With the lid held in closed position the member I! is turned so as to move inwardly and tilt the member l6, bringing the portion 25 into engagement with the journal box and locking the lid in closed position. The member ll when turned in opposite direction moves out of contact with the member l6 and the portion 2! of that member being heavier than the box engaging portion moves downward by gravity and. freeing the member Hi from the box and the lid can then be opened.
Having thus described the invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a journal box having an opening in its front wall, of a lid pivoted to the box and adapted to close the opening, a latch pivotally mounted on the lid and normally inoperative when the lid is moved to closed position and a member mounted on the lid independent of the latch and adapted for advancement into the box to move the latch into operative position.
2. The combination in a journal box having an opening in its front wall, of a lid for closing the opening, a member movably mounted on the inner face of the lid for engagement with a wall of the box, a rotatable member mounted on the lid in spaced relation to the mounting of the first named member, and adapted when rotated to move and hold the first member in engagement with the box.
3. In a journal box, in combination, a hollow body portion, a lid, a housing on the lid having an open side adjacent the outer opening of the box and a depending end wall closing the housing, a screw threaded member projecting through said wall and within the housing, a projection on the housing forming a restricted opening and afiording access to the screw threaded member, and a latch mounted within the housing, operatively associated with the screw threaded member and releasably engaging the said body portion upon manipulation of the screw threaded member.
4. In a railway car journalbox, in combination, a hinged lid forming a cover for the box, a housing on the lid having an open inner side communicating with the interior of the box, a depending wall preventing access to the box through the housing, an opening in the wall and a screw threaded member disposed in said opening, means on said screw threaded member cooperating with said wall to restrict movement of the screw threaded member in a direction longitudinally of its axis, a latch mounted within said housing and projecting into the box when the lid is in closed position, said latch and screw threaded member being operably associated so as to move the latch into and out of engagement with the interior of the box upon rotation of the screw threaded member, a projection on said housing extending below said depending wall forming a restricted opening, the screw threaded member having its outer portion extending beyond the depending wall of the housing and within the restricted opening.
5. In a lock lid for a journal box, a housing including an end wall formed on the lid, a screw threaded member secured within the housing, in a position to be rotatable upon a longitudinal axis and restricted in movement longitudinally of said axis, a latch member within the housing and upon the said member, internal threads on the latch engaging the screw threaded member so as to move longitudinally thereof as the said member is rotated, a projection on said lid extending below the said end wall to form a restricted opening, one end of said screw threaded member projecting through said end wall and within the opening.
