Description
- The present invention relates to a roller assembly for a track having opposing generally parallel and transversely spaced first and second portions used for sectional overhead doors.
- Sectional overhead doors are typically installed in garages. As shown schematically in
FIG. 1 ,sectional overhead door 100 includescontiguous panels 101, connected by 102, 103. Attached to thehinges panel end hinges 103 arerespective axles 104 ofwheels 105. Thewheels 105 run ontracks 110 havingvertical sections 110 a which extend vertically along each side of a garage opening. Thetracks 110 extend into acurved section 110 b and into a horizontal section 110 c disposed adjacent the ceiling of the garage. Thetrack 110 andwheels 105 allows thedoor panels 101 to be moved from thevertical section 110 a where thedoor panels 101 block the garage opening to the horizontal section 110 c of thetrack 110 to allow passage through the opening. -
FIG. 2 schematically shows a cross-section of thetrack 110 and awheel 105 received therein.Track 110 is attached to a wall orceiling 120 viabracket 121.Track 110 includes substantially opposed 111, 112. Theportions bottom portion 112 is generally V-shaped to ensure that thewheel 105 is retained in thetrack 110, especially for the curved and horizontal sections 10 b and 110 c. - The
track top portion 111 is spaced from thewheel 105 in order to allow rotation of thewheel 105. This gap is also used for insertion of thewheel 105 into thetrack 110 by angularly positioning thewheel 105 relative to thetrack 110 as shown inFIG. 3 . - The above present arrangement causes a number of disadvantages. Firstly, the
wheels 105 are not securely retained in thetrack 110 because of the substantial gap between thewheels 105 and thetrack top portion 111. This can allow thewheels 105 to be dislodged from thetrack 110 and cause damage to thedoor 100. Also, the play between thewheels 105 and tracktop portion 111 allows thewheels 105 and theiraxles 104 to move relative to thedoor hinges 103 causing a rattling noise, which is especially prevalent in windy conditions. - It is the object of the present invention to substantially overcome or at least ameliorate the prior art disadvantages.
- The present invention provides a roller assembly to engage a track having opposing generally parallel and transversely spaced first and second track portions, the roller assembly including:

The wheels 12 includeaxles 13 each having a reduceddiameter end portion 13 a, which forms a shoulder 13 b in theaxle 13. Each axle end isportion 13 a includes acircular groove 14 adjacent its distal end. Theaxle end portions 13 a ofbottom wheels 12 b are inserted into the frame holes 15. Theaxle end portion 13 a of thetop wheel 12 a is inserted into thevertical slot 17. The axle shoulders 13 b engage one side of theframe 11 and retaining clips 16 (circlips) are inserted into theaxle grooves 14 on the other side of theframe 11 to retain the wheels 12 to theframe 11. - The
top wheel 12 a is moveable along theslot 17. Acompression spring 18 is inserted into theslot 17, with a bottom end of thespring 18 abutting against the bottom end of theslot 17 and a top end of thespring 18 abutting against theaxle 13 of thetop wheel 12 a. A verticalmiddle formation 19 of theframe 11 in theslot 17 retains thecompression spring 18 therein. Thetop wheel 12 a is thus movable along theslot 17 but is biased by thespring 18 toward the top of theframe 11. Anaxle support portion 20 is attached to the side of theframe 11 opposite to the wheels 12, to which ahinge axle 21 is attached. - As shown in

Thetop wheel 12 a is biased towards the trackfirst portion 111 by thespring 18. In effect, thetop wheel 12 a is movable relative to thebottom wheels 12 b, and thespring 18 biases thetop wheel 12 a away from thebottom wheels 12 b, such that the wheels 12 contact and roll along their 111 or 112. Therespective track portions hinge axle 21 can then be attached to the hinge of a sectional door roller in a conventional manner. - By using multiple wheels 12 and having the wheels 12 movably biased away from each other into contact with their respective track portions, a smoother operation of the
roller 10 is achieved. Noise and rattling of theroller 10 in thetrack 110 is reduced compared to the prior art. Theroller 10 is held tightly in thetrack 110 and there is substantially no play therebetween. Thus, the disadvantages of the prior art described above are substantially avoided, resulting in a substantially rattle-free operation and less likelihood of theroller 10 being dislodged from thetrack 110. Movably biasing one wheel relative to the others also allows theroller 10 to adapt to changes in track dimensions, as well as to roll along the curved sections of the track. The three wheel roller can be used for domestic overhead doors having 2 inch (5.08 cm) tracks (distance between the first andsecond track portions 111, 112). -
FIG. 5 shows a modification of theroller 10. In this embodiment, atorsion spring 25 is used instead of acompression spring 18. As can be seen, oneend 25 a of thetorsion spring 25 is held by theframe 11 whilst asecond end 25 b thereof biases thetop wheel 12 a away from thebottom wheels 12 b. -
FIG. 6 shows another modification of theroller 10 utilising aleaf spring 26. Two ends 26 a of theleaf spring 26 spring are attached to the axles ofbottom wheels 12 b with a middle portion 26 b of theleaf spring 26 biasing thetop wheel 12 a. -
