of Massachusetts a corporation Application May 26, 1933, Serial No. 672,936
13 Claims.
This invention relates 'to an improved weft replenishing loom structure and more particularly to certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts in a weft replenishing loom of the stationary magazine type for effecting the appropriate tensiom'ng of the weft thread with certointy and in such a manner as to render the same efiective immediately after transfer.
In the use of weft replenishing looms of the stationary magazine type, as heretofore employed, it has been the practice to provide stationary magazines having one or more compartments, each provided with a support and release mechanism for permitting the release of a. bobbin for movement into position for transfer from one or another of said compartments, dependent upon I the color desired, through the actuation of suitable selector means controlling the operation of the release mechanism. In this as in other types of replenishing looms as heretofore employed, however, it has been impossible to provide a suitable and appropriate tensioning of the weft thread immediately after transfer in such a manner as to insure adequate and uniform tension on the first pick after transfer. This failure to provide adequate means for tensioning the weft thread immediately aftertransfer to the shuttle has resulted in serious imperfections in certain classes of woven fabrics such as are adapted to be formed on looms of this character.
One object of the invention is the provision in a loom structure of this character of means for employing a positive tensioning member in association with a transferable bobbin, together with means for utilizing the same as replenishable elements in connection with the usual replenishable shuttles.
Another object of the invention is the provi-,
sion in a loom structure of this character of as- ...sociated magazine compartments for receiving bobbins and tension members in such a manner as to retain each bobbin in operative relation with its associated tension member or vice versa, together with means for permitting the movement of each bobbin and its associated tension member into position for transfer to a shuttle.
A further object of the invention is the proviguide members arranged in such relationship to each other as to furnish means for guiding a bobbin and its associated tension member into position for transfer to a shuttle while maintain ing them in operative relation to each other.
A further object of the invention is the provision in a loom structure of this character of magazine and supply mechanism for furnishing a bobbin and associated tension member in operatlve relation to each other into position for transfer to a shuttle upon the operation of suitable selector mechanism, together with means for effecting the transfer of the bobbin and tension member to the shuttle substantially simultaneously.
Other objects and advantages of the invention relate to various improved details of construction and novel arrangements of the parts as will be more fully set forth in the detailed description to follow.

Fig. 6 is a detail view, partially in section, taken substantially along the line t-s of Fig. 5, and
showing the guide members for guiding the base portion of a bobbin into position for transfer.
Fig. 7 is a detail view, partially in section, taken substantially along the line 'l| of Fig. 5, and showing the guide members for guiding the tip of the bobbin into position for transfer,
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of one of the combined rocking support and release members for supporting associated bobbins and tension members and effecting their release for transfer at the appropriate point in the loom operation, and,
Fig. 9 is an end elevational view of the same. In that form of loom structure illustrated herein, designates a portion of the side frame of a conventional type of replenishable loom,
having a lay beam 2 provided with a stationary shuttle box 3 located upon one end thereof and arranged in operative relation with a stationary magazine 4. The magazine 4 and its associated mechanism may be supported from a suitable bracket member 5 carried by a part of the side frame and properly arranged with relation to certain of the operating parts of the loom mechanism for actuation thereby at appropriate periods in the formation of the weave, as will be understood by those skilled in the art.
The magazine as shown herein, consists oi. plates 1, 8 and 9 suitably spaced from each other, and supported in spaced relation with each other by bars I0 and II, to which they maybe fixedly and adjustably secured by bolts l2 and, or other suitable fastening means. One or more of the connecting bars l0 and II may be formed integral with or secured to the bracket'5 in any suitable manner. The spaced plates 1,18 and 8 are each provided with suitably-positioned vertical ribs |6, |1 and I8, cooperating to form a series of asso ciated compartments, which in the present case are four in number and. are designated by the reference characters 20, 2|, 22 and 23. 'Each of these associated compartments, as shown, corn prises a bobbin chamber 26 and a tension member chamber 21, the bobbin chamber and tension member chamber in each case being so arranged relativeto each other as to hold a plurality of bobbins and associated tension members in vertical columns with each bobbin and its associated tension member arranged in operative relation with each other in such a manner as to be capable of release substantially simultaneously preliminary to their movement into position for transfer. The plates 8 and 9 are provided with vertical slots 30 and 3| respectively, located between adjacent ribs I! and I8, the slots 30 connecting the bobbin chamber 26 and tension member chamber 21 forming each of the associated compartments 20, 2|, 22, and 23. The provision of the slots 30 and 3| permits passage of the weft end from each bobbin to its associated tension member and from thence to the thread holding plate 32, and also allows the escape of the weft end from the magazine without injury or breakage upon release of a bobbin and its associated tension member.
