Description
- The present invention relates generally to roll product dispensers. More particularly, the present invention relates to a portable roll product dispenser suitable to be mounted to a surface in different orientations.
- Roll product dispensers are generally well known and are utilized in a wide variety of applications. For example, there are roll product dispensers for dispensing various types of adhesive tapes, stickers, printed novelties, static clings, labels, stamps or the like. One particular application in which a roll product dispenser may be effectively utilized is found in the area of radiology. When imaging various parts of the human body, it is often the practice of physicians or technicians to mark or identify, via a marker, portions of the body in order to direct the physician to the portion of the radiographic image reflecting/representing the body part of interest and in order to prevent such physician from being misled by certain body tissues of varying radiographic density. The markers also may be utilized to facilitate in targeting radiation, such as, for example, in radiation therapy. Typically, the markers, one or more of which may be provided on a strip or in roll product form, are applied by the physician or the technician in an office or laboratory environment, thus dictating the need for an easily manipulated, light weight and portable roll product dispenser. As marker types vary, it is desirable for a roll product dispenser to be suitable for operatively accommodating different products.
- Additional characteristics or features desirable in a roll product dispenser include the ability of the dispenser to present an end of the roll product to the user for easy withdrawal, the ability of the dispenser to facilitate easy and accurate separation of one or more components of the roll product, and the ability to selectively mount the dispenser to different surfaces in different orientations.
- Current roll product dispensers fail to address one or more of the above-identified desirable characteristics. Accordingly, it is an object of the present invention is to provide an improved roll product dispenser that overcomes one or more of the above-described drawbacks and disadvantages associated with the prior art.
- The present invention is directed to a roll product dispenser having a housing with a chamber for rotatably accommodating a roll product. The housing also has a dispensing outlet, a dispensing guide, a first connector, and a second connector. The first and second connectors cooperate with respective surface mounts to enable the dispenser to be fixedly positioned on a surface in different orientations with respect to the surface.
- In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the first connector has at least two connecting elements with a proximal end, a distal end, and at least one groove therein. The two connecting elements of the first connector may be angled relative to each other so that the distance between respective proximal ends is at least somewhat less than the distance between respective distal ends. The angled connecting elements effectively cooperate with a first surface mount having corresponding and/or complementary mounting elements to effectively secure the dispenser to a surface in a particular orientation. The first surface mount may be affixed to a surface in any of a variety of ways.
- In accordance with another aspect of the present invention, the second connector has at least two engaging portions for operatively engaging corresponding and/or complementary channels associated with a second surface mount. The second surface mount may be affixed to a surface in any of a variety of ways.
- One advantage of the present invention is that it enables a roll product to be selectively mounted or affixed to a surface in different orientations relative to the surface. Another advantage of the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention is that they can easily be manipulated, light weight and portable. Still other advantages of the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention are found in the ability of the dispensers to present an end of the roll product for easy and effective withdrawal, and the ability of the dispensers to facilitate easy and accurate separation of components of the roll product as desired. Still a further advantage of the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention is the ability of the dispensers to effectively accommodate and dispense a variety of different types of roll products.
- These and other aspects and advantages of the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention will become more readily apparent in view of the following detailed description of the currently preferred embodiments of the present invention and the accompanying drawings.

The mountingchannel 86, 88 are preferably uniformly spaced or equidistant along the extent ofchannels second surface mount 78. - The
second surface mount 78 may be securely connected to a surface (e.g., a wall or the like) in any of a variety of ways for accomplishing such a task. For example, as shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, thesecond surface mount 78 may have one ormore apertures 72 allowing one or more fasteners 74 (e.g., bolts, screws, nails, tacks, etc.) to traverse thesecond surface mount 78 so as to fasten or secure thesecond surface mount 78 to a surface. In other aspects of the present invention, thesecond surface mount 78 may be provided with alternative fastening or securing means. For example, as shown inFIG. 8 , theelongate plate 80 may have an adhering surface 76 (e.g., a glue, a pressure-sensitive adhesive or other adhesive, or a fabric hook/loop arrangement) suitable to securely fasten thesecond surface mount 78 to a surface. - In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, one of the mounting
