Description
Filed May 23, 1936 lllllll .Iumummlmmnnmmtmmmmum INVENTOR Tim/nus Gare BY ATTO R N EY Patented Nov. 2, 1937 I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ssmrr mzon Thomas Gore, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application May as, 1936,861'181 No. 81,397
1 Claim. (01. 30-83) This invention relates to safety razors, and has for its main object and feature the provision of effective means that will stretch or smooth the skin and place it under tension in the act of shaving.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is disclosed in several concrete and preferred forms in which I Fig. 1 is a bottom plan view of a safety razor embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view substantially on the plane of line 2-2 of Fig. 1
Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the combined guard and skin-stretching member;
Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view showing the relation of the oblique engagement surface of the guard member with respect to the cutting edge of the blade and the direction of movement of the cutting stroke; and,
I indicates the blade of a safety razor of any conventional type, 2 is the guard and 3 any suitable holding means. Guard 2 serves also as a skin-stretching member in that it has an engagement surface located, as regards the direction of the cutting stroke, in advance of the cuttingedge of the blade,- said surface being provided with a plurality of hills and valleys extending obliquely with'respect to said cutting edge. As shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the guard is provided with suitable supporting means for a non-rotatable helical member, here a spring 4, the convolutions of which are in contact with each other, which spring finds its seat on opposed abutments 5 that extend, toward each other and are located in spaced relation to the cutting edge of the blade. If desired, a reinforcing member 6 in the form of a wire may extend through the helix from one abutment to another. In Fig. 4 is shown the principle of operation of the device. As thereindicated, arrow X shows the direction of the cutting stroke, arrow Y shows the pitch of .the convolutions of the helix and Z the direction of the stretching of the skin or surface being shaved. The skin of many persons, especially older ones, is oftimes puckered, and in such cases and in cases where pimples are present, the smoothing or stretching action of the guard member on the skin has been found highly advantageous and has been found to prevent cutting of the skin.
I claim:
In a safety razor having a razor blade and holding means therefor, a non-rotatable combined guard and skin-stretching member having an engagement surface located, as regards the direction of the cutting stroke, in advance of the cutting edge of the blade and in spaced relation thereto, said surface consisting of a helical member-the convolutions of which extend obliquely with respect to the cutting edge and are in contact with each other.-
THOMAS GORE.