.A combined rocking support and release member 35 is mounted below and in operative relationship with each set of associated compartments, and may be provided with a supporting shaft 3E mounted in a suitable bearing in. the plate lfor actuation by appropriate selector means through a part of the loom mechanism. The member 35 comprises a portion 31 adapted to engage and support the base of a bobbin, a bobbin tip holder '38 and a pair of arms 39 shaped to provide a filling replenishment. I vided with an opening 62 extending therethrough ing a tension member. The several rocking support and release members 35 are each mounted in operative relation with one of the associated compartments 20, 2| and 22 and 23, and are adapted for operation at suitable points in the formation of the weave to release an associated bobbin and tension member for movement into position for transfer.
Downwardly converging guide members 40 and M are located beneath and in operative relation with those portions of the associated compartments located adjacent to the plate I to receive and guide the base of each bobbin into position for transfer upon its release by movement of one of the members 35, and similarly arranged guide members 42, t3 and 44, are located beneath and in operative relation with those portions of the associated compartment located adjacent to the plates 8 and 9 to receive and guide the tips of the respective bobbins and the tension members respectively to a position for transfer upon their release by one of the members 35. The guide members 40, 4| and 42, 43 and 44, 45 all converge downwardly and may be resiliently held on pivotal supports 46, by one or more coiled springs 48, to retain an associated bobbin and tension member in alignment with each other above and in appropriate position for transfer to a replenishable shuttle upon actuation of a transfer member 50, asshown in Figs. 3 and 5 of the drawings.
The transfer member may be pivotally supported from the frame 5, as at 52, and provided with fork portions 53 and 54 for engagement with the bobbin and tension member respectively to effect their transfer from the guide members to the shuttle substantially simultaneously. The transfor member 50 is provided with 2. depending arm 56 which is pivotally connected as at 51, with a trip 58, notched at its active face 59, to engage a dagger Gll'on the lay beam 2 upon indication of The lay beam 2 is proand positioned to register with the recess in the shuttle body when the shuttle is in replenishing position to permit the ejection of a used bobbin and tension member to a suitable receptacle (not shown), upon transfer.
The type of loom shuttle shown herein is of conventional form in so far as it consists of the usual shuttle body 65 provided with an opening 66 extending entirely therethrough to permit the automatic insertion of a bobbin upon one side of the shuttle body and its automatic ejection from the other after a manner well known in devices of this character. The loom shuttle 65, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, is provided at opposite ends thereof with yielding holding jaws 61 having suitable grooves or depressions 68 formed upon their inner surfaces for receiving the usual circular ribs 69 carried by the base 10 of the bobbin II, as well as for receiving similar ribs 12 carried by a separate tension member 13.
As shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, one form of the invention'comprehends the use of a bobbin 1|, the base I0 of which is engaged by one set of opposed holding jaws 61 after the usual manner, while its associated tension member 13 is mounted in separated relation with and spaced from the tip I4 of the bobbin spindle, and is similarly positioned within and held by the set of opposed holding jaws 61 located within the opposite end of the opening 66 formed in the shuttle body. The detailed construction and arrangement of the bobbin and tension member, as well as the specific form of construction and arrangement of the parts of the tension member are more particularly set forth in my copending application Serial No. 664,854, to which reference is made for a more detailed description thereof.
In that form of bobbin and tension member, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the shuttle body 65 is similar in all respects to that shown in Fig. 1, and is similarly provided with an opening 66 extending entirely therethrough to permit the automatic insertion and ejection of a bobbin, as is well known in devices of this character. The shuttle is provided with a pair of opposed holding jaws 76 located adjacent to one end thereof, each of which has suitable grooves or depressions. l8 formed in the inner faces thereof for receiving circular ribs l9 carried by the base portion 86 of the bobbin 8i A circular rib or enlargement 82 is located upon the base portion til of the bobbin for engagement with suitable grooves 83 formed in the split resilient end portion M of a cylindrical shell 85, which is so formed as to fit over the spindle portion of the bobbin and have the split resilient portions 8t engage over the rib 82 for holding the shell in position upon the bobbin.
