Abstract

A foam filled pillow shaped in the form of a Christian cross with flat surfaces having imprinted on them scriptures or the like and optionally a stylized “JeSus” on the front and rear sides. A fabric pillow cover having a zippered opening with a narrow cover flap on a portion of the thin sides permits washing of the cover.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates generally to pillows. More specifically, the invention is a pillow shaped in the form of a Christian cross with all planar surfaces having imprinted on them scriptures or the like and with or without a stylized “JeSus” on the front and rear sides of the horizontal bar.

2. DESCRIPTION OF THE RELATED ART

The related art of interest describes variously shaped pillows with some having indicia, but none describes the present invention. There is a need for Christian parents instilling Christian values on their children capable of reading and still enable them to use as pillows. The relevant art will be discussed in the order of perceived relevance to the present invention.

U.S. Design Pat. No. D445,622 S issued on Jul. 31, 2001, to Tamara L. Fenichel discloses an ornamental pillow shaped in the form of a Christian cross with a stylistic “JeSus” decorated on the front and rear surfaces. The remaining surfaces of the cross have not been decorated. The design is distinguishable for lacking the scripture indicia on either the remaining sides or on all sides. There is no suggestion for adding the scripture indicia on the ornamental pillow.

U.S. Pat. No. 4,020,511 issued on May 3, 1977, to Samuel M. Terry describes a foam bed pillow comprising a rectangular one-piece body of open cell urethane foam formed with a regular pattern of interconnected grooves in the form of diamonds, clover leaves, triangles, and circles. The pillow is distinguishable because the urethane foam material must have a specific structural pattern internally.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 313,141 issued on Dec. 25, 1990, to Linda L. M. Witter et al. describes an ornamental child's tooth pillow having a fringed M-shape with a pocket on one side, and decorated with a flower pattern, a child's name and a “Tooth Pillow” printed over the pocket. The pillow is distinguishable for its significantly different configuration and decorating indicia.

U.S. Pat. No. D443,420 S issued on Jun. 2, 2001, to Mary L. Holland describes an ornamental scripture wallpaper design having five scriptures with figures of a lamb, a series of parallel rainbow arcs, a dove, a fruit tree, and a lamp. The ornamental scripture design is distinguishable for being limited to wallpaper.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,778,468 issued on Jul. 14, 1998, to Janis E. Saarela et al. describes a pillow-tote-angelic companion comprising a pillow in the shape of a billowy, white cloud having decorations such as a golden star and a front pocket in the shape of a crescent moon with an angel. A rear pocket is available to carry books and small toys. A handle is attached on the upper side. The pillow and tote bag combination device is distinguishable for its required cloud shape and handle.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 354,651 issued on Jan. 24, 1995, to Rita Fitzpatrick describes an ornamental shoulder-shaped pillow comprising a human shoulder-shaped pillow having “A shoulder to cry on” printed on and several teardrops on one side. The pillow is distinguishable for its distinctive shape and indicia.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 387,936 issued on Dec. 23, 1997, to Celia J. Boyd describes a set of bedding comprising an ornamental pillow and a padded mattress decorated with male and female cartoon faces and indicia reciting “GOD TELLS LITTLE CHILDREN TO COME”. The bedding set is distinguishable for its requirement for rectangular bedding pieces and cartoon faces.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 414,129 issued on Sep. 21, 1999, to Glenn M. Clegg describes an ornamental scripture bracelet. The article is distinguishable for being limited to an engraved religious bracelet.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 423,270 issued on Apr. 25, 2000, to Hans Studerus describes an ornamental football-shaped article having “Happy Jack” and “Feel good—have fun” indicia with drawings of people using the football cushion. The support cushion is distinguishable for its football shape and fun encouraging indicia.

U.S. Design Pat. No. 331, 520 issued on Dec. 8, 1992, to Mark Ruddy describes an ornamental car pillow having a rectangular piece with a car symbol and side wings curved forward. The car pillow is distinguishable for its distinctive automobile shape and design.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,117,569 issued on Jun. 2, 1992, to Revonna L. Bean describes a greeting card comprising a front panel, a translucent panel having a relevant printed message, and a back panel having a Christian cross. The greeting card is distinguishable for its restriction to a greeting card format.

U.S. Design Pat. No. D440,807 S issued on Apr. 24, 2001, to Roger Liu et al. describes an ornamental neck cushion containing a gel or an undefined compressible material having a cylindrical shape with a narrowed center portion and a square cross-section. The neck cushion is distinguishable for its distinctive shape.

U.S. Pat. No. 4,021,871 issued on May 10, 1977, to Harold Wortmen describes a pillow cushion having a rectangular shape with two panels of foam material having peaks and recesses on their inside surfaces resembling an egg carton. The filler material is a fibrous material which prevents the internal projections from slipping laterally. The pillow is distinguishable for its required foam panel structure and fibrous filling construction.

