- Referring tothe acccmpa'n'yin'g" drawing forf a detailed dese'ription of my invention; the numeral 1 l "designates a rectangular ty-pe receiving pl-ate -pnnched "from suitable m'etal andformed near -its top' edges-with-groove2 2 Beyond thesegrooves the enus 6f the plate are turned downwardlyrto r'ormnat inwardly-inclined 'sid'es 3 that terminate at their lower edges in upturned reinforcing nan'ge's'--t. These flanged lower edges on the sides 3-3 of a each plate 5 permit it to be mounted on a similar plate by inserting those flanged edges I in the grooved portions 22 respectively of theisecond plate. (See Figure 2.)
It is thus possible to compactly stack a number of these plates for convenient filing in a cabinet,-
not shown. I At one end 'of the plate a horizontal tab 5,

It will be'seen from the above description and the accompanying drawing that I have provided a type retaining plate which may bemanufactured at low cost by punching and from suitable metal. n 1
forming it To this type retaining plate a series of type 7 channels may be firmly secured in proper. aline ment in front of means punched from that plate to receive a card bearing the indicia represented by the type in said channels. 7
At their side edges these type retaining plates are formed with flanged projections and grooves I do not wish to be limited to the details of 7 construction and arrangementherein shown and described, for. any changes and modifications may be made therein withinthe scope ofthe sub-.
joined claims. 77
Having described my invention, I claim: 1.A type retaining means comprising a plate,
, a pluralityof type channels, bottom flanges on said type channels at one end thereof, a tab at one side of the outer surface of said plate beneath which the flanges on said'type channels are inserted, leaving their flanged ends open torre'ceive type, and a flanged projection onsaid plate, clos 7 ing the other ends of said type channels and co.-
operating with thetab in firmly securing the.
channels to the plate.
2:111 a device of the character described, the a combination of a holder, a setofhollow members each having inwardly projecting edge flanges with a longitudinal opening along the top side, said members beingside by sideon the holder,
7 means for fastening :the members to the holder at the opposite ends, said fastening means serving to block theentrance to the members at one end while leaving the other end unobstructed.
, 3, In a deviceof-the character described'th'e combination of a holder,. a set of split'tubes mounted thereon, each adapted to hold a row of type in its opening, means comprising a permanent part of the holder for engaging the top of the tubes atone end thereof, and means on the holder for engaging the tubeat the bottom at the. other end. V v .4. The combination ofa holder, at set of i'n dividual split tubes mounted side by sideon the holder, the holder having. an upstandingpore tion extending across the ends and overlapping 5. jlhe combination of a holder, a set of individual split tubes mounted side by side on the holder, the holder having anupstanding portion extending across the ends .and overlapping the tops of the tubes at one end, the tube having an extension at the. other end, and the holder 7 having a lip overlying the extension.
6. The combinationof a holder, a set of individual split tubes mounted side by side on the holder, the holder having meansfor retaining the tubes at one end, there being an opening in the holder beyondthe other end of the tube, the. tube having'an extension projecting fromits base portion and ofiset downwardly to occupy the opening, andthe holder having a lip ofiset upwardly from theopening and now overlying the extension.
7. A type retaining means comprising a plate,
a plurality of type channels, projections at the side edges of said plate for securing the type channels in alignment thereon, the plate projections at one side overlapping base extensions of the channels, to leave that end of the channels open to receive type, the projections on the plate on the other side overlapping the tops' exit of type oneach side of, and at right angles to, the type I lines, the side portions of said plate beyond the grooves'inclining downwardly and inwardly, to a region a considerable distance below the grooved portions of the plate, andreinforcing flanges ,turned upwardlyfrom the lower edges of said downwardly and inwardly inclined sides for the purpose specified.-
9. Adevice of the character described, comprising a holding plateand a set of printing lines thereon, said plate being formed with upwardly facing open grooves extending crosswise of the printing lines and beyond the ends thereof, and with footportions lying below that part of the plate carrying the grooves and directly beneath the grooves, whereby when a series of said devices are stacked the foot portions of one device may occupy thegrooves or" the device next below it.
lo; A device of the character described, comdirection beyond the ends of the type and being Lthenbent downwardly and upwardly to provide transverse upwardly facing open grooves, the
wardly and brought into a region directly beneath the grooves at least as great a distance below that part of the plate carrying the grooves as-is the height of the type holders, so that a series of v V V said plates may be readily stacked.
'the. tops of the tubes at one end, and means for e retaining the tubes at the other end whilejallowing access thereto.
11. A type receiving means comprising a plate,
a set of split tubes mounted side-by side on an intermediate region of the upper surface of the plate; and extending a considerable distance ,above the general plane of said plate, said plate being formed withopen grooves in its surface, one beyond each end of, and at right angles to, the
type channels,-the side portions of said plate beyond the grooves inclining downwardly to a ,region considerably below that. portion of the plate carrying the grooves. to provide feet to enter the corresponding grooves of a similar plate,
whereby they may be assembled in astack for prisinga plate, a set of individual type holders I mounted thereon, the plate extending in each
