PATE-NT u osi-'ica My invention relates to containers and closures therefor, and moreparticularly to containers having separable closures adapted to be fastened thereto by driven fastenings of such character' 5 as to permit of theirreadyremoval without'damage to either the containers or their closures,
Briefly stated, my invention contemplates the provision of containers, especially wooden receptacles; such as kegs, i barrels, etc., having closures, heads or lids fastened thereto by driven fastenings; such as nails, tacks, etc. The driven fastenings are of such construction 4as to provideA puller-engaging means substantially above the surfaces wherein the fastenings are driven, even when such fastenings are buried to their fullest extent therein. This I have accomplished by employing driven fastenings of-the type commonly known as double-headed nails; il e., those nails provided with a driving stop or shoulder dlsposedabout the shank slightly spaced from y the head or upset end portion thereof. The
shank can only beV sunk to the driving stop or i shoulderbleaving the head projecting above the surface of application, whereby it may be readily engaged by` any ordinary puller; such as a clawhammer, or pinch-bar. Thus, withdrawal of such nails may be easily accomplished without damaging the containers or closures to which they/ have been appliedand, in this way, the containers are preserved for re-use. s
It has heretofore been practically impossible to open .receptacles of the classes described above,
particularly kegs and barrels. without breaking portions of the rims and lids, rendering them 5 unfit ici: further use. But of greater significance is the fact that the broken portions of such containers1 offer a considerable danger hazard to the hands, arms and clothes of those who must work `thereabout. This hazard is increased by 40 the breaking ci of the old type fastenings, and the exposure of undrawn fastenings, occasioned l by their resistance to withdrawal, wherebya row of sharp metal points is left disposed inwardly about the inner lip of the receptacle. Obviously 45 such projections are a menace to those persons,
who must reach over and into the barrel -to rermove its contents. e
e In many fields of endeavor the preservationl of the containers during the opening and empty- 50 ing of the contents thereof is not only desirable but necessary in'order that they may be reiilled and restoredto a tightly closed status. Heretofore, this has only been possible after the expenditure of much time and effort, whereby the 55 economiesefrected by the re-utilization of the container are dissipated in the consumption oi' time and labor required to preserve Athe same.
It is among the objects of the present invention to provide, in combination with a container,
a closure therefor having novel l fastening devices of such construction and design as to insure their promptand easy removal without damage to the' container or closure.
Other objects and advantages hereof will be brought out as the description proceeds in the 10 annexed specification, which may be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figurevl represents atop plan view of a keg or barrel, showing one application of my invenl5 Figure 2 is a fragmentary side elevation view of the structure shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional viewy of my invention taken along the lines III--III of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevational view of a preferred form of fastening employed in the practice oi' my invention. I e
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 25 the numeral 2 designates, generally, akeg or barrel which is composed in part of a plurality of staves 3. These staves 3 are held together adjacent their ends'by a pair of band or head hoops 4, and intermediately thereof` by one o r more wire 36 bilge hoops 5. The inner surfacesof the staves 3 of the keg or barrelr 2 are grooved adjacent each of their ends, as'shown at 6, to provide a seat fora removable closure member 1, which is peripherally shaped to conform thereto, `as at d According to the usual practice, the' band or head hoops 4 are secured to the keg orbarrel 2 by conventional nails which extendthrougha number of the `staves 3 and into the removable 40 v closure membersj, with the difilculties previously recited. In order to obviate these diiiiculties, a
-novel combination is provided by the use of driven fastenings in the form of a nail I0 having a head l2, point I3, and an intermediately disposed driving stop or shoulder portion i4. As shown in Figure 4', this driving stop or shoulder Il is carried by .the shank of the nail lll and projects therefrom as a continuous annular flange. When the nails I0 are driven through the -band or head 50 hoops L through the staves 3 and into the removable closure members 1, the driving stops or shoulder portions I I contact the band or head hoops and maintain the heads l2 in spaced re lationship therefrom. This enables notonly an means for securing said head in said container, said fastenings each comprising a shank portion, a head portion and a stop-shoulder portion spaced inwardly from said head portion, said shank portion extending through said metal hoop and said 5 stave elements and into said container head member and said stop-shoulder being seated against said metal hoop and serving to space the head of said fastenings substantially away from said metal .hoop to permit ready engagement by 10 an extracting tool.
