Description
Sept. 28, 1937. 1 J, CARR 2,094,291
MINING MACHINE PICK SHARPENING DIE Y Filed Aug. 3, 1955 l LI A'IIURNEY Patented Sept. 28, 1937 UNiTED sra'rgs PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to pick sharpening dies, and more especiallyl to dies for use in hammer or the likemachines for undercut picks employed in coal mining machinery.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of dies of this character, wherein in the use of the same in a hammer machine or the like the undercut pick can be readily shaped and sharpened without requiring hand work thereon.
Another object of the invention is the provision of dies of this character wherein a striking member cooperates with an anvil so that picks employed in coal mining machines and particularly those known as undercut picks can be expeditiously sharpened automatically, thus relieving hand work thereon.
A further object of the invention is the provision of dies of this character which are simple in construction, readily and easily applied to a hammer or the like machine, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in operation, assuring rapid sharpening and resharpening of under cut picks, strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the features of construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the companion member, namely the die and anvil constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the undercut pick.
Figure 5 is a side view thereof.
Figure 6 is an end view of the same.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the anvil.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally a striking block which includes a body having flat opposite walls l0, top Il and a fiattened bottom l2, respectively, the said bottom being formed with the curved or rounded edges I3 and I4, respectively for the convenient reversal of the block when in use. This block A is provided with the sockets l 5 which are outwardly inclined slightly so that the body of said block can be separably fastened or anchored in the striker head of a hammer machine not shown.
Cooperative with this block A is an anvil B, which is in the form of a block like body I6 having a flared lower base portion Il vand in the top flat face i8 of this body is a substantially V shaped cavity I9, one angular area of which has the forwardly convergent sides 20 so as to give a reverse bevel 2| to the cutting tip 22 of an undercutting pick 23, while the angular area of this cavity l 9 effects the proper angularity to the said tip with relation to the shank 24 of such pick 23 is countersunk in this cavity as is shown in Figures. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing and on the striking of the block A against the upper edge of said pick.
In shaping the pick the striking block A delivers a striking blow to the pick when seated in the cavity I9 and the latter sharpens its tip 22 giving the reverse bevel as at 2l to opposite sides of such pick and at the same time producing the required angularity to the cutting point 25 of such tip. In this manner the pick 23 is sharpened automatically without the necessity of any hand work thereon.
The finished pick 23 is shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing and is sharpened and shaped for use.
What is claimed is:-
In dies for mining machine pick sharpening, wherein a pick has a shank and a reversely beveled, faced tip extending at an angle thereto, the combination of a striking block having a at work engaging face provided with opposed rounded corner ends, each end matching the angle formed between the shank and tip of said pick, and an anvil having a flat face provided with a substantially V-shaped cavity adapted to receive and shape the tip of said pick and formed with reversely beveled sides converging in one direction for substantially one-half of the extent of said cavity and arranged at the same angle as the opposed beveled faces of the tip for the pointing and sharpening of the said tip on impact from the striking block upon the pick.
