Description

SPOOL HOLDER Filed May 3, 1934 Patented May 14, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFKIE srooL HOLDER Alexander Kaplan, Cleveland, Ohio Application May a, 19s4,-seria1 No. 723,653 '3 Claims. '(01. 242- 139) This invention relates to spool holders, and has for its main object to provide a spool holder of simple and practical construction which will support a plurality of spools of thread and prevent theft thereof. Another. object of the invention is to provide a spool holder ofsaid character in which the spools upon the stopping of the sewing machine as is the case when the spool is rotated by the unwinding of the thread. 7
With the above and other objects in view, the 20 invention will be hereinafter fully described as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and the novel features will be distinctly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing, similar characters of reference are used to designate corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a spool holder constructed in accordance with my invention, certain parts being broken away to better show the invention,
3 Fig. 2 is an end elevation,
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 illustrates the means for locking the lock plate, and
Fig. 5 illustrates the spool weight.
Referring to the drawing, l represents a stand which is adapted to be fixed to the top of a sewing machine, and having a socket 2 for receiving the lower and round end 3 of an upright rectangular guide and supporting bar 4. A thumb-screw 5 is provided for securing the guide bar 4 in the stand. Fixed to the guide bar 4 near its lower end is base 6 having a central depending boss 1. Cast in. the base 6 are a plurality of upstanding pins, indicated by 8, for the purpose of supporting spools of thread designated by 9, which rest upon the top of said base. The pins 8 are arranged in opposite pairs and forming rows at each side of the longitudinal center line of the base. Depending bosses III at the underside of the base provide better support for the pins 8.
Slidably mounted upon the guide bar 4 above the base 6 is a lock-plate H of the same size and shape as said base and having a central upuse to prevent falling of the unwound thread wardly extending boss 12, which is provided with a rectangular opening l3 for receiving said guide bar. The lock-plate H is provided with a pluralitylof openings l4 arranged on the same centers asthe pins 8, so that said openings will be above and'opposite theupper ends of the spools of thread- The lock-plate I I is limited in its downward movement by means of a stop pin [5 fixed in the upright bar 4, which point is below the upper ends of the pins 8. A suitable lock 16 is provided in the boss [2, which boss is enlarged at its forward side for accommodating the lock. Said lock is operated by a key entering vertically at 18 and actuating the lock-pin l9. which is adapted to enter a recess 20 of the guide bar 4 and thereby lock the plate II to said guide bar and prevent vertical sliding movement of said plate on said bar. The plate ll may thereby be locked and unlocked only by an authorized person.
Resting upon the upper end of each of the spools of thread is a disc of metal 2|, which is cupped out at 22 for receiving the end of the spool 9 and provided with a central opening 23 for the pin 8. The disc of metal, due to its weight, prevents rotation of the spool by the unwinding of the thread therefrom, and the thread will not fall therefrom upon stopping of the sewing machine. The disc 2! is larger in diameter than the opening Id of the lock-plate ll so as not to pass therethrough and thereby prevent the spool of thread being lifted from the pin 8, when said plate is locked in position. The peripheral edge 24 of the disc 2| serves as a guide for the thread unwinding from the spool and is rounded in its vertical plane for smoothness in drawing the .thread over said edge.
Fixed to the top of the bar 4 is a thread guide consisting of a longitudinally extending bar 25 having a central boss 26, and carrying cross-arms 21 arranged in vertical alignment with the transversly opposite pairs of pins 8. At the free ends of the cross-arms 21 are hooks 28 for guiding the thread, indicated by 29,'unwinding from the spools, which hooks are directly over the pins 8. A stop pin 30 is fixed in the guide bar 4 for limiting the upward movement of the lock-plate II, and a recess 3| is provided in said bar adapted to receive the lock-pin IQ for holding said plate in its up position and thereby permit removal or replacement of the spools of thread upon the pins 8.
From the drawing and description, it is apparent that spools of thread arranged on end may be locked against theft; that the spools of thread may be conveniently and quickly placed in the holder by an authorized person; that the base supporting the spools of thread may be easily removed from the stand for carrying to an authorized person; that the spools of thread will remain stationary while the thread is unwinding therefrom around the edge 24 and over same and through the guide hooks 28.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is: I I
1. In a spool holder, the combination of a base, pins projecting from the base adapted to receive spools, a bar projecting from the base, a plate slidably mounted upon the bar, the plate having openings opposite said pins, means for limiting the movement of said plate upon said bar, from a position below the upper ends of said pins to a position for permitting removal of the spools from said pins, a lock carried by saidplate, the lock having a lock-pin, and the lock-pin being adapted to lock said plate to said bar in either of said positions v 2. In a spool holder, the combination of a base, pins projecting from the base adapted to receive spools, a bar projecting from the base, a plate slidably mounted upon the bar, the plate having openings opposite said pins, a metal disc adapted to rest upon the upper end of each spool, the metal disc being larger than said openings of said plate, means for limiting the movement of said plate upon said bar from a position below the upper ends of said pins to a position for permitting removal of the spools from said pins, a lock carried by said plate, the lock having a lock-pin, and said bar having recesses adapted to receive said lock-pin when said plate is in either of said positions. V I
3, In a spool holder, thecombination of a, base, pins projecting from the base adapted to receive spools, a bar projecting from the base, a plate slidably mounted upon the bar, the plate having openings opposite said pins, a disc resting upon the upper end of each spool, the disc being larger than said openings of said plate, means carried by 'said bar for limiting the movement of said plate upon said bar from a position below the upper ends of said pins to a position for permitting removal of the spools from said pins, a lock carried by said plate, the lock having a lock-pin adapted to engage said bar for locking said plate in either of said positions, a thread guide fixed to said bar, and the thread guide having hooks above said pins for receiving the spools.
