- 1. Field of the Invention
- This invention relates to a foam sword, more particularly to a foam sword made up of an acute isosceles ethafoam wedge with a handle extending downward from the base.
- 2. Description of Related Art
- FIG. 1 illustrates a conventional foam sword for playing and direct forceful physical contact with the body.
- The aforesaid foam sword includes a blade which is flimsy or fragile, and/or includes a handle that extends too far within the blade for the body to be safe from harm when struck forcefully by the aforementioned foam sword.
- The aforesaid toy has disadvantages in that either the foam sword is too flimsy or fragile and bends or breaks easily, or the foam sword is too hard, and injuries to the aforementioned body occur.
- Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a foam sword that is capable of overcoming the aforementioned problems.
- Accordingly, a foam sword of this invention comprises: an acute isosceles ethafoam wedge with a handle extending downward from the base. The ethafoam wedge is tapered to a point, allowing the apex to bend with pressure so as not to break The base is thick enough and made of strong enough material (2.2 lb density) to withstand concussive force without allowing the blade to become flimsy. In addition, the other end of the handle is padded with a cylinder of foam, making the foam sword both durable and safe for direct forceful physical contact with the body.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a conventional foam sword for playing and direct forceful physical contact with the body.
- FIG. 2 depicts an exploded view of the foam sword.
- FIG. 3 depicts a side view of the foam sword.
- FIG. 4 depicts another side view of the foam sword.
- FIG. 5 depicts a top view of the foam sword.
- FIG. 6 depicts variations of blade designs.
- FIG. 7 depicts variations of pommel designs.
- FIG. 8 depicts variations of guard designs.
- FIG. 9 depicts a glowing wire running along the blade to reinforce and illuminate the edge.
- FIG. 10 depicts a double bladed sword that unscrews in the middle of the handle.
- FIG. 11 depicts a spear length handle that unscrews to form a sword and staff.
- FIG. 12 depicts a sword with the handle concealed within the base of the blade.
- Begin with a 2″×24″×108″ plank of 220 grade Ethafoam from Dow Chemical Corporation.
- Using a table saw, cut into three 2″×24″×36″ planks.
- Measure and mark every 4″ along the 24″ edges.
- Using a straight edge and a pen, draw diagonal lines to form right triangles 4″×36″×36.22″.
- Cut along the lines to form right triangular wedges 2″×4″×36″×36.22″.
- Trim the base of one of the wedges to form an acute isosceles wedge 2″×4″×36″×36″.
- Adjust the saw blade to 45° and bevel each 36″ edge at ¼″ (or 1″ for a sharper blade).
- Using a 6″×¾″ spade drill bit, drill a 6″×¾″ hole in the 2″×4″ base of the wedge.
- This hole must be exactly centered, so using clamps and a drill press is recommended.
- Insert a 12″ or 14″ long piece of ¾″ PVC piping into the 6″×¾″ hole.
- To hold the handle in place, use super 77 grade 3M spray glue.
- Spray the hole and the top 6″ of the handle, wait 30 seconds, then assemble.
- Cut a 2″ length from a tube of PVC pipe insulation with a ¾″ hole.
- Apply the 2″ length of PVC pipe insulation to the exposed end of the handle.
- Cover the handle with duct tape, leather or fabric.
- Add an optional guard between the blade and the handle to replicate a rapier, foil, epee, saber, cutlass, broadsword, smallsword, longsword, claymore, samurai sword, ninja sword, or any other sword.
- To add Cool Neon, cut a groove ¼″ deep and {fraction (1/16)}″ wide from the 4″ edges to the tip of the sword.
- Drill a ⅛″ hole into the groove 2″ from the tip of the sword.
- Run 72″ of Cool Neon along the groove and through the ⅛″ hole.
- Connect the Cool Neon to a switch, driver and 9v battery.
- Cut holes of appropriate sizes and shapes into the base of the sword blade.
- Sink the switch, driver and9v battery into the appropriate holes.
- Decorate the handle with rings of PVC pipe insulation.
- Spray paint or duct tape and foil tape the handle black and silver.
Claims (12)
