(01. s c-149) This invention relates to .ranges or the-like, and is more particularly directed to broiler drawers for ranges. v
The primary object of the invention is the pro- .5 vision of a broiler drawer having a' hinged front panel and carrying a broiling surface for outward and downward swinging movements, whereby the broiling surface becomes readily accessible when the front panel is moved about its hinged side.
Another object 'of the inventionis the provision of simple and sturdy means to mount a broiling surface within a drawer for outward and downward swinging movements, said mounting means being entirely independent of the sides of the drawer.
Other objects and advantages 6: the invention may become apparent as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view of a range equipped with a broiler drawer constructed in accordance with the present invention, the drawer being shown in its open and partly withdrawn position; Fig. 2 is a perspective view,
with parts broken away, of a drawer with the broiling surface in raised position and the front panel closed, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation, with parts broken away, of a drawer with the broiling surface in its lowered position and the front panel swung, open, the parts having been moved from the raised position shown in dotted lines.
Referring to the drawing, the device is shown as an attachment to a range I and is conveniently located in the front surface of the range where it may be slid into and out of the body of the range in the manner of a drawer. The heating elements and drawer guides form no part ofthe present invention and hence are not shown. It is assumed, however, that the heating elements are carried within the body of the range above the drawer, so as to be in position to broil food carried in the drawer in the usual manner.
The drawer comprises a body having a base 2 from which side walls 3 and l and rear wall 5 extend vertically. A front panel, or door 6,'is hinged at its lower transverse edge to the base so as to swing outwardly and downwardly to lie substantially in the plane of the base when in its open position, as shown in Fig. 3.
A broiling surface such as a rack or pan III is disposed within the drawer and is adapted to carry food in the usual manner. In the form shown, the pan I0 is freely slidable into and out of spaced, parallel guide racks H which sup- 5 port the side edges of the pan III in any of a plurality of elevated positions, so as to accommodate food at various distances from the heating elements. The guide racks I! are supported adjacent their front and rear ends by legs i8 and- I8, respectively, the legs being pivotally connected to 5 the racks in each instance. The lateral distance between the racks i2 is less than the width of the drawer, so that the legs l6 and I8 are spaced. from the drawer side walls 3 and 4 for a purpose which will presently become apparent. At their 10 lower ends, thelegs l6 and are pivotally connected to upstanding cars 20 carried by the drawer base 2, inwardly from the sides thereof.

adjacent the front and rear ends of the latter and serve to connect the assemblies at each side of the drawer to maintain them in parallel spaced relation and to add rigidity to the entire structure.
Actuating links or arms 24 extend into the drawer and, at their front ends, are pivotally connected to ears 26 carried at each side of the hinged front panel 6 between the upper and lower edges thereof. The links 24 extend along the side walls of the drawer, parallel to the base, to a point near 25 their rear ends where they are bent upwardly and inwardly to connect in a pivoted joint to the pan carrying racks It. It will be seen that the inward bend of the actuating links adds to the lateral stiffness of the structure since it brings at 30 least one portion of the link more nearly at right angles to the plane of the side plates in position to receive a thrust forcein the event of a tendency to displace the supporting.- structure sidewise oi' the drawer. 9
In operation, the device stands normally in the closed position shown in Fig. 2, with the front panel. or door closed and the legs l6 and I8 vertically disposed with respect to the drawer base 2. When the front panel is moved about its hinged 40 edge to lie in the position shown in Fig. 3, the actuating'llnks 24 pull the'racksi! forwardly so that the legs l6 and I8 swing about their pivoted connections with theears'20, and the broiler pan is lowered away from the heating 45 elements. In this position the actuating links 24 lie on the base of the drawer and serve to support the apparatus rigidly in extended position. Food may then be placed on the pan which is now readily accessible since its front edge ex- 50 tends beyond the front surface of the range. When the front panel 6 is again closed, the food is moved up to broiling position. If it is desired to inspect thefood, or to turn it to expose an uncooked side to the heat, the front panel 6 "is again swung down and the drawer partly withdrawn to expose substantially the entire pan.
It will be seen that the present invention'materially reduces the extent of withdrawing movement necessary to render the food accessible.
Since the pan carrying racks l2 and the supporting structure are spaced from the sides 3 and 4 of the drawer, the latter may be readily cleansed of grease and other food deposits. Access to the entire drawer is simplified by reason of the disposition of the parts entirely on the base 2 of the drawer.
While the invention has been described in connection with a specific apparatus, it should be expressly understood that numerous changes may be made in the form and disposition of the parts without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to' secure by United States Letters Patent, is:

2. In a device of the type set forth, a drawer having a base, a front panel hinged'to the base for outward and downward swinging movements, spaced, parallel, racks normally disposed within the drawer, front and rear, legs pivotally connected to the base and racks, transversely disposed members connecting the racks, food supporting means removably engaged at its sides with the racks, and links pivoted at their forward ends to the front panel and having their rear ends pivoted to the rear end portions of the racks, the links being formed to move said food supporting means to its forward position and to seat on the base of the drawer when the panel is opened thereby to support the latter in substantially horizontal position.
3. In a device or the type set forth, a drawer having a base, a front panel hinged to the base for outward and downward swinging movements, a food holder, means to removably support the food holder, means whereby said supporting means is mounted for vertical swinging movement so as to dispose its front end into and out of the'drawer, and means connected to the panel and to the support to move the food holder to its forward position and having a part to seat upon'the base of the drawer and thereby sustain the panel in substantially horizontal position upon movement of the panel to open position.