None of the above inventions and patents, taken either singularly or in combination, is seen to describe the instant invention as claimed. Thus, a religious pillow cross with educational and comforting indicia is desired.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention is directed to a soft foam pillow shaped in the form of a Christian cross with all planar surfaces having imprinted on them scriptures or the like and with or without a stylized “JeSus” printed on the front and rear sides. The scripture can be one word or a phrase. A wool or cotton cover having a zippered opening with a cover flap is used and can be washed clean. The religious pillow can be used as a decorative and informative cushion for chairs, sofas, beds and the like.

Accordingly, it is a principal object of the invention to provide a soft foam pillow in the shape of a Christian cross.

It is another object of the invention to provide a soft foam pillow in the shape of a Christian cross having all planar sides.

It is a further object of the invention to provide a soft foam pillow having a stylized “JeSus” printed on the front and rear surfaces of the Christian cross with Christian scripture printed on the remaining planar surfaces.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a soft foam pillow having Christian scripture printed on all planar sides of the pillow.

It is an object of the invention to provide improved elements and arrangements thereof for the purposes described which is inexpensive, dependable and fully effective in accomplishing its intended purposes.

These and other objects of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following specification and drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

The present invention is directed to a foam filled Christian cross having indicia printed on its flat surfaces. In a first embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, a [0031] pillow cross 10 with indicia comprises a pillow in the shape of a Christian cross with a vertical bar 14 having a first length and a horizontal bar 16 having a second length shorter than the first bar 14 and perpendicular thereto proximate to the top of the horizontal bar 16. The pillow cross 10 has all flat surfaces 18 including its thickness which is uniform. Indicia is printed on all flat surfaces 18. The indicia is selected from the group consisting of a word or words taken from Christian scripture 20, JeSus 22, and mixtures thereof.
The [0032] outside cover 24 is preferably a wool fabric relating to lambs in the Bible, but can be cotton. The foam filling 25 (hidden) is preferably a closed cell foam material such as polyurethane foam or a memory foam formed as a cross to snugly fit the cover 24. The foam filling 25 can be inserted in the cover 24 by having a zippered opening 26 starting from the bottom of the vertical bar 14 along the middle of the thickness and pass up to the underside of the horizontal bar 16. The zipper 26 can be conveniently covered with a flap 28. This zippered arrangement of the cover 24 permits the cleaning of the cover 24 without the foam filling.
In FIGS. 3 and 4, a second embodiment of a [0033] pillow cross 30 is illustrated with only scripture 20 printed on every flat side. The scripture 20 can be an entire verse continuing along one front side from the top of the vertical bar 14 to the horizontal bar 16, along the horizontal bar 16, and down to the lower portion of the vertical bar 14. The rear side of the pillow cross 30 can have a continuation of the verse. The sides 32 of the cross 30 can recite another passage starting from the top side in a circular fashion. Alternatively, single religious phrases or words can be printed on all sides of the pillow cross 30. The printed letters should be large for children to read and learn. The structures of the pillow crosses 10 and 30 are otherwise identical.
The pillow crosses [0034] 10 and 20 can be made in five representative sizes with the height A, width B, depth or thickness C, and the face width D given in inches.

Therefore, the height A can range from 14-84 inches; the width B can range from 12-72 inches; the depth C can range from 2-8 inches; and the face width D can range from 3-10 inches for the five pillows. [0035]
It is to be understood that the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described above, but encompasses any and all embodiments within the scope of the following claims. [0036]

Claims

I claim:

1. A pillow cross with indicia comprising:

a pillow made of foam, a fabric cover, said pillow covered by said fabric cover, said pillow and cover being in the shape of a Christian cross, with a vertical bar having a first predetermined length and a horizontal bar having a second predetermined length which is shorter than said first length, and perpendicular thereto proximate to the top of the horizontal bar;

said cross having all flat surfaces and a uniform thickness; and

indicia printed on all flat surfaces, said indicia selected from the group consisting of Christian scripture, JeSus, and mixtures thereof.

2. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the pillow is made of polyurethane foam, and the pillow cover is made of a wool cover conforming to the shape of said polyurethane foam cross.

3. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the pillow is made of a memory foam, and the pillow cover is made of a cotton cover conforming to the shape of said memory foam cross.

4. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the indicia is Christian scripture.

5. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the indicia is a stylized JeSus on front and rear sides of the cross and Christian scripture on the remaining sides of the cross.

6. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the indicia is Christian scripture on all sides.

7. A pillow cross with indicia according to claim 1, wherein the fabric cover has a zippered opening with a flap cover, and is positioned on a portion of the thin sides of the cross.
