APPARATUS FOR PERMANENTIJY WAVING HAIR Filed May 27, 1955 HTTORNEY Patented Feb. 9, 1937 UNITE ST PATENT OFFICE Julius Wenter, Budapest, Hungary Application May 27, 1935, Serial No. 23,564 In Hungary October 17, 1934 6 Claims.
This invention relates to hair-waving devices, the principal object of the invention being to provide a device of this character having means for maintaining the coils of the hair in sepa.- rated relation, in combination with means for exerting tension on said coils during treatment.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth, having means for supporting the curler and the necessary heating element, said means being effective to prevent burning of the scalp of the person being operated on.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a curling device in combination with a heating element having special means for removably securing the heating element and curler together.
In the drawing accompanying this specication,
Fig. 1 shows a hair waving device partly in vertical longitudinal section and partly in side elevation embodying the features of the present inventwigi, with a tress of hair wound in the curler;
Fig. 2 shows the clip-like supporting plate of the curler in plan, the full lines indicating the closed position and the dot-dash lines the open position thereof;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the curler;
Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate opposite end views of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the curler showing the hair-tensioning device in the outer or tensioning position;
Figs. 7 and 8 are transverse sectional views on an enlarged scale, taken respectively on lines VII-VII of Fig. 3 and VIII- VIII of Fig. 6.
The curler according to the invention consists of a preferably cylindrical spindle I, the surface of which is provided in known manner with teeth, pegs or pins 2, or the like, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 6. The said teeth may be arranged in the manner of a comb along one line or generatriX, as shown in the drawing.
This construction of the curler enables the tress of hair which is to be waved to be wound around the same in any desired manner, for example, in spirals of any desired pitch or in the form of a gure 8 and so on, without the danger of the coils mingling together or changing their position in any other way relatively to the curler and to one another. This is effected by means of the described teeth or pins between and in which the tress of hair is wound on to the curler, and which secure the coils in the form and position which they have been given.
In order to impart a smooth form to the waves which are to be produced, the tress of hair which has been wound on the curler must be tightened or tensioned accordingly before the curler is inserted into the heating device. `For this purpose according to the invention, the curler is provided with a semi-tubular member 9 which embraces the curler l on the untoothed side thereof and which is radially displaceable relatively to the curler I by means of a wedge member II disposed in an open longitudinal groove IIJ formed in the curler l, said groove having tapered end walls as indicated at I', Figs. 3 and 6, against which the ends of the wedge member Il, abut, while its peripheral edge is in contact with the inner surface of member 9. The wedge II is in position to be acted upon in a longitudinal direction by a screw l2 threaded into the end of curler I. In Fig. 3 this wedge-displacing device is shown before the displacement of the wedge, while Fig. 6 shows it after such displacement. The simultaneous axial and radial movement of the wedge Il is brought about by the fact that its tapered front end in contact with the similarly-inclined end wall of the groove I0 in the curler member I rides up on said end wall, and when it is displaced axially it is compelled at the same time to rise in a radial direction. The screw I2, which when screwed into the curler member I, strikes with its inner end against the wedge II, is provided at its outer end with a square portion I3 to enable it to b e rotated readily by means of a key. It is clear from Fig. 6 that in its displaced position the member 9 must tension the coils of hair lying on the curler. Obviously the displaceable member 9 may also be provided with the described hair-locating pins or pegs 2.
In order to facilitate the winding of the tress of hair which is to be waved and to hold it near to the head during the winding operation, and also to protect the scalp from being burned, a clip such as shown in Fig. 2 is provided. This clip consists of two plates 4 and 4 of heat-resistant elastic material, for instance, advantageously of soft rubber, which are connecte-d together by means of a hinge 6. After the hair which is to be wound has been placed between the two plates 4 and 4', the latter are adapted to be closed fast together by means oi any suitable closure device, which in the construction illustrated consists of a clasp fastener 1 as shown in full lines in order to clasp the tress of hair 8 between them near the jection preferably of rectangular cross-section, adapted to fit snugly intro an opening 3 of similar cross section Yformed in one end of the curler I so that when placedV on said projection 5, the curlerY is prevented from rotation relatively thereto. The
' ends ofthe semi-tubular member V9 of the curler Vallow the'passage of the Vscrew I2 at one end and are closed by plates I4 yan-dV I5 respectively having slot-like openings I4 and I5' respectively to the projection 5 Vof the clipat the other Yend.
'I'hese slots not only guide the member 9v of theV curlerl in its movement in radial direction and which likewise is supported firmly by thev clip by 'ratus prevent it lfrom becoming detached from the member I, but at the same time serve as spacersv to hold the curler at a uniform distance from the Y Wall of the heating element of the waving appa- After` the hair, which is'held firmly by Vmeans of theclip 4, 4 has been wound on to the curler means of the projection 5 on thelatter, the heatingielement I 6 which is known per se and is pref-YV erablyof channel-.shaped cross section, is placed on the curler. The heating element is provided Vwith a two-armed clamping lever'I8, which is hingedly connected'to the heater byV means of apivot I'I, one of the arms ofsaid leverbeing urged against the channel-shaped opening of the heat- 'ing element I5 by means of a spring, the said arm carrying'at its free end a foot member I9 by means of which it presses against the under side of the curler and holds the heating element I6 firmly tothe curler. i
