FIGS. 7A and 7B are perspective and side views, respectively, of a blade carrier of the safety cutter ofFIG. 1 . - Referring to
FIGS. 1, 4 , 5, 6A and 6B, anexample cutter apparatus 100 includes ahousing 102, ablade carrier 104, and a mechanism for biasing theblade carrier 104 toward a retracted position away from adistal end 105 of the housing. In this example embodiment, and referring also toFIGS. 7A and 7B , theblade carrier 104 is a “triple locking slider” which includes a topengaging portion 106, a leftengaging portion 108, and a rightengaging portion 110 formed as shown. Thehousing 102 includes achannel 112 and 114, 116 and 118 which are adjacent to theopenings channel 112. In an example embodiment, the 114, 116 and 118 are approximately equidistant from theopenings distal end 105 of the housing. Theblade carrier 104 is sized to fit within and slide along thechannel 112 with its top, left and right 106, 108 and 110 extending from theengaging portions 114, 116 and 118, respectively. In this example embodiment, theopenings housing 102 and theblade carrier 104 are shaped such that a cutting force (represented by arrow 119) applied to the housing when the blade carrier is in an extended position causes atop edge 120 of the blade carrier to come into contact with the housing frictionally locking the blade carrier in the extended position until the cutting force is removed. More specifically, when a counterforce (represented by arrow 121) is applied to a blade which is secured to theblade carrier 104, thetop edge 120 of the blade carrier is forced against the housing. Adjacent to thedistal end 105 of thehousing 102, aportion 122 of thechannel 112 is complementary in shape to thetop edge 120 of theblade carrier 104, which facilitates the friction locking described above. - In an example embodiment, a cutter apparatus includes a housing (e.g., sized to be hand-held) and a blade carrier. The housing includes a channel and openings adjacent to the channel at three different sides of the housing. The blade carrier is sized to fit within and slide along the channel, and includes three engaging portions that extend from the openings such that a force bearing upon any of the portions can cause the blade carrier to slide along the channel.
- In the example embodiment described herein, the
blade carrier 104 is configured to secure ablade 124 to thecutter apparatus 100 such that acutting edge 126 of the blade faces abottom side 128 of the housing, and the three 106, 108 and 110 extend from aengaging portions top side 130, aleft side 132, and aright side 134 of the housing, respectively. One or more of the 106, 108 and 110 can include a gripping surface (e.g., ridges) 136.engaging portions - The
blade carrier 104 can include one or more surfaces that are complementary to theblade 124. In the example embodiment described herein, theblade carrier 104 includes 138, 140, 142, 144 and 146 which are formed as shown for preventing thecomplementary surfaces blade 124 from sliding over the blade carrier. In this example embodiment, theblade carrier 104 also includes atab member 148 under which theblade 124 is fitted. Thetab member 148, in conjunction with 150 and 152 of therails housing 102, prevents theblade 124 from falling away from theblade carrier 104 when the housing is assembled. In this example embodiment, theblade carrier 104 also includes a detent 154, and the mechanism for biasing theblade carrier 104 is aspring 156 which mechanically couples the blade carrier (at the detent 154) to a back portion 158 (e.g., a post) of the housing. - In an example embodiment, the
housing 102 includes two 160 and 162 that are pivotally coupled together. By way of example, thehousing portions 160 and 162 are formed with complementary end portions through which ahousing portions pin 164 is inserted to effect a pivotal interconnection. In this example embodiment, thehousing portion 162 includes anindented portion 166 sized to receivespare blades 168, and thehousing portion 160 is provided with aspring 170 which is compressed between thehousing portion 160 and anedge 172 of theindented portion 166. - The
cutter apparatus 100 further includes a mechanism for securing the 160 and 162 together. In this example embodiment, thehousing portions housing portion 162 includes a threadedchannel 174, and the mechanism for securing includes ascrew 176 with a threadedsurface 178 complementary to the threadedchannel 174. By way of example, thescrew 176 includes ahead 180 with aperimeter portion 182 that can be rotated by a user of the cutting apparatus, but which is also inset within arecess 183 formed in thehousing portion 160. Thus, in this example, thescrew 176 is fitted through anopening 184 in thehousing portion 160 and rotated into the threadedchannel 174 to secure the 160 and 162 together. When thehousing portions screw 176 is loosened and removed, a force exerted by thespring 170 pushes the 160 and 162 apart slightly to make it easier for a user to pry open the cutter apparatus 100 (e.g., to replace a blade on the blade carrier 104). In this example embodiment, the threadedhousing portions surface 178 is formed within apost member 186, which also serves as a stop for theblade carrier 104 when the blade carrier is pulled by thespring 156 to its retracted position. In this example embodiment, the 160 and 162 also include ridgeshousing portions outer surface portions 188. - In this example embodiment, the
perimeter portion 182 of thescrew 176 is shaped (with ridges) for gripping the screw. Thehead 180 of thescrew 176 can be shaped to include an ornamental design. In this example embodiment, the design is that of a tire on a rim. It should be appreciated, however, that other designs and appearances for the securing mechanism can be used. - In an example embodiment, a cutter apparatus includes a housing with two hand-grip portions that are shaped to be interfitted together, and a blade carrier. The housing includes a channel and openings facing the channel at three different locations around the housing. The blade carrier is sized to fit within and slide along the channel, and includes three engaging portions that extend from the openings such that a sufficient force bearing upon any of the three engaging portions causes the blade carrier to slide along the channel.
- In another example embodiment, a cutter apparatus includes a housing with two separable handle portions that define a channel within the housing, and a blade carrier. The housing includes openings facing the channel at top, left and right sides of the housing. The blade carrier is sized to fit within and slide along the channel, and includes three engaging portions that extend from the openings such that a sufficient force bearing upon any of the three engaging portions causes the blade carrier to slide along the channel.
- Referring to
FIGS. 2, 3A and 3B, in various embodiments, thecutter apparatus 100 further includes aclip holster 200 sized to receive thehousing 102 therein. In this example embodiment, a flexible clamp 202 (e.g., made of metal) is sized and configured to “snap fit” about thehousing 102. In this example embodiment, theclip holster 200 also includes aclip member 204 which is secured (e.g., riveted) to theflexible clamp 202. In this example embodiment, theclip member 204 is sized for securing to a belt or similar object. - Although the present invention has been described in terms of the example embodiments above, numerous modifications and/or additions to the above-described embodiments would be readily apparent to one skilled in the art.
