(01. 238--338) My invention relates to improvements in railway tie plates and railway rail clips to hold railway rails on railway tie plates wherein the combination of a tie plate and rail clip assemblies is the plate serves all rails having bases not wider or narrower than the widest and the narrowest bases for which the plate is designed; the rail clip assemblies serve the particular rails for which they are designed; only the plate is anchored directly to the tie; the clip assemblies anchor themselves only to the plate; replacements of rails by other rails of other sizes are served by change of dimension in the rail clip assemblies only; there is no replacement of plate when a rail thereon is replaced by another rail of different size; there is permanent attachment of the plate to the tie throughout the service life of the tie; and the use of the railway track spike for holding the rail on the plate is eliminated. The foregoing improvements are attained by combinations of a tie plate and rail 'clip tassemblies, such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, one form of such combination being shown by Figures 1 to 10 inclusive. The plate, the clip assemblies and combinations thereof are not limited to the forms or number of parts thereof shown on said drawing or to the descriptions thereof. herein given. Such details are modifiable means for attainment of said improvements, and modifications thereof are comprehended within the conception and spirit of this invention. The plate and clip assemblies are formed of any suitable metal to any desirable dimensions.

.In Figures 1 to 10 inclusive, I is the plate; 2 shows holes in the plate for fastening the plate tothe tie; 3 is the clip bolt; 4 is the clip block; 5 is the clip bolt nut; :c is the filler block for the left hand clip assembly; 111 is the filler block for the right hand clip assembly; and 6 shows the slots .in the plate to hold the clip assemblies. In Fig. 2, the position of the base of the rail on the plate is indicated by the dotted lines I. In 'Fig. 4, the distance 8 between the slots' in the plate, the length 9 of the left hand slot, and the length I0 of the right hand slot are determined by the narrowest and the widest rail bases for which the plate is designed, and by the longituclip assemblies, the disdinal dimensions of the tance 8 also including desired tolerances between the edges of the rail base and the faces of the "clip blocks 4.
.In Fig. 3, it will be observed that the slots in the plate are flared outwardly at the bottom transverselyof the plate, the longitudinal view of the slots being shown in Fig. 4. Thus the slots, being wider at bottom than at top, afford an- =chorage for the correspondingly flared head of the clip bolt 3 shown in Figures 2, 3, 5 and 6. The sectionalview of this bolt in Fig. 3 is taken at 90 degrees from the sectional view thereof in Fig. 2, from which it is seen that the head of the bolt is flared in one direction only. This permits the bolt to be inserted downward into the slot by turning the bolt 90 degrees from its final position in the slot shown in Fig. 3. So inserted and then turned to its said final position, the
bolt, with its nut 5, becomes the anchor holding the entire clip assembly in the slot. In Fig. 2, assembled in the slots in the order 3-.r or y-4--5, the clip bolt 3 going next, the clip block 4 next and the clip bolt nut 5 going on last, the
'. assemblies being unmade in the reverse order. :When'the assemblies are complete in the slots as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the filler blocks a: and y are held in place by the flange on the rear and the lug on the bottom of the clip block 4; clip block 4 is held in place by the clip bolt 3 and the clip bolt nut 5; and the clip bolt 3 movement of the rail is stopped by the clip block 4.
In Fig. 2, the width of the rail base 1 is less than the width of the Widest rail base for which the plate is designed. This lesser width is served by appropriate dimensional values of :c and y on the filler block :0 and y of Fig. 2, a: being on the filler block on the inside of the rail base and y being on the filler block outside of the railbase. Each filler block a: or y must have that di mensional value of c: or y required by the width of the particular rail base which-that'particular block must serve. This requires in rail replacements new filler blocks :2 and y'for each change of width of rail base; but no other part of the entire tie plate and rail clip. assemblies combination is affected by change of width of rail base. In Fig. 2, :c and yrepresent the filler blocks and also the longitudinal dimensional values of those blocks. i
Assuming the rail base 1 inFig. 2 is the narrowest base for which the tie plate and rail clip assemblies combination is designed, the dimensional values of a: and y on the filler blocks a: and y are maximum values which decreasewith each increase in width of rail base until they become zero and the filler blOCkSI-L and 1 disappear from the clip assemblies in Fig. 2 when the widest rail base for which the tie plate and rail clip assemblies combination is designed is reached. i
In Fig. 2, the clip bolt 3, the clip block 4 and the clip bolt nut 5 slide in the slot as a unit and move outward as the dimensions w and y of the filler blocks decrease to accommodate wider rail bases until, finally, the filler blocks disappear and the lug on the under side of the clip block 4 abuts against the outer end of the slot in the plate.
The values of a: and y for the widest rail base for which the tie plate and rail clip assemblies combination is designed being zero, values of a: and y for lesser rail bases may be found from the fact that when two rails of the T-pattern, one having wider base and head than the other, are laid end to end with gage line of each head of rail coinciding with gage line of track, the relations of edges of rail bases and values of a: and y can be found as follows:
Let a equal width of wider base.
Let b equal width of narrower base.
Let 0 equal width of wider head.
Let (1 equal width'of narrower head.

The sum of the maximum dimensional values of a: and y equals the difference in width of the the clip blocks moving,
Widest rail base and the narrowest rail base, a: and 1/ being zero for the widest base.
With two tie plates I spaced on and anchored to the tie that distance apart which makes the gage lines of heads of rails having widest bases for which the plates are designed coincide with the gage lines of the track, proper dimensional values for x and 1 make the gage lines of heads of rails having narrower bases also coincide with the gage lines of the track, the positions of the 10 plates on the tie remaining unchanged.
In combinations of a tie plate and rail clip assemblies, such as are hereinbefore illustrated in the drawing and described in the specification, which I claim as new and novel, and which I 15 i desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
I claim:
The combination of a metal tie plate and metal rail clip assemblies wherein the plate and the clip assemblies are so cooperatively designed and combined that the plate, designedsfor a maximum and a minimum width of rail base, serves equally well all widths of rail base within said maximum and minimum widths, and each clip assembly serves, within said Widths, the particular width of rail base for which it is designed, each clip assembly being adjustable to such particular Width by change of only one dimension of only one member of said clip assembly, said plate having two slots therein or such lengths and spacing on the plate transversely of the rail base as are necessary, to accommodate the maximum and the minimum widths of rail base for which the plate is designed, said slots being so designed that they can receive and hold therein the'rail clip assemblies so designed that they can be received and held in the slots ,for which they are designed; and wherein, for the purposesherein described, there are, in a tie plate and rail clip assembly, a slot in said plate to receive and hold. said assembly, said slot, transversely of the plate, being wider at the bottom than at the top, thereby providing wedging surfaces, the rail clip assembly consisting of a clip block, a clip bolt, a clip 45 bolt nut and a filler block, said clip bolt having a wedge-shaped head to fit the slot, said filler block filling the outer section of, the slot, said clip block having a clip bolt hole near its end adjacent to the rail base and a lug extending into 50 the slot and abutting the filler block, said filler block being covered and held in the slot by an under surface of said clipyblock, and said clipbolt nut having a circular flange extending beyond the inner edge of the clip block .and over-5'5 the rail base; and wherein the distance between the inner ends of the clip blocks adjacent to the edges of the rail base is increased or decreased by decreasing or increasing the lengths of the filler blocks to accommodate corresponding in- '60 creases or decreases in the width of the rail base, transversely of the rail base, outward or inward distances equal to and with decreases or increases of lengths of the filler blocks, thereby making the combination of a tie 65 plate and rail clip assemblies herein described universal for all rails not larger or smaller than the largest rail and the smallest rail for which said combination is designed.
