Description

July 6, 1937. w. F. PUNTE SLIP COVER CONTAINER Filed Sept. 21, 1934 gwwmdm:
William EBanZ'e,
Patented July 6, 1937 UNITED, STATES PATENT FFECE SLIP COVER CQNTAINER Application September 21, 1934, Serial No. 744,998
' 1 Claim. (o1. 220-60) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in metal containers, and more particularly to a metal container having a slip closure therefor.
An object of the invention is to provide a container wherein the cover is secured thereto by the snapping of the flange over holding projections on the body wall of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the body wall and the cover are so constructed as to provide an extended sealing contact therebetween.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed. 7
Referring to the drawing- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section of a container embodying the improvements;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in plan and partly in section of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken in plan on the line t-A of Fig. 3.
The improved container comprises a body portion which is preferably cylindrical. A bottom end is seamed thereto in the usual manner. The upper end of the body portion is closed by an outside slip cover which is held in sealing engagement with said body portion by spaced gripping projections frictionally contacting with an annular recess in the flange of the friction cover. The body wall is rolled or curled inwardly at its upper end to provide a closed strengthening bead, that the open end of the container.
1 and the flange is provided with an offset portion which is of greater diameter than a circle tangential to the outside face of the projections. The lower edge of the flange is left straight and is inset to a diameter less than the tangential diameter of the outer face of the projections, so that when the cover is forced on, the lower inset portion of the flange will flex and deform to allow this portion of the cover flange to pass by and snap under the projections in the body wall for holding the cover in form gripping contact with the container body. The cover is also provided with an annular recess directly over the body wall which forms a recess on its inner face dimensioned so as to fit the bead on the body portion and thus forming an extended seal. The inset portion of the flange which forms an annular recess for the locking projections is at a distance from the top of the cover sufflcient to draw the annular recess in the top of the cover tightly down upon the bead on the upper end of the body thus forming a tight seal.
Referring to the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the improved container 5 consists of a body portion 6 to which a bottom end 5a is secured. The body portion at its upper end is left open and is closed by a slip cover 1. The body Wall at its upper end is curled inwardly so as to form a closed hollow bead 8 and at a short distance below, the body wall is provided with an outwardly curved bead 3a. These beads strengthen the open end of the body portion and form a substantiallyrigid non-flexing portion. The cover 7 has an annular bead 9 directly over the body wall which forms a recess on its inner face dimensioned so as to flt the bead on the body portion and thus form an extended seal between the cover and the container.
Spaced from the closed bead and on the exterior of the body portion are Widely spaced projections Ii]. The cover is provided with a depending flange ll having an offset knurled portion i2 and an inset portion i3 which forms a recess M in the cover flange and provides a retaining shoulder I 5 which is adapted to snap over the projections i E] on the body portion for holding the cover in sealing contact with the container body.
The lower edge of the inset portion 13 of the cover is left perfectly straight so that the flexing is all in the flange of the cover, the wall of the container being non-flexible due to the beads 3 and Set at the upper edge thereof. The can body does not distort when one projection at a time or when all projections at the same time pass by the retaining shoulder and enter the recess in the cover flange. The only thing that distorts and takes a non-circular shape is the lower edge of the cover flange. Thus it is that when the flange flexes to allow the projections on the body Wall to enter the recess in the cover flange, there is a tendency to draw the cover down tightly on its closure seat.
It will be noted in the drawing that the lower edge portion i3 of the cover flange is of slightly greater diameter than the can body. This will compensate for slight variations of size of the cover in manufacture.
Owing to the firm holding grip of the projections and the extended seal between the cover and the container bead, a container is produced which may be readily opened and closed, and when closed it is practically airtight. This makes a container that is of especial value for ground coffee, which is constantly evolving a gas carrying off the volatile constituents giving flavor and aroma to the cofiee. With applicants tight cover this loss of cofiee gas is reduced and de-- terioration prevented.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metal container comprising a body portion having an inwardly curled closed hollow bead at the upper edge thereof, the wall of said body portion having an outwardly projecting bead adjacent but spaced from the closed bead at the upper edge, said body wall between said beads having spaced projections on the exterior thereof, a cover for said body portion having an annular recess disposed above said hollow bead and conforming in cross section thereto so as to make an extended sealing contact therewith, said cover having a depending flange closely fitting the outer face of the body wall in the region of the head at the upper end thereof provided with an outwardly offset knurled portion, said ofiset p01- tion being spaced above the lower edge of the flan e and dimensioned so as to form a retain 7
