R. 11., a corporation of Delaware Application February 3, 1936, Serial No. 62,071
16 Claims.
In high speed web perfecting rotary printing presses where quick drying inks and ink dryin units are employed in connection with the web printing units, it is most important that the several units be so located with respect to one another as to produce the best possible results with a minimum amount of space and a minimum travel ofthe web.
This invention comprises, generally, two printing units and one or two drying units and means for passing the web through said printing and drying units.
This invention more specifically comprises two printing units arranged one above the other and two drying units, one offset from and located at right angles to one of the printing units and the other being located in line with the press beyond Practical embodiments of my invention are represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Fig. 1 represents a diagrammatic top plan view of a double two color press embodying my invention, the means for removing the vapors rising from the heating cylinders of the drying units being omitted;
Fig. 2 represents a view of the press; and
Fig. 3 represents a diagrammatic longitudinal vertical section, taken in the plane of the line IIL-III of'Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
The first printingunit is herein shown as adapted to print in two colors, the impression *cylinder being by 2, 3 and their inking mechanisms by 5, 5.
The second printing unit for perfecting the web is located above the first printing unit and it is herein shown as adapted for printing in two. colors. the impression cylinder being denoted by 6, the form cylinders by I, .8 and their inking mechanisms by 9, Ill.
The first drying unit is herein shown as comprising a large heating cylinder II and two small cooling cylinders l2, l3. A pipe l4 serves to introduce a heating medium, as steam, into the cylinder l I; and pipes l5, l6 serve to introduce a cooling medium, as water, into the cylinders l2, l3 respectively. This drying unit is offset from and located at right angles to the press.
The second drying unit is herein shown as comprising a large heating cylinder I1 and two small diagrammatic front end cooling cylinders l8, IS. A pipe 20 serves to introduce a' heating medium, as steam, into the cylinder i1; and pipes ii, 22 serve to introduce a cooling medium, as water, into the cylinders l3, l9 respectively. This drying unit is located in line with the press sufli'ciently beyond the second printing unit to eliminate the deleterious effect of the heat from the heating cylinder ll denoted by l, the form cylinders on the inking mechanism ill of the form cylinder 8 of the second printing unit.
A turning bar 23 is provided in position to direct the web laterally from the first printing unit to the first or ofiset drying unit, and a second turning bar 2i is located in position to lead the web back into alinement with the press before the web is passedto the second or perfecting printing unit.
The web may lows:
The unprinted web passes from the web supply roll 25 around guide rolls 23, 21, 28, 29 to and around the impression cylinder i of the first printing unit. From thence the web passes around the turning bar 23 and guide roll til to and around the heating cylinder ii of the first drying unit. From thence the web passes around the'cooling cylinder l2, guide roll 3i cooling cylinder l3 and guide rolls 32, 33, 3d, 3%" to the turning bar 24 for bringing the web back into line with the press.
The web then passes around the guide roll 35 and in engagement withlthe compensating roll 36 to and around the impression cylinder 6 of the second or perfecting printing unit located over the impression cylinder l of the first printing unit. The web then passes over guide rolls 31,38 to and around the heating cylinder ii of the second drying unit located in line with the press beyond the second printing unit. The web then passes around the coolingcylinder i8, guide roll 39, cooling cylinder l9 and guide rolls W, M, 2 downwardly to a predetermined point for further ope gations, as cutting, folding, stacking, etc.
The heating cylinders of the two drying units may be provided with suitable means for removing the vapors which arise from the inks as the web passes around said heating cylinders. In the present instance I have shown blowers 43, Mi with their hoods 45, 46 partially enclosing the heating cylinders II, I! respectively, and the exhaust pipes 41, 48.
It will be understood that the printing units may be driven by well known or approved means, not shown herein, and that the path of the web may be varied to suit different requirements.
- It will also be seen that the path of the web is such that the freshly printed side of the web,
be led through the press as folafter it is dried by each drying unit, will not r sorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not intend to be limited to the particular embodiments herein shown and described, but
