thebag 20 upwardly through theopen bottom 4 of thebody 1, placing thering 2 within themouth 21 to hold it open, and then pushing thering 2 with thebag 20, down within thebody 1 to wedge theopen mouth 21 against the inside of thewall 5 under the tight-fitting ring 2. In this condition, any loading of thebag 20 that tends to pull it away from thebody 1 when the holder is lifted by the hand-grips 9, merely tightens the wedging of thebag 20 to thebody 1 under thering 2. - The bag holder can be used in various way, but there are two principal modes. In one of these, the bag holder stands upright with its
bottom 4 on the ground and with thelower part 22 of the retainedbag 20 extending out across the ground from underneath it. Material can now be loaded into thebag 20 by dropping it through thetop 3 of thebody 1 to fall into theopen top 21 of thebag 20; the material may, for example, be builder's rubble shovelled into thetop 21. As the part of thebag 20 within thebody 1 fills, so the material can be transferred to thelower part 22 of thebag 20 simply by lifting thebody 1 using thegrips 9, and repeating this until thebag 20 as a whole becomes full. Thefull bag 20 can then be easily freed from the holder ready for replacement by another, empty bag, by removing thering 2 from within thebody 1 and lifting thebody 1 clear. - In the other principal mode of use, the
body 1 is laid on its side with theflat part 6 on the ground. This locates thetongue 7 on the ground projecting forwardly from thebody 1 so that material can be readily swept or otherwise pushed onto it and through theopen top 3 into thebag 20; the material may, for example, be garden rubbish swept by broom into thebag 20. The material can be transferred down thebag 20 out of thebody 1, simply by lifting thebody 1 using one or more of thegrips 9. Once thebag 20 becomes full it can be freed from the holder by lifting thebody 1 up so as to stand thebag 20 upright using thegrips 9, removing thering 2, and lifting thebody 1 from it. - When the bag holder is not in use, it can be stacked with the ring inside, together with one or more other, similar holders, the holders being stacked upright, partially inside one another. The depth to which the bag holder can be inserted into another for stacking is limited by its outwardly-projecting
lugs 10. Thelugs 10 abut therim 8 of the other holder to prevent the two holders becoming wedged together, allowing them to be separated easily when required for use. - In one example of a bag holder constructed as described above, the thickness of each
wall 5 and 12 is some 3 millimetre, thebody 1 has a height of 200 millimetre with thetongue 7 projecting above this by some 56 millimetre, and the diameters of thetop 3 andbottom 4 are 375 millimetre and 300 millimetre respectively, whereas the height of thering 2 is 75 millimetre and its top and bottom diameters are 350 millimetre and 325 millimetre respectively. With this construction, wedging of thering 2 within thebody 1 normally occurs at a height of about 50 millimetre above thebottom 4 of thebody 1. It will be apparent that this height is dependent partly on the thickness of bag-wall but more especially on the general diameter of thering 2.
Claims (19)
1. A bag holder for retaining a bag within the holder with the mouth of the bag open, comprising a hollow body having a tubular wall with an open top and an open bottom, the open bottom of the body being open for entry of the bag into the body through the open bottom, and a retention member for engagement within the mouth of the bag when the bag is entered into the body as aforesaid for retaining the mouth of the bag open, the retention member engaging within the mouth of the bag to retain the bag wedged within the holder against the tubular wall of the body.
2. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the retention means comprises a ring for wedging within the hollow body.
3. The bag holder according to claim 2 , wherein the ring wedges within the body at a depth substantially half way between the open top and open bottom.
4. The bag holder according to claim 2 , wherein the ring is of a truncated conical configuration.
5. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the hollow body is of a truncated conical configuration.
6. The bag holder according to claims 1, including a substantially-flat tongue that projects from the open top of the hollow body.
7. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the hollow body has a transverse cross-section of substantially D-shape.
8. The bag holder according to claim 7 , wherein the retaining member is a ring having a D-shape configuration conformal to the transverse cross-section of the body.
9. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the hollow body has external hand grips for lifting the holder.
10. The bag holder according to claim 9 , wherein the hand grips project above the open top of the hollow body.
11. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the hollow body is a one-piece molding of plastics.
12. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the retaining member is a one-piece molding of plastics.
13. The bag holder according to claim 1 , wherein the hollow body has outwardly-projecting lugs for stacking-depth limitation.
14. A bag holder for retaining a bag within the holder with the mouth of the bag open, comprising a tubular body having an inside wall-surface, an open top and an open bottom, the open bottom of the body being for entry of the bag into the body through the open bottom, and a retention ring for engagement within the mouth of the bag when the bag is entered into the body as aforesaid for retaining the mouth of the bag open, the retention ring engaging within the mouth of the bag to wedge the bag with its mouth open, against the inside wall-surface of the tubular body.
15. The bag holder according to claim 14 , wherein the inside wall-surface of the tubular body is of truncated conical configuration.
16. The bag holder according to claim 15 , wherein the retaining ring has an external surface of truncated conical configuration for wedging the ring within the inside-wall surface of the tubular body.
17. The bag holder according to claim 16 , wherein the truncated conical configuration of the ring is less pronounced conically than the truncated conical configuration of the tubular body.
18. The bag holder according to claim 14 , wherein the open top and open bottom of the hollow body have diameters that are different from one another, the diameter of the open top being larger than the diameter of the open bottom, and wherein the ring has a diameter that is larger than the diameter of the open bottom and smaller than the diameter of the open top.
19. The bag holder according to claim 18 , wherein the tubular body is of D-shape in transverse cross-section, and the retention ring is of a conformal D-shape configuration.
