DOLL
Filed Jan. 9, 1953 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 MVENTOR ATE'ORNEYS Patented June 18, 1 935 UNITED STATES DOLL Abraham M. Katz, Brooklyn, N. Y.,.assignor to Ideal Novelty & Toy 00., Brooklyn, N. Y., a corporation of New York Application January 9, 1933, Serial No. 650,751 I 8 Claims. (01. 46-40)- My invention relates to a new and improved doll. One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved doll having a head which is made of bendable rubber, said head being suitably reinforced so as to permit the insertion and use of movable eye-ball members.
Another object of my invention is to provide a doll having a head which is suitably reinforced at the front or face part, it being understood that said head is preferably made of I resilient and bendable rubber. v
Another object of the invention is to provide a doll having a head which is preferably made of resilient and bendable rubber, said head having an inner reinforcement which is made of hard rubber and metal or other suitable rigid material.
Other objects of my invention will be set forth in the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embodiment thereof, it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended merely to generally explain the same and not to limit it in any manner. I I
Fig. 1 is a front elevation, part of the head being represented as being broken away.
Fig. 2 is an inner elevation of the head, this view being partially in section.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fi 2.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the reinforcing insert. I A
Fig. 5 is a modification of Fig. 3. v
Fig. 6 is a perspective view'of the reinforcing insert. I
, The doll is provided with a body I, arms 2 and legs 3, of any suitable type. The head II] of the doll is mounted in any suitable manner upon the neck portion of the doll. The head ID of the doll is generally made of resilient and bendable-rubber composition, the front wall of said head being reinforced by a rigid insert I4, which is made of any suitable metal. This rigid insert I4 is pro vided with end walls I5, which have the curved shape shown in Fig. 6, and said end walls I5 are provided with metal reinforcing webs I'I.
As shown in Fig. 4, when the reinforcing member I0 is applied to the head, the top wall of the reinforcing member I4 is above the eyes of the doll and said top wall is approximately near the top of the forehead of the doll.
The bottom wall of the member I4 is approximately at the level of the upper lip of the doll,
so that the eye-sockets I I of the head are located intermediate the topand bottomwalls of the member I4. I i
The end walls I5 are sharply inclined with reference to the top and bottom members of the in-' sert, and said end Walls I5 are imbedded in'the 5 cheeks of the head, so that the sidewalls of the head are suitably reinforced.
As shown in Fig. 3, the member I4 is preferably imbedded in a member I8 which is made of hard rigid rubber, and said member IB-is vul-. l0 canized to the inner surface of the front'wall" of the doll.
The hard rubber is preferably confined to the top and bottom webs of the member I4, so that the end walls I5 are preferably not imbedded in hard rubber. Said end Walls I5 areimbedded, either wholly or partially, in the side wallsor cheek portions of the head. As previously stated, the head of the doll is preferably made of resilient and bendable rubber. Likewise, thehard-rubber member I8 may be integral with'an intermediate projection IS, in the embodiment shown in Fig. 3.
In order to manufacture the device, the reinforcing insert !4 may be assembled together with the hard-rubber member I8, the head I 0 and the members I8 and I9 are then assembled in proper relationship, and the rubber head I0 and the hard-rubber member I8 are then simultaneously vulcanized. However, the article is not to be limited to any particular method of manufacture. Likewise, the member I8 could be vulcanized around the member I4, and the assembly of theseparts with the head I9 could then be completed by vulcanizing the rubber material of the head I0 with the use of suitable pressure. Since'the side-walls or cheek portions of the head ID are vulcanized under pressure around the side walls of .the insert, a very firm connection is secured; andno otherconnection is necessary.
The doll is provided with an eye-ball construction of any suitable type, astandard type being conventionally illustrated herein. The eye-ball members I2 are provided with rearwardly projecting and perforated lugs. The eye-ball mem-. bers are turnably held in position by means or, clips i6 which are made of resilient or. spring wire. Said clips I6 are V-shaped and they have outer ends 29 whichenter the wall of the head of the doll. Said ends 20 do not pass through the wall of the doll, and they preferably do not pass through the reinforcing webs I1, although they may enter openings or recesses in said webs I1.
In the embodiment shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the
adjacent laterally bent ends of the members l6 enter the member IS.
The eye-ball members l2 are provided with V flanges l2a which limit the turning movement of said eye-ball members. Said eye-ball members can be made of metal or any other suitable ma terial. Each of them is provided with a weighted arm l3 so that the eye-ballsrare caused to turn when the head of the doll is tilted.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, it can be assumed that the two separate members I6 which are shown in Fig. 2 are replaced by a single in' tegral spring-wire member, whose shape and size is that of the two members l6 shown in Fig. 2.
This makes it possible to eliminate ber l9.
Up to the present, time it has not been comthe' mem- .mercial to make a dolls head ofres'ilient andi position, particularly if said eye-members are movable. 7 v p In effect, the improved head has a reinforcement which is vulcanized to the front and/or to the side portions thereof, and this reinforcement is not to be limited to any particular ma-' terial.
7 Generally. speaking, my invention applies to any type of dolls head which is reinforced, and more particularly to a dolls head made of bendable'rubber and which is reinforced. The invention is not to be limited to theuse of the reinforcement at the part or parts which are shown in the specific embodiments illustrated herein, since for certain purposes the area for reinforcement may be varied and increased or diminished inysize.
One of the main objects of the inventionis to sufliciently reinforce a dolls head made of bendable rubber so that said head can be handled,
during the assembly of the doll, with the same ease'as though said head were rigid.
The head of .the doll is provided with the usual opening at the bottom thereof, and said head can be connected to the body of the doll by any conventional means, such as a washer W, a hook H, and an elastic E. The body B of the doll may be of any suitabletype and this has a neck portion which enters the socket which is pro vided at the bottom of the hollow head I0.
I .have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes andomissions may be made without departing from its spirit.