86, 88 is achannels primary channel 86 and another is asecondary channel 88. As can be seen, thefirst edge 82 extends laterally inwardly a greater extent than thesecond edge 84, such that thefirst channel 86 is deeper than thesecond channel 88. In this aspect, theprimary channel 86 is well suited for a vertical mounting of thesecond surface mount 78. That is, theprimary channel 86, when thesecond surface mount 78 is secured to a vertical surface, may preferably be oriented or located above thesecondary channel 88 so as to better ensure that one ormore dispensers 1 engaged with thesecond surface mount 78 will not be undesirably pulled free therefrom upon application of a downward dispensing force. - In addition, as illustrated in FIGS. 9 to 11, the configuration of
86 and 88 enable one orchannels more dispensers 1 to effectively engage thesecond surface mount 78 in at least two ways. First, one ormore dispensers 1 may engage thesecond surface mount 78 via either thefirst end 90 or thesecond end 92, which engagement is accomplished by a sliding action. Alternatively, one ormore dispensers 1 may engage thesecond surface mount 78 at any point along the extent thereof by (1) inserting a first engagingportion 50 a of thesecond connector 10 into theprimary channel 86 as shown inFIG. 9 , (2) bringing theplanar base 48 of thesecond connector 10 into a substantially parallel relationship with theelongate plate portion 80 of thesecond surface mount 78 as shown inFIG. 10 , and (3) allowing a second engagingportion 50 b of thesecond connector 10 to engage thesecondary channel 88 as shown inFIG. 11 . - Referring to FIGS. 12 to 14, in another aspect of the present invention, the
housing 2 can cooperate with aremovable cover 3 so as to allow effective and efficient access to thechamber 12 and/or theroll product 14 contained therein. Theremovable cover 3 can have any of a variety of configurations. For instance, thecover 3 can have one ormore fastening elements 5 suitable to operatively engage or connect with thehousing 2 so that thecover 3 and thehousing 2 are securely coupled as desired. In addition, thecover 3 may be provided with at least one guide structure, such as aguide pin 7 shown inFIG. 14 . Preferably the guide structure is suitable to aid in properly coupling thecover 3 to thehousing 2. Still further, thecover 3 can have athird connector 9. Thethird connector 9 can provide further mounting options. However, in a preferred aspect of the present invention, thethird connector 9 is well suited for retaining or accommodating a tool. For example, thethird connector 9 may accommodate, hold or retain a cutting tool 11 like that shown inFIGS. 15 a-15 c. The cutting tool 11, in one aspect of the present invention, can be entirely separable from thecover 3 and/or thehousing 2, or, in other aspects, may be connected to thecover 3 and/orhousing 2, via a tether, for example, so as to allow for effective use while preventing inadvertent separation and/or loss. - Referring to
FIGS. 16 and 17 , having identified and described some of the features/aspects of the present invention, it is apparent that the present invention provides for an improved roll product dispenser system that advantageously allows for one or more portable dispensers to be mounted or affixed to a surface in different orientations. For example, as shown inFIG. 16 , a dispenser may be affixed or mounted to a surface so that the dispensing outlet thereof may be proximate to the surface and the roll product dispensed laterally with respect to the surface. Also, as illustratively shown inFIG. 17 , one or more dispensers may be simultaneously mounted or affixed to a surface. Multiple dispensers may utilize a common surface mount (i.e., as shown, second surface mount 78 may be of a suitable extent to accommodate multiple individual dispensers 1). Further, each dispenser may be oriented so that the dispensing outlet thereof is separated from the surface by the housing of the dispenser and the roll product dispensed vertically with respect to the surface in either an upward direction or a downward direction. - Thus, the
first surface mount 52 preferably defines a first mounting recess and thefirst connector 8 defines a first mounting face that is receivable within the first mounting recess for connecting thefirst connector 8 to thefirst surface mount 52. The first mounting recess and the first mounting face are each axially elongated and the first mounting face is slidably receivable within the first mounting recess to releasably connect thefirst connector 8 to thefirst surface mount 52. The first mounting recess may have two or more first recess elements angled relative to each other and the mounting face may have two or more first face elements angled relative to each other and complementary with the two or more first angled recess elements. - Likewise, the
second surface mount 78 preferably defines a second mounting recess and the second connector defines a second mounting face that is receivable within the second mounting recess for connecting thesecond connector 10 to thesecond surface mount 78. The second mounting recess and the second mounting face are each axially elongated and the first mounting face is slidably receivable within the second mounting recess to releasably connect thesecond connector 10 to thesecond surface mount 78. The second mounting recess may have two or more second recess elements angled relative to each other and the mounting face may have two or more second face elements angled relative to each other and complementary with the two or more second angled recess elements. - As previously noted, other advantages of the illustrated embodiments of the present invention include the easily manipulated, light weight and portable dispenser, and the effectiveness of the dispenser system in presenting an end of the roll product for easy and effective withdrawal, in facilitating easy and accurate separation of segments of the roll product as desired, as well as the dispensers' ability to effectively accommodate and dispense a variety of different roll products.
- The present invention having been thus described with particular reference to the preferred forms thereof, it will be obvious that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the present invention as defined herein. For example, the dispenser of the present invention may operatively cooperate with a surface mount suitable to engage or mountably receive the dispenser via the first connector or the second connector alternatively.
