Description
Patented Mar. 16, 1937 UNI-TED STATES PATENT OFFIE ADJUSTABLE WRENCH Edward H. Luckey, Kansas City, Mo. Application October 6, 1936, Serial No. 104,320
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a wrench and more especially to an adjustable open end wrench.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein the same can be manipulated in small spaces and also the wrench may be adjusted with dispatch and in a novel manner.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, wherein on adjustment thereof the same will be maintained in its adjusted position and the adjustment is accomplished with ease and dispatch.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly re liable and effective in its operation, strong, durable, easy of adjustment, enabling minute adjustment, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan View of a V in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a of the wrench.
Figure 3 is an edge elevation of the wrench.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the Wrench.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary vertical longitudinal sectional view through the wrench showing the elements separated under a confined spring therebetween for easy. adjustment.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the wrench comprises a pair of lever elements l0 and II, respectively, these being cut into for a major distance of their length at confronting sides to line and have register a pair of jaws l2, the jaw of either element being located at the outer longitudinal edge thereof and is formed with a spaced serrated working or gripping face I3. The end of each lever element l0 and H carrying the jaw I2 is relatively wide as at M and this widened portion is formed with an arcuate slot l5 transversely disposed therein.
Remote from the wider ends M of the lever elements I0 and II and in the inner faces thereplan view of one of the elements wrench constructed of are cavities it for accommodating and confining a substantially U-shaped wire spring 11,
it having in its tines bights l8 for distorting such tines so as to effect a spreading apart of the elements Ill and II and also that'such tines will swing the said elements I 0 and l I to laterally spread the jaws l2 from each other, the swinging of the elements being on an axis constituted by a pivot bolt l9 passed transversely through the elements next to the ends thereof remote from the enlarged ends M.
Passed through the slots bolt 20 while 2! is the tail this bolt 20. Through the use of the nut carrying bolt 20 the lever elements It and H can be locked or made fast when adjusted relative to each other.
The wider ends Id of the elements It] and II immediately inwardly of the jaws i2 thereon and upon confronting faces have interlocking teeth or ribs 22 so that when the nut carrying bolt 20 fastens the elements l0 and H in adjusted position these teeth or ribs 22 interlock with each other and thus firmly holding the elements adjusted.
It will be apparent from the figures in the drawing that when the bolt 20 is loosened the spring ll, which is trained about the pivot l9 within the cavities It, becomes active for separating the elements l0 and i I and in lateral direction and at right angles thereto so that the jaws l2 will automatically open. By pressing against the elements l0 and H when the bolt 20 is loosened against the resistance of the spring I! the jaws l2 can be brought to the required distance apart according to the work to be operated upon and by tightening the bolt 20 fastened in adjusted position. There is present sufficient clearl5 is a nut carrying nut threaded upon ance at the pivot l 9 whereby the wrench elements l0, and H may separate and'assume a position as shown in Figure'G of the drawing when the bolt 2B is loosened. 7
What is claimed is:
A wrench of the character described comprising levers each having a jaw at one end, a pivot swingingly connecting the levers together, interlocking faces formed on said levers, means for interlocking the faces with each other, and a distorted double arm spring confined between the levers and active thereon in two directions at right angles to each other for the simultaneous opening of the jaws and separating the interlocking faces from each other, said means including a tail nut carrying bolt, the levers at the interlocking faces being slotted for accommodating said bolt.
