(01. 24-201) This invention relates to slide closures for the openings of bags, pocket books, pouches and the like articles and particularly. to that type of such closures wherein marginal beads are provided around the opening. The separable beads in such closures are engaged by a plurality of metallic closure members which slide to a limited extent on the bead and which are connected by a flexible element. In slide closures of the type above mentioned which have previously been provided, the bead on one edge of the opening is arranged below the opposed bead on the other edge of the opening. The metallic members previously provided fail to press the beads together firmly enough to maintain the closure in its proper closed position, and also necessitates the manual arrangement of the beads, one below the other, to permit the members to slide properly.
The previously known closures ofthis type further necessitate the arrangement of the connecting flexible element in a position wherein said connecting element is visible and is exposed on the outside of the article, whereby the element is likely to catch on extraneous articles and become damaged or broken or may cause the closure to open accidentally.
My invention contemplates the provision of a series of slide members of such shape as to adequately engage the beads of the closure without danger of loosening or falling of! the beads, and
to carry said beads into their proper relative positions and in firm contact with each other.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a slide closure member to which the flexible element may be connected in such a manner that it is concealed inside of the article atall times.
My invention further contemplates the provision of a closure wherein the beads are arranged in coplanar relation at the ends thereof but are brought by the slide closure members automatically into the position wherein one of the beads underlies the other when the slide members are moved into their closing positions.
The various objects of my invention will be clear from the description which follows. and from the drawing, in which,

In the practical embodiment of my invention 5 ticle l0, regardless of its form or the purpose for which it is used, is provided with an opening II to which my improved closure, is applied. The opposed edges i2 and I3 of the opening are each reinforced with a suitable reinforcing bead, as

The article in is preferably made of flexible material, suitably lined if desired, and of any well known type such as fabric, rubber, leather, imitation leather and other materials commonly used for that purpose. The marginal portion of the outer material of the article id, as well as the lining if desired, is carried around the beads l4 and ii to cover said beads place as by means of m the respective stitching i6,
article, the end edge portions of the material are stitched together as by means of the stitching while the article is turned inside out, whereafter the article is turned right side out. The infolded parts adjacent the stitching 2B are 3% concealed in the interior of the articleiand the bead ends 2| and 22 are arranged at the same level or in coplanar relation. Similarly, it will be understood that at the side edge i8, where the fold in the bead is positioned, the beads are also arranged at the same level.
However, the slide members 23, a number of which are provided, are so constructed and shaped as to automatically position the remaining parts of the bead i5 except the extreme ends 4w thereof, below the bead I I, as is shown for example, in Figsrl, 2, and 3.
The slide member 23 is made preferably of a single piece ofv sheet metal of uniform width, T being so shaped as to substantially encompass both oi the beads. One end portion as 24 of the greater than 270 but less than 360. From the portion 28' integrally extends downwardly the projecting portion 21, which is also in partly cylindrical form, conforming to the shape of the head I! and terminating in a fold or bend 28. The material 29 of the slide member past the fold 28 is bent back on the portion 21 and around the bead l5 to a point adjacent the fold or bend 28, and is arranged below and slightly to one side of the portion 26 to provide two thicknesses of material. The other end 30 of the slide member may be finished in any suitable manner, preferably to form a rounded edge thereon and may be if desired, though not necessarily, bent back on itseli', and is about at the same height as the lower end of the part 24. It will be understood that the extending portions 24 and 21 are slightly separated from each I other by an amount substantially equal to the thickness of the rear wall 25 of the article and that similarly, the portion 30 and the fold 28 are spaced apart a 'minimum distance substantially equal to the thickness of the front wall of the article, whereby the cylindrical bends 28 and 29 substantially enclose or encompassthe respective beads I4 and I5. It will also be understood that the slide member 23 is made of sufllciently still or springy material to permit the manufacture of said slide members with comparatively large openings between the portions 24 and 21, and between the fold 28 30 and the portion 30, for the insertion of the respective beads through said openings and to permit the clamping of said parts about the beads into the positions shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the material being of sumcient stiflness to maintain the clips in their thus bent positions about the beads after they have been assembled on said beads.
It will further be seen that the slide members 23 are adapted to slide on the beads and that, during such sliding movement, the bead I5 is maintained below the bead ll to form an adequate tight closure between said beads.
