. Other-objects and advantages of the invention 1 Q willja'ppear hereinafter. 1.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which f azine reel for'carrying a'plurality of web rolls showing this invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an end view of thesame; i Fig. 31s a verticalcentral sectional view of the' spindlechucksupporting device on one of the spiders; U V
Fig. 4 is a similar view of the corresponding spindle chuck supporting device onthe opposite 7 spider, and, r Figs. 5 and dare details'o'n enlarged scale; I
This invention is shown as applied toa web splicing device which speeds up the fresh roll by a drive through the central axis thereof.
The machine embodies a frame Ill carrying a motor II which, through suitable speed reducing gearing l2, drives the main shaft l3 of the reel. The shaft carries secured thereto two bearings ll which are rotatably mounted in corresponding brackets IS on the two ends of the frame, which in itself constitutes the sub-structureof the press.
On the shaft l3 are mounted two spiders l6 fixed in angular relation to the shaft butadapted iii to be moved longitudinally of the shaft to provide for rolls of different widths. The shifting of the spiders I6 individually or together is ac-. complished by means of a motor", which is mounted on one of the bearings H for the shaft. This motor issupplied with electrical power by well known means, not illustrated, to rotate the armature of the motor and transmit power from a pinion I8 on the motor shaft to a gear IS on a threaded member or shaft 20, the threads of which mesh with two worm wheels 2|. These worm wheels are rotatably mounted on short shafts 22 and adapted to be connected thereto by a clutch 23 in each case., The shafts 22 are rotatably carried in the two spiders and have pinions 24 secured thereto; These pinions, in both cases, mesh with a rack 25 whichextends across the machine and is embedded in the shaft 13.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a rotatablemagmucus, 1e31, 4 g r a 4 (c1. 242 s8)..;;
, pr ipal. objects of this invention are to 7 an obvious' manner these Ili and' the rack 25 serve to'walk the spiders longitudinally along the shaftl3 when power is applied to the shafts 22, bythe connection o'f the clutches;
Suitable handles 26 are provided with-eccentric projections 21 forshifting the clutches 23: The motor [1 therefore can to rotate the threaded member 20 and: by the engagement."- of either or both clutches 23, eitherspide'r oriboth 2 maybe moved longitudinally to providefor mils applied; .that type of splicingdevic' m which the power for rotating the fresh w'eb roll S may be applied through a spindle shaft 29 arranged of 'difie'rent widths or to place them indifferent locations for purposes tobe understood"readily. As stated, theinventionis shown herein i to drive the-fresh roll through its center orn for braking n emergency stops. Thisshaft 2910- tates with the -reel an'd extends through or into the center of the spindle chuck 31 mounted on i the left-hand spider, as" shown. This ispindle shaft is carried in a-ball-.bearing'30. The spindle I 29 is held longitudinally by the securing of the ball bearing in the spider by a" seal'ring' 3| and a stop on the-other endof the shaft 29 not shownf An overhanging portion of the seal 3| acts as a locating member for-an adjusting hand wheel'32by the use ofa ring 33 secured thereto.
The threaded interior of the adjusting wheel 32 cooperateswith athreaded sleeve 34 which,
through a retainer 35, is secured to the outer race 1 of a ball bearing 36. Thus any rotation of' the adjusting wheel 32 causes the sleeve 34 to move to the right or left as viewedin Fig.3. movement will move the ball bearing f36 and spindle chuck 31 in a like manner since the in-:
side race of the ball bearing, 36 isgsecur'ed by a retainer 38 to the spindle chuck 31. Thespindle chuck 31 is splined to the spindle shaft 29 and is provided with a key 39 which may be used to cooperate with a keyway in the inside of the core 0f the paper roll S. The sleeve 34 has a milled 'out portion 40 accommodating a projection ll extending from the seal plate-3l and thereby secures the sleeve 34- against any rotation due to friction in the ballbearing 36 or to rotation of the adjusting wheel 32. V
Fig. 4 shows a latching spindle at thehother end of the reel where it is not necessary to provide a splined chuck carrying a key. A cylinder I 42 is mounted in an arm of the spider and permitted certain longitudinal motion by a pilot screw 43. Inside the cylinder 42 is mounted a plunger 44 which is also permitted a limited cliuckinan a shaft extend means connected with saidjhand wheel tot time T dering it rotayable butnct mqyableiongitudingll'y a threaded slee've inside-'thewli'eel and inthread 3. ma aide meciianimijor c web theccmbinatlon of a spindle chuck for cup- 1 indi chuck, e beai'ing p'fiatithendoithebearin: secured-inposition, a hand' wheel having 1 behlndflie 'aeal' plgte gr; inside the wheel having.