A tension device to is mounted within the opposite end portion of the shell 85 and may comprise tensioning members ill arranged in staggered relation for imparting tension to the weft end 88 carried by the bobbin. Aligned openings 89 and 90 are provided in the tension device 86 for the passage of the weft end from the bobbin to the tension device and from the tension device for incorporation into the fabric. A more detailed description and showing of the parts of the bobbin 8 l shell 85 and tension member 8% making up the combined bobbin and tension member 92 is contained in my copending application Serial No. 664,854, to which reference is made.
In effecting the transfer of the bobbin and tension member to and from the shuttle body with that form and arrangement of bobbin and associated tension member as shown in either Figs. 1 or 2 of the drawings, I have provided certain novel means and arrangements of mechanism for supporting these members in replenishing positon and for effecting their transfer'to the shuttle body while they are maintained in suitable operative relation with each other to insure a proper functioning of the parts immediately after transfer and avoid any tendency which might be present for distortion or disarrangement of the bobbin and tension member relative to each other, either during the act of transfer or as they may be positioned within the shuttle body after transfer. In order to accomplish this purpose effectively, the guide members 40, 4! and d2, 43 may be provided with suitable edge flanges 94 and 95 respectively, which serve to provide with the guide members a complete guideway for each bobbin from its point of release to its transfer position. In a like manner, the tension guides M, 45 may be provided with flanges 96 located on opposite sides thereof and so spaced from each other as to furnish a guide channel of suitable width for transferring a tension member from its point of release to its point of transfer without permitting its displacement relative to the bobbin.
When a bobbin and its asociated tension memher are brought into position for transfer to a shuttle, as shown in Fig. of the drawings, they are maintained in transfer position by the resiliently supported guides 40, M, 2, 43, M and 55 until such time as transfer is indicated, when they are forced downwardly substantially simultaneously by operation of the transfer member '58 to force the exhausted bobbin and its tension member out of the shuttle body, as shown in Fig. 5, and force the full bobbin and tension member into engagement with the yielding jaws mounted in the shuttle body. Upon discharge of the exhausted bobbin and itsassociated tension memher, the weft end 91 carried thereby is severed and is carried away by the discharged bobbin and tension member, thus preventing it from being drawn into the shed on movement of the replenish shuttle. as the full bobbin and its tension member are inserted into the shuttle, with the weft end 98 carried thereby secured to the thread holder 32 as is usual in the transfer of full bobbins.
In that form of the invention illustrated herein the magazine structure is as shown particularly adapted for use in connection with a separate bobbin and tension member such as is shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The magazine, however, is capable of being employed in connection with a combined bobbin and tension member of the type shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings by eliminating the outer plate ii of the magazine, and spacing the plates l and 8 from each other a somewhat greater distance than that shown in Fig. 4, to accommodate the combined bobbin and tension member 9% therebetween.
In making such change the tension member guides M and it may be omitted, and the guides i2 and t3 set at a greater distance from the guides to and M. In making these changes, modified supporting and release members may be substituted for the supporting and release members 35. As a means for rendering these changes readily effective without basic change in the magazine mechanism and associated parts, the opposed guide members 40, 42, M and M, 43, it may be adjustably mounted upon bars, located in parallel relation with each other and upon opposite sides of the replenishable shuttle by set screws.
or similar means, so that the tension member guides 44 and 45 may be removed readily and the relative location of the guides 40, 42 and M, 43 changed to conform with the over-all length of the combined bobbin and tension member 92.
In either form of the invention it is to be understood that the bobbin employed is a replenishable bobbin having a portion provided with means adapted for direct engagement with or separation from the usual or any suitable form of holding means carried by the shuttle body for permiting direct insertion or ejection of the bobbin into or out of weft thread supporting position within the shuttle, and that wherever the terms bobbin or replenishable bobbin occurs in the specification or claims it refers to a replenishable bobbin of the type above described.