As shown in Fig. 1, one of the slide members such as the outermost slide member 3! may be fixed to the beads against sliding movement by bending and clamping the parts 24 and 21 as closely together as possible to slightly distort the bead I4 and thereby to fix the member against movement thereon. Similarly, the parts 28 and 30 may be squeezed together to a suiiicient extent to slightly distort the bead l5 and to prevent movement of the member 8| thereon.
The remaining members 23 are movably con nected to. each other by means of a suitable flexible element 32. Said element may take a 5 variety of forms such as that of a chain, tape or the like. The element 32 as shown in Fig. 2
may be fixed to each of the slide members 28 asoy means of the bend 35. when, however, it is' desired to conceal .the element 32,- said member 60 is arranged in the interior of the article It. Part of the material of the portion 21 between the side edges thereof may be struck out to form abent lug 33 providing an opening 34 through which the flexible element 32 is passed, said lug 5 33 being then bent or clamped about the flexible element to hold it securely in place.
It will be seen that by means of my improved closure, the beads l4 and I5 may be secured w the material of the article III in coplanar relation 70 at the edges of the opening II, that the slide members 23 are adequately secured to the beads and serve to arrange the beads one below the other automatically and without any necessity for the prearrangement thereof by the user, and that 75 the beads at the side edge I! of the article may wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto 10 but intend to claim my invention as broadly as may be permitted by the state of the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
'1. A slide member for a closure, comprising a 15 single'piece of sheet material having a cylindrical bend near one end part thereof, an extension projecting from each end of said bend, each of said extensions being outwardly concave, and a second cylindrical bend in the other end portion, 20 said second bend being in overlapping engagement with one of said extensions.
2. A slide closure member, of a single piece of sheet material, having a pair of adjacent overlapping and contacting cylindrical bends there- 2 in, one of said-bends being lower than the other.
3. A slide closure member, of a single piece of material, having a pair of adjacent incompletely cylindrical bends therein, one of said bends having an extension conforming to the 30 shape of and adjacent to and in contact with a part of the other bend.
4. A slide closure member having a partly cylindrical doubled portion of two contacting thicknesses of material, a partly cylindrical bend ex- 35 tending from one end of the doubled portion, and a second partly cylindrical bend extending from the other end or the doubled portion.
5. In a slide closure member, a pair of cylindrical bends, one below and at one side of the 40 other, and a portion integrally connecting said bends and bent on to one of said bends to provide two thicknesses oi material at a part of said member intermediate its ends.
6. In a slide closure member, a pair of cy- 45 lindrical interengaging bends each adapted to substantially encompass a bead and arranged one below and at one side of the other, and means on said member for securing a flexible element thereto. 50
7. In a slide closure member, a pair of cylindrical bends arranged at different levels and integrally joined to each other and each adapted to substantially encompass a bead, a terminal extension on each of said bends, one of the extensions being longer than the other and means integral with the member for engaging a flexible element and for securing the flexible element to the closure member.
8. In a slide closure member of a single piece oi material, an outwardly concave'terminal portion, a cylindrical bend subtending an angle of less than 360 extending from and integral with the terminal portion, an extension projecting from the bend, a second cylindrical bend subtending an angle of less than 360 integral with the extension and covering -said extension and providing two thicknesses of material at said ex tension and an integral holding member bent from the material of the closure member and adapted to hold a flexible element.
9. A slide closure member of a single length of material folded on itself at a portion intermedi ate its ends to provide two thicknesses of material, a cylindrical bend subtending an angle said bends, and a member integral with andbent from the material of said closure member for holding a flexible element thereto.
10. In a slide closure iProvided with a pair 01' parallel beads, a plur ty oi. closure members each siidable on the beads and each having a pair of-overlapping contacting cylindrical bends therein encompassing said beads, one oi said bends being lower than the other to automatically arrange said beads one below the other on the movement 01' said members along said beads and to draw said beads together.
11. A slide closure member having a pair of overlapping cylindrical bends therein. one lower than the other, and a bent lug integral with the closure member and extending below the lower of said bendsa suiiicient distance to permit the insertion of a flexible element between the lug and the remainder of the member.
12. a slide closure member folded on itself intermediate its ends to provide two thicknesses oi material, a cylindrical bend extending from one 0t said thicknesses and adapted to encompass a bead, a second cylindrical bend extending from the other of said thicknesses and also adapted to encompass a bead, and means for holding a flexible element to said closure member comprising a bendable lug extending from the material of the outer oi said thicknesses.
