NOVELTY BOX ELLIS B. STRICKLER v Patented Feb. 16, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to containers or boxes of the type used for various purposes such as for holding cigars, candies, and other merchandise.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved novelty box of the type comprising a base having mounted thereon two boxes or containers so formed and constructed that the device as a whole simulates a miniature bar or the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved novelty box having two separate compartments mounted on a single base.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved novelty box of the above type in which the separate compartments are each formed with hinged covers or lids, one of the lids being hinged to swing rearwardly and the other lid being hinged to swing forwardly of the device.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novelty box of the character mentioned, which is simple in construction, and reliable and exact in function under all conditions of service.
The invention also comprises certain new and useful improvements in the construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:-
Figure 1 is a perspective of a novelty box constructed according to my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan; and
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the improved novelty box comprises a base I I, preferably rectangular in form and constructed from wood' or any other suitable material.
The base I I supports two compartments I2 and I3, the compartment I2 being disposed adjacent to the front portion of the base and the compartment I3 being disposed at the rear of the base so as to leave a space between the two compartments.
In the form of the invention herein illustrated the device is adapted to simulate a bar, and therefore the compartments I2 and I3 are adapted to be so formed as to represent such a device in miniature.
With this in mind, the front compartment I2 has a front wall I4, rear wall I5, end walls I6 and a lid or top H. The lid or top is hingedly connected to the main body of the compartment I2 by hinges I8 secured to the rear wall I5. As shown, the front and side edges of the top I! extend outwardly from the walls of the compartment I2 a suitable distance so as to provide a ledge by which the top may be grasped when it is desired to swing the same on its hinges.
From the foregoing it will be noted that the front compartment is so constructed as to provide a container, substantially rectangular in form which is closed on all sides and top and in which various articles may be placed. If so desired, one of the uses to which the front compartment I2 may be placed is as a container for cigars. When so used the cigars may be packed vertically in rows in the compartment.
Since the lid or top H of the front compartment I2 is pivotally connected to the rear wall of the compartment, when the lid is swung to open position the same will be disposed in the open space between the two compartments, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 3. Since the lid IT can be fully opened, easy access can be had to the interior of the compartment.
As shown, the rear compartment I3 is formed with a front wall 20, rear wall 2|, end walls 22 and a lid or top 23 which is pivotally connected to the main portion of the compartment by hinges 24 secured to the front wall 20.
The rear compartment I3 is adapted to represent the rear portion of a bar and therefore the back of the lid or top 23 is extended upwardly a suitable distance as indicated at 25. Also, if so desired two shelves 26 may be mounted on the lid or top 23.
As shown, the front and side edges of the top 23 extend outwardly from the walls of the compartment I3 a suitable distance so as to provide a ledge.
Due to the fact that the upper portion of the rear compartment I3 is pivotally connected to the lower portion along the front wall thereof, when the top 23 is swung to open position as indicated by the dash and dot lines in Fig. 3, the back portion 25 thereof will rest on the top of the front compartment I2, thereby providing easy access to be had to the interior of the rear compartment.
A rod 28 is mounted on the base I I and extends around the front and both ends of the front compartment I2. This rod is spaced a suitable distance above the base II and is supported by a plurality of suitable members 29.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:-
A device of the class described comprising a base, front and rear compartments mounted on the base in spaced apart relation to each other, a lid hingedly connected to the front compartment and adapted to be swung rearwardly to occupy the space between said compartments, a lid hingedly connected to the front wall of the rear compartment, and an extended back portion formed on the lid of the rear compartment and adapted to rest on top of the front compartment when the lid of the rear compartment is swung forwardly on its hinges.
