Description

June 18, 1935. c. l.. MARTIN CIGARETTE HOLDER Filed April 3,l 1,934
W if #gf ff! y 2L i /9 ATTORNEY.
' I pletely enclosed Patentes .ine iaisas PATENT OFFICE CIGARETTE HOLDER Clarence L. Martin,
Hazarllville,
l application Api-ii s, 1934, sei-iai No. 118,811
s claims. l(ci. lai-51)' lMy invention relates to improvements in oiga# rette holders.
An object of my invention is to provide a cigaretteholder in which the cigarette may be comwithout interfering, in any way, ywiiil'its free burning qualities,-but which will retain all ashes and residue of combustion, and prevent contact of the hot ashes, or burning end, of the cigarette with any object which may come in contact with any part of the holder.
A further object oi' my invention is to provide, in such av holder, means for extinguishing a lighted cigarette therein, so that the cigarette may be partly smoked, the holder closed and immediately placed in a pocket or other convenient -place with the cigarettel contained therein, without danger of burning or scorching its surroundings.
A still further object of my invention is to provide, in such a holder, means' for ejecting the stub of a smoked cigarette, and means for retaining in the holder in the directpath'of inhaled smoke a mentholated or otherwise iiavored or perfumed capsule, with means for easily and quickly removing r interchanging the capsules.
ese Aand' other objects and advantages of myinvention will be more completely disclosed and described in the specification, the accompanying drawing, andthe appended claims.
Broadly, my 4invention comprises a mouthpiece or bit member formed with a cavity or recess in which a scented or flavored capsule may be placed and a tapered opening for receiving an end of a cigaretteya sleeve member slidably supported on the bit member over the cavity to normally iose the same, in order to retain the capsule in place, vbut formed with an opening which may be registered with the cavity fr removal or replacement of the capsule, means on the sleeveI for electing a cigarette butt when the sleeve is movedv or fslid 'forwardly on the bit member, a second sleeve member secured on said bit member and formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots and provided with an integral reticulated lining, and a cap member formed with ,longitudinal slots and. provided with'an integralreticulatedl lining for a portion fof its length and across the end, said cap member being removablyY androtatably sup-14 ported onv the second sleeve `member' normally with its slots registering with theslots in the sec,-
ond sleeve member, but rotatable to close ythe slots in the second sleeve member.
A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, `in whichz- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal, sectional view through the axis of the assembled holder with a cgarette in place therein. Fig. 2 is 'a cross, sectional view on .the line22 of F13. l. A
'- stem portion 6.
' Fig. a is a cross, sectional view on menne of Fig. `l.
' Fig. 4 is a. cross, sectional view on the line 4-4 vof Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a view similarvto Fig. 4, but with they sleeves in the opposite relative position for cuttingg oif the external air..
Fig. 6 is a cross, sectional of Fig. '1, and y Fig. '7 is a plan view of the holder with its various parts in disassembled relation.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, in which like numerals refer to like parts throughoutz I A cigarette, I, has an end 2 thereof located and held in a tapered or bell-shaped socket 3 formed in a mouthpiece or bit member 4. -The bit member 4 is formed with a shoulder 5 and a The stem portion 6 is formed with-acavity or recess 'I for receiving a capsule .view on the line 6-6 V8, vand a relatively small bore. 9 connecting or having communication with they bell-shaped socket 3. The capsulel comprisesa tubular member I0 containing a loose, fibrous material II, as asbestos or cotton, which may be scented or avored to taste. A sleeve member I2 is slidably and rotatably supported on the stem 6, and is formed with? an opening I3 and a bayonet slot I4 co-operating lwith a pin I5 in the stem 6 to hold the sleeve I2 in position for closing the recess 1 and retaining the capsule 8 within the stem 6.- The sleeve I2 is alsoprovided with a forwardly extending finger element I6 terminating in an inwardly extending portion I1, against which thebutt 2 of the cigarette I engages. A tubular member I8 is pressed on the end of the stein 6 and` serves to retain the sleeve movement of the sleeve I2 on the stem 6. `The stem 6 is formed with alongitudinaslot I9 and the slot I 9 ,and thevbutt 21 ofthe cigarette willl be ejected from .the socket 3. When the sleeve member I2 on the stem 6 and to llimit the slidable I2 is moved forwardly against a shoulder .22 l
formed by a notch 23 in the tubular member I8,
the slot.20. The slot 2l providesa recess for the ejector I1 to compensate for the slight movement '1 required to lock the sleeve I2 on the pin I5.
A sleeve member 24 is pressed on over the tubu-,v
larmember I8, and overlapsthe slots I9 and2I,
thereby closing these-openings-l The sleeve 2 4 is preferably composed of` bakelite, rubber, or
formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots-25" and provided with an integralreticulated lining 26, preferably of wireclothn cast, or molded into the inner wall of the sleeve 24. The sleeve 24 is l also formed with a shoulder 21 which butts against the tubular member Il, and the end 28 of the sleeve 24 provides a stop for the sleeve I2. A cap member 29, of bakelite or other suitable heat resisting material, is, slidably and rotatably supported on the sleeve 24, and held in either open or closed position by co-operation of a double bayonet slot 30 formed in the cap 29 with a pin 3I secured in the sleeve 24. 'I'he cap member 29 is formed with a plurality of longitudinal slots 32 and an opening 33 in an end 34 thereof, and is provided with an integral reticulated lining 35, preferably of wire cloth or the like, cast into the inner wall.
In operation, the cap 29 may be removed and a cigarette inserted in the bell-shaped socket 3. The sleeve 24 is approximately two-thirds the length of a cigarette, which permits the end I of the cigarette to be held firmly while inserting the cigarette in the socket 3. The cigarette may be first lighted and the cap replaced, or the cap may be first replaced and the cigarette lighted through the end opening 33. After the cigarette has been approximately one-third consumed, if it is desired to extinguish it, the cap 29 may be rotated on the sleeve 24 to close the slots 25, as indicated in Fig. 5. The wire linings 26 and 35 of the sleeve 24 and cap 29, respectively, serve to retain all ashes and otherproducts of combustion within the holder until the cap 29 is removed, when they may be readily removed. The butt 2 of acigarette is removed by disengaging the sleeve I2 from the pin I5 and sliding it forward on the stem 6, thus moving the ejector I'I forward suiciently to disengage the butt of the cigarette from the tapered socket 3. In this forward position of the sleeve I2, it may be revolved to bring the opening I3 into register with the cavity, or recess I, in which position the capsule 8 may be removed and another inserted. The cavity 1 is then closed by a reverse movement of the sleeve I2. The holder, with a lighted cigarette therein, may be laid on or placed against any surface, inflammable or otherwise, without danger of burning or scorching, or it may be placed in a pocket or pocketbook with perfect safety.
