'1 claims. '(01. 188 -258) This invention relates to wrought metal rein- ,forcement and assemblyfeatures;v
This invention hasutility when incorporated in metallic brake shoes, especially for wheels for rolling stock. As shown, there is key anchoring of the metal back as a reinforcement for the shoe.. 7
Referring to the drawing: l Fig. l isa plan viewof the sheet metal strap back reinforcement for a brake shoe; Fig.2 is a section on the line II-II, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III, Fig. 1 Fig. 4. is a section on the line IV-IV, Fig. 1;
Fig; 5 is a side elevation of the back reinforcement of Fig. l showingthe arch in section;
Fig. 6 is a medial longitudinal sectionthrough, the shoe; and
Fig. is a'plan View of the back of the shoe.
A sheet metal back is provided having genreinforcement, and at thismid-position 5 drop side and depressed marginal portions? of the general extent of the depression 3 and in the same direction have medially reverse throw or raised portions 33. These upward throw reverse portions 8 provide re-entrant portions 9 forming a narrowed region in which hook-over termini m of the arch may assemble therewith.
These hook-over portions it have riser por tions ll abutting the narrowed portions 9 and have cross-over l2 therebetween. This reinforcement is thus of two portions. The sheet metal main back between the drop sides I and the central. longitudinal depressions 3 has parallel extending portions l3, M. It is thus. seen that there is in effect a longitudinally extending medialreinforcement rib of this depression 3, ormarginally thereof there is a pair of Iongitudinally extending ribs l3, l4.. It is noted that there is continuity of the metal for full ditionally strengthening dueto therein forcing rib 3, which rib has continuity past the arch l2 at the portionfi. establishes a ing through the openings 2.
Between these terminal transverse extent.
rigidity for this construction, especially at the mounting lug provided at the arch [2.
With this as the skeleton of wrought metal,
the cast of the brake shoe thereabout has gen- -eral body [5 with back extension It at the termini with projection H to effect the key Additionally,
OFF I L through the openings 5 there is flow body portion to keying mass. [8 in the depression 3.
About the archriser portion l2 there is enveloping cast 19 from the body mass of the shoe,
In this general structure there isprovision for a shoe of simple form" which may have chilled termini-16in the body l5 and thus provide a structure of substantial form.in maintaining its mounting and general structure even as undergoing extremes of wear and the hazards of tending past said lug and away from said lug 25. the major extentthereof, said depression exin opposite directions, said depression having f anchor openings through which the body protrudes to overlap the edges of said opening.
2. A brake shoe comprising a body, asheet metal back, and a mounting lug, there being a supplementaryreinforcement for the back past the lug including a depression medially. of the" back, longitudinally past said lug, in opposite. directions, said back being raised on opposite sides adjacent the lug.
3. A brake shoe comprising a body, a sheet metal back,.and a mountinglug, said back hav-. ing termini and therebetween parallel depression portions longitudinally of the back, .at least one of saiddepression portions being continuous past the lug, n opposite'directions, and said. back at the lug being imperforate in its 4. A brake shoe comprising a body, a mount ing lug, anda sheet metalback having medially thereof terminal and intermediate openings in a longitudinal series, and a central depression continuous past thelug in opposite directions becross section past the narrowed portion 8. This is with absence of any cutout and involves adtween the terminal openings in which theintermediate openingsare located to serve as keying means for the body as protruding therethrough to overlap the edges of said openings.
5. :A brake shoe comprising'a body, a sheet metal back, said back having a central depression longitudinally of its extent and. medially of its extent being marginally raised oppositely to the groove to provide a narrowed region, and a hook member arch at said narrowed region.
6. A brake shoe comprising a body, a sheet metal back, and a mounting lug, said back having medially of its extent terminal and intermediate openings in a longitudinal series spaced from the lug, and a depression between the terminal openings in which the intermediate openings are located, said body having key assembly with the back through said terminal openings in providing thickened termini for the shoe,
said body through said intermediate openings,
pression overlapping the edges of said opening 7 means.
