invention is to provide an improved package of this character which may be more economically manufactured than those a at present in use; which will present a package of greater capacity in proportion to its size than known packages, and which will embody features of safety peculiar to its novel construction. Ifurther objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in the detailed description which follows.
In the accompanying drawing; Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a match package constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the paper insert carrying the match heads.
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the structure of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an inside face view of the outer wrap- I per in extended condition.
Fig. 5 is a central vertical sectional view through the package, and x Pig. 6 is a horizontal sectional view-upon lines 6-4 of Fig. 5.
Like numerals designate corresponding parts in all of the figures of the drawing.
The package of the presentinvention is made almost wholly of paper, and comprises a cover, I, consisting of a sheet of heavy pip r or light cardboard, bent to bowed formation .as at Q, and having its free ends bound to each other and to the match carrying insert, by a staple or other suitable fastening member I. The'insert consists of a pair of webs of paper comprising the lower bars I, which lie face to face, and which are integral .with the match stems I, carrying v the usual match heads II. The match stems are cut in any suitable fashion to accomplish two obiects: First, to weaken these stems at the points of attachment with the bars I, and second, to provide portions which may be projected through the side openings ll of the cover to be grasped by the thumb and fore-finger, so that any given match stem may be readily torn loose from its attachment with the bar I, and pulled out through the corresponding side opening II. In doing this, the match heads are drawn against oneor both of the friction surfaces l2, and ignited.
By slightly flexing the package to bend its upper portion out of vertical alignment with the lower portion which carries the staple I, the free fingergrasp portions are, caused to spring out as indicated .at l3a,.in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and thus ends of the cover together, a group the user may grasp this portion and break the whole. match loose from its. point of attachment, at N, with the base bar 8} it being observed that the matches are out along the lines I! and It to leave only a narrow stem H to constitute the con- 5 nection between the match stems l and the base bari.
The edges .of the cover 5 are bent inwardly as indicated at II in Fig. 6. This closes the sides of the package, prevents the possibility that any 10 match heads may project beyond the sides of the package, and stiifens and straightens the cover to a desirable degree in view of the fact that the cover is weakened somewhat by the provision of the openings II. By providing two rows of matches, I double the capacity of the ordinary match package, and I greatly add to the safety of the user by the provision of a package which is never opened to expose the match heads. The staple 'l permanently closes the package and the matches are withdrawn through the side open ings. The point of ignition of the match heads is so distant from the heads of .the remaining matches that there is no danger of the acicdental ignition of, such remaining matches' The match stems being flat and of paper permits the operator; (by'pressing the friction surfaces II toward each other as the match is withdrawn) to get any desired degree of friction, and thus insure the lighting of the match by the act of so withdrawing the same. This increaseof capacity is not accompanied by any increase in size of the package as a whole. Further, it will be observed that after a match has been withdrawn from one side of the group of matches, the match opposite thereto will, upon withdrawal, be engaged by both of the surfaces l2, and thus doubly insure proper ignition of the same.
I contemplate using the exposed surface, A, of the match package for the reception of any 40 suitable advertising matter. It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth, but that it ineludes within its purview whatever charges fairly come within either the terms or the spirit of the 4 appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
l. A match package comprising a cover bent to bowed formation, means for binding the free of paper matches comprising a portion bound to the cover and stems attached to said portion by weakened members, said stems comprising fingers-grasp portions adjacent to said weakened members, and
said cover having a side opening through which said finger-grasp portions may be projected and through which the matches may be withdrawn,
and said cover being provided with friction surfaces upon its inner face, adapted to be engaged by the heads of the matches to ignite the same as the matches are being pulled through said side openings. I t
2. A structure as described in claim 1, wherein the cover is provided with inturned edge portions substantially throughout its entire length.
3. A match package comprising a paper cover having openings formed therethrough adjacent its opposite ends, and having, friction surfaces upon its inner face inwardly of said openings, said cover being bent to bowed formation, means for uniting the free ends of the cover to hold it in bowed formation, and a pair of paper match carryingelementsbound within the cover and betweenthe free ends of the same, said elements comprising fixed base portions and a group of paper match stems, said match stems being cut to form free finger-grasp portions and a uniting, weakened stem, and match heads carried by the stems and adapted to be engaged by the ignition surfaces when the matches are withdrawn through the side openings.
4. A structure as recited in claim 3 wherein said cover is provided with inturned edge portions throughout substantially the entire length thereof. 4
5. A match package comprising a paper cover bent to bowed formation and having its free ends permanently united, a pair of side openings formed in said cover adjacent its ends, friction surfaces upon the opposite sides of the cover, inwardly of the side openings and adjacent thereto, a plurality of webs of paper matches bound between the ends of the cover, each web comprising a fixed base bar and a plurality of match stems, said match stems being cut adjacent their point of attachment to the said base bar to form relatively wide and strong finger-grasp portions, and relatively narrow and weak attaching portions by which the stems are held to said bars until the time of use arrives.
