DEVICE FOR IMPARTING ROTARY MOTION TO TOYS AND THE LIKE Filed Jul 16, 1936 a M We BY g 2 E d A TTORNEYS.
Z-YD VIOE FOR MPARTING-. ROTABY. morioiv 1; TO TOY A THE IK .1
Alberto. Pisacano, Yonkers, N
. fI'he invention, relates to. devices by. meansof wlt ichv rolling-,Qspinning .or soaring toys may be rotated andfrom which the toys ,may be released a .-to roll, spin, or soar by themselves.
n It has for its main object to provide a device which can be used with various kinds of toys and from whichthe release is positively and practically instantaneously effected without slowing down the speed which has been imparted to the toy. Another object is to provide a, device which R; is easy to manipulate.
A further object is to provide a device which can be manufactured and sold ata comparatively low cost and. which i will be neat and attractive in appearance. I
These and various other objects and advantages will be readily. understood from the following description and from the accompanying drawing of preferred embodiments of the invention, in which, however, modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the appended claims. In the drawing Fig. 1 shows the device appliedto a ball or other spherical object,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the ball released,
Fig. 3 is an end View of oneof the clamping members used in the device,
Fig. 4 is an end view of theother clamping member,
Fig. 5 is a fragmental view of the clamping members showing the release mechanism in detail,
Fig. 6 is a cross-sectional side view of a modified device,
Fig. 7 is an end view of one of the clamping members shown in Fig. 6, and
Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional side view of a spinning toy which may be used with the device.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, in the present instance a ball it is shown to illustrate the use of the device. The device itself consists of two semi pherical clamping members H and I2 to which looped cords l3 and M are secured. While the looped cords may be secured to the clamping members in any suitable manner, I prefer to form cup-shaped protrusions I5 with central openings it on the clamping members and to thread the ends of the cord through these openings and then secure the cords by tying knots on their ends. This construction is plainly shown in Fig. 6. A plurality of arms H are formed integrally with the clamping member H ItaiS. a further improvement on my co-pending applicatiomser-ial-No;746,126, filed September 29,
and open ings l8 near their outer ends. Similarlya pluralityof arms I9 are formed imparted to the ball, in the mariner well known to the art. When the required speed has been obtained, an additional pull on the cord will cause the latches 2% to disengage from the openings i8 and thus release the ball, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When released, the ball will fall to the floor and roll along with great speed.
Referring now to Figs. 6 and '7. In this instance the clamping members 2! and 22 are cup-shaped with fiat end plates. The looped cords 23 and 24 are secured in the manner just describedand the clamping and releasing mechanism each consists of an arm 25, having an opening 26, and an arm 27, having a latch'ZB. In this embodiment 3 Y discs 29, 3G and M are shown. They are clamped between the side members, as in the device previously described, but to assure thatthey are rigidly clamped in the device, I prefer to insert discs 32 of resilient material such as felt or the like. This device is operated similarly to the one just described and when the side members are pulled apart the three discs will fall to the floor and roll along with great speed. If the discs are made either slightly different in weight or slightly different in diameter, they will roll along at different speeds and thus provide a very interesting game.
While I have shown and described the device as being twirle'd while held in a horizontal position, it is evident that the device may also be used with spinning toys, such for example, as the top shown in Fig. 8. In that case thebody member 33 of the top is clamped between the side members, while the spindle 35 extends through openings 35 formed in these members. The device is twirled in a vertical position and, when the clamping members are released, the top will land and rotate on the end of its spindle. Holes 35 are likewise provided in the clamping members ii and E2, of the device first described, so that a top may likewise be used with this embodiment.
It is evident that a great many diiferent kinds of spinning, rolling or other toys may be used with this device and for this reason it is not the intention to limit the device to any particular kind of top or toy but to employ it with any device to which it may be found adaptable. It will also be seen that the clamping members might be made in various other shapes than those described and illustrated, and that a great many other types of clamping and releasing. mecha nismsmight be employed. It will therefore be understood that nothing in the drawing or specification is meant to limit the device from the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention and its objects,
, what I claim is new and wish to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the class described comprising, a pair of cupped side plates adapted to enclose a toy; a looped cord secured to one side of each of said side plates; and means, formed'integrally with the side plates and on their peripheries, for clamping said side plates around the toy; said clamping means being separable by a pull on the looped cords.
2. A device. of the class described comprising a pair of cupped side plates adapted to enclose a plurality of discs; a looped cord secured to one side of each of said side plates; and means, formed integrally with the said plates and on their peripheries, for clamping said side plates around the discs; said clamping means being separable by a pull on the looped cords.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pair of cupped side plates adapted to enclose a top; concentric openings formed in said side plates through which the spindle of the top projects; a looped cord secured to one side of said side plates; and means, formed integrally with the side plates and on their peripheries, for clamping said side plates around the top; said clamping means being separable by a pull on the looped cords.
4. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of semi-spherical side members adapted to enclose a spherical toy; a looped cord secured toone side of each of said side members; and means, formed integrally with the side members and on their peripheries, for clamping said side members around the spherical toy; said clamping means being separable by a pull on the looped cords.
