COVER FOR BOOKS LEDGERS, AND SIMILAR ARTICLES Filed Aug. 9, 1953 1! R I \4\s y- V {w 4;!
W r m M r y 6 2 {32 Inventor Anna. A/p/mnsine FORT/ER Patented Sept. 7, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Anna Alphonsine Fortier, Paris, France Application August 9,
1 Claim.
The object of my invention is to provide protecting covers for books, ledgers and similar articles.
The fact that the covers are wholly or partly made of rubber, or a composition of rubber, give the books, ledgers, note-books and similar ar ticles provided with these covers many advantages, the chief of which are the following:
(a) When the cover consists of a single sheet of rubber or of a composition of rubber, the shaping of the back and the fixation of the boards to said back, which operations are necessary in ordinary book binding, are completely done away with, involving a considerable simplification in manufacture, and consequently a substantial reduction of the cost;
(17) The covers made of rubber, or a composition of rubber are washable and therefore very hygienic. This advantage is particularly important concerning books or note-books for children.
(0) These covers can be decorated in any suitable way, in hollow, in relief, by the composition of the matter itself; these decorations can be obtained for instance by moulding, gauffering,
printing, gilding, painting, etc.
t is known for instance that white or very light coloured bindings are rarely used, although they are very convenient in some cases, because these bindings are quickly soiled. The improvements according to my invention make it possible to utilize bindings of this colour owing to the facility with which rubber covers can be cleaned.
Preferred embodiments of my invention will be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawing given merely by way of example, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the inner side of a cover according to the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding profile view;
Fig. 3 is also a profile view showing the leaves of a book assembled and ready to be fixed to the cover;
Fig. 4 is a partial cross sectional view on an enlarged scale of the covers shown in Fig. 2.
In all the covers shown in the drawing, I and I designate the boards of the cover, and 2 its back. As shown by Figs. 1 and 2 these three parts are made in a single piece of a composition of matter consisting chiefly of rubber. Each board is divided between the edge of the back and a line :r-.r into two portions, an outer one 3 which is directly connected to back 2 and another one 4 which forms an inner flap.
1933, Serial No. 684,451
The boards I and l are sufficiently thick for being relatively stiff. The back 2 consists of a band of reduced thickness so as to be more flexible.
The fixation of the leaves of a book as shown in profile in Fig. 3 is performed in the following manner:
These leaves have been secured in a known manner, for instance by sewing or gluing, to a sheet T extending on either side thereof so as to form two small flaps V. The portion T of this sheet is fixed, by glue for instance, to the back 2 of the cover, while the two flaps V are themselves glued between portions 3 and flaps 4 of the two boards of the cover. Sheet T and its flaps V are preferably made of fabric; said fabric may be rubberized and in this case it may be fixed to the cover by means of a suitable adhesive thus giving the whole a very great strength.
Fig. 4 is a partial cross section on an enlarged scale of the embodiment shown in Fig. 2. A lining H of a suitable material, fabric or paper for instance, is applied on the inner face of said back and the two edges l2 of said lining are applied against the inner faces of flaps l0. 5
While I have described what I deem to be practical and efiicient embodiments of my invention, it should be well understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be changes made in the arrangement, disposition and form 30 of the parts without departing from the principle of my invention as comprehended within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A permanent protective cover for books, ledgers and similar articles, which comprises in combination, a single sheet of a composition of rubber sufficiently thick for being relatively stiff, said sheet being provided in its intermediate part with a band of reduced thickness so as to be more flexible, which band forms the back of the cover, the portions of said sheet on either side of said band forming the boards of the cover, flaps integral with said boards and extending on the inner side thereof along the portions thereof adjacent to the back, said flaps being turned toward each other and adapted to serve to the fixation of the leaves of the book to the cover, and a band of cloth applied against the inner side of the back and the inner sides of the flaps the total thickness of each flap and the portion of the board over which it extends being equal to the thickness of the remainder of said board.
