CYLINDRICAL DRUM TUMBLER USED IN THE PROCESS OF MIXING PAINT Filed 001;. 26, 1932 INVENZR v i BY 4! fi/s/ ATT NEY Patented June 11, 1935 UNITE-D sTATss.
PATENT OFFICE C YLINDRICAL DRUM TUMBLER USED 1N THE PROCESS OF MIXING PAINT Alfred C. Sc hmohl, Beaver Falls, Pa assignor to V Koppel Industrial Car and Equipment Company, Koppel, Pa., a corporation of Pennsyl- Vania Application October 26, 1932, Serial No. 639,665 r 2 Claims. .25941) j ing wheels ll, said wheels being suitably keyed This invention relates to drum tumblers and more particularly to that type of tumbler which is used in the mixing of pigment and a liquid in the manufacture of paint after said pigment and liquid has been placed into a cylindrical drum or any other suitable container.
One of the objects of the invention is the rotation of the drum upon suitably spaced wheels thereby agitating the pigment and liquid so as to thoroughly mix them for commercial use; 1
Another object of this invention is to accelerate the agitating motion of the cylindrical drums so as to efifect the quicker mixing of the contained ingredients. i A further object of the invention is to arrange the agitating wheels in such'a manner so as to setup an oscillating motion within the thereupon mounted cylindrical drum.
Other objects will become apparent to those skilled in the art from the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the present description; in which Fig. 1 shows, in side elevation, an arrangement of parts that constitutethe drum tumbler of the present invention comprised of a base frame, agitator wheels mounted upon the base frame having a cylindrical drum resting thereon and the motive powerfor the rotation of said wheels.
Fig. 2 is a plan View of the drum tumbler shown in Fig. 1. I r
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken along line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing more clearly the arrangement of the agitator wheels andytheir relation to the cylindrical drum.
Fig. 4 shows a modification in the tread portion of the agitator wheels.
Referring now in detail to the. drawing where like reference characters refer to like parts, the base frame I is composed of two oppositely disposed horizontal angles 2 fastened together at their extremities by angular plates 3. Depending from each corner of the structure thus formed are vertical standards 4 having angular clips 5 secured to their free ends to form feet, affording an enlarged bearing area to support the base frame. Adjacent the lower extremities and. secured to the vertical standards are horizontal angular members 6 which add rigidity to the base frame and support a motor I and gear case 8 hereinafter referred to.
Mounted upon the base frame are a pair of journaled axles 9 anchored thereupon by stirrups Hi. The axles are so spaced longitudinally of the base frame so as to allow a cylindrical drum l3 to be supported upon and between the agitated adjacent the journal boxes.
of the wheels of a pair. both gears on the pair of axles in order that the to the extremities of each of theaxles and mount-. The agitating wheels have flanges [2 along their outer edge in order that a drum revolving thereupon will be held within the limits of the flanges and thereby retained upon the wheels. The cylindrical drums are placed in position on the wheels and removed 7 therefrom by any suitable means; they being so handled in the present case by means of a skid (not shown) which is supported by and pivoted about the bar l1, said bar being spaced from the base frame by brackets l8.
The gear 16 mounted on the shaft projecting from the gear case 8, which is driven by the motor 1 adjacent thereto, engages anendless chain 22 which in turn engages a gear I 9 suitably mounted upon each journaled axle adjacent at least one The chain 22 engages wheels will always maintain the same relation to each other and thereby afford a more positive action of mixing, and accelerate the agitating motion imparted to the ingredients contained within the cylindrical drum.
arranged so as to be in staggered relation with respect'to the drum and coincidental with respect to each pair of wheels. The drum I3 being rotated upon and between the wheels, which have their peripheries so indented and the indentures so arranged, will alternately ride upon the true circumferences ii of the wheel and the indentures l4. When a cylindrical drum is in contact with the surface of the true circumference of the forward pair of wheels it will be resting on the indented portion of the other pair of wheels and thisarrangement of true circumferential surfaces and indentures will alternate their positions upon the further rotation of the wheels. The alternate positioning of the indentures and true cir- If it is so desired wheels 20 with cam-shaped treads as shown in Fig. 4 can be substituted for the agitator wheels I I which will impart the same action to the cylindrical drums. Crank 2 f, shown in dot and dash lines in Figs. 1 and 2, may be keyed to one of the axles in order that the agitating wheels may be propelled by manual power if it is so preferred. 7
It will be apparent to one skilled in the art that the construction shown on the drawing may be modified to the extent that the chain 22 may be arranged to engage but one gear I9. By this modification motion will be imparted from the driving axle to the other axle 9 through the drum l3.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 7 1. In a mechanism of the character described,
a pair of spaced driving shafts, agitating members secured in spaced relation adjacent each end of each shaft and adapted to support a cylindrical container, each of said agitating members bein provided with a generally circular outer surface having radially spaced indentures' to impart spaced impacts to the container and each shaft having its agitating members mounted to present a peripheral and indented surface simultaneously to opposite ends of the container and means imparting rotary movement to each shaft.
2. In a device of the character described, a base frame, transverse rotary axles journaled in longitudinal spaced relation on the frame, wheel shaped members comprising a container supporting tread of general circular form having radially spaced indentures and a flange at one, side of the tread, two of said wheel shaped members being fixed to each axle with the tread portions directed inwardly from the ends of the axles and an indenture of the tread of one member opposite an unindentured surface of the tread of the opposing member, and means for imparting rotary, movement to said members."
