2` Claims.

The main object of the present invention is to yprovide a reinforced edge structure for mattresses and more particularly providing what is commonly termed a roll edge portion disposed within the mattress cover fabric to provide an invisible relatively stiff and conned marginal edge padding within the mattress and which is so located as to be supported upon the springs or other core structure of the mattress.

The invention is applicable particularly to socalled spring-lled mattresses wherein top and bottom layers of fabric are disposed over suitable spring assemblies and the latter and padding layers are enclosed within cover fabrics including the boxing strips of the mattresses.

A suitable embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a fragmentary plan sectional View illustrating a mattress constructed in accordance with the invention and taken on the line I-I of Fig. 2.

Fig. 2 is a vertical, sectional view of the same taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.

Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail vertical sectional view on an enlarged scale, taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

In the said drawing there is shown a Very cornmon type of all metal spring assembly comprising a plurality of hour glass springs I which are connected with each other by means of helical springs 2 and 3, respectively, the helical springs 3 constituting marginal members for the entire assembly.

It will be understood, of course, that the helical springs 2 and 3 are disposed along the tops and bottoms of the springs I.

In ordinary practice, the spring assembly comprising the elements I, 2 and 3, is covered with sheets 4 of burlap or other suitable fabric. Suitable padding 5 is disposed upon said fabric covers the latter being covered, in turn, by the cover ticks 6 which are secured along their marginal edge portions to a suitable boxing strip 1.

In the instance illustrated, the boxing strip 'I is of the quilted type and consists of two sheets or strips of fabric 8 and S, respectively, which are secured together by stitch chains along their upper and lower edge portions to conne padding of a suitable nature between said strips 8 and 9.

In order to provide more stiilly padded marginal portions along the marginal edges of the spring assembly, I provide a strip I of suitable fabric which is folded upon itself and is provided with a hem I I at a suitable point between its side edges, the hem being preferably of appreciable width for reasons hereinafter pointed out.

The marginal portion of the skirt I2, constituting part of the fabric strip III, is secured in a suitable manner, along its free edge portion, to the marginal edges of the sheet 4 of burlap or the like so that the hem I I becomes spaced appre- 5 ciably from the upper face of said sheet 4. The said free edge portion of said skirt and the portion of the sheet 4 to which the same is secured, are both suitably attached to the marginal springs I of the assembly or to the helical spring 3. 10

After said skirt I2 has been secured to the marginal edge of the sheet 4, as for example by means of a stitch chain I3, padding I4 is introduced underneath the loose portion of the strip I5 to which the reference character I0 is applied in the drawing. The said padding I4 is preferably crowded into place within the confines of the po-rtions I0 and I2 of said strip and the marginal portion I5 of said portion I0 of said strip is then secured by stitch chain I6 to the sheet 4 marginally of the latter and spaced from its marginal edge to confine the padding I4. Thus the strip I0 cooperates with the sheet 4 to provide a casing for the padding I4 which extends peripherally of the entire mattress structure.

After the said strip I 0 has been filled with the padding I4 and the stitch chain I6 has been provided, then the padding 5 is disposed upon the balance of the sheet 4 and the cover tick 6 is disposed over the said padding 5 with its marginal edges lapped upon the hem I I of the strip I0.

Similarly, the boxing strip 'I, which may be of the quilted or any other suitable type, is disposed with its marginal edge portion lapped against the hem II, and, thereupon, said marginal portions of the boxing strip and the marginal portion of the upper fabric 6, are secured to the hem II by means of a stitch chain. Preferably, a strip I'I of tape is folded over the marginal portions of the cover tick 6 and the marginal edge portion of the boxing strip I and is secured thereto by means of the stitch chain I 8 which passes through the edges of the tape I 'I, the marginal portions of the cover tick 6 and boxing strip I and through the hem II to produce a iinished tape-edge marginally of the mattress.

Obviously, the foregoing operations are identical at top and bottom of the mattress with the result that the finished structure is equipped with the irm marginal padding enclosed in the casing formed by the strip I0 and is disposed for support directly upon the marginal springs I of the spring assembly.

The sheets 4 of burlap are merely exemplary of suitable coverings for the upper and lower ends 2 of the springs l, the invention being applicable to all types of spring assemblies for mattresses and the coverings of same, without departing from the invention as dened in the appended claims.

Reference is had to Letters Patent to L. A. Suekoif Nos. 1,411,227, 1,397,021, 1,755,715 and 1,776,400, and Letters Patent to A. Suekoff, Jr. No. 1,053,765 to show types of spring assemblies for spring-filled mattresses to which the present invention is applicable as well as the same is applicable to all types of all-metal spring assemblies.

I claim as my invention:

1.1n a mattress comprising a core portion, covers for the top and bottom surfaces thereof, fabric casings extending marginally of and secured to each of the said covers and each thereof comprising a strip of fabric equipped with a continuous hem between and parallel with its side edges, one of the side edge portions of said strip constituting a skirt portion and being secured along its edge portion to the peripheral edge portion of said core and a wall portion secured along its marginal edge portion to said cover at an appreciable distance inwardly from the peripheral edge of said core, said strip constituting a casing disposed over the marginal edge portion of the cover, padding lling said marginal casing and supported upon the core, padding disposed over said cover inwardly of and partly overlapping said marginal casing, a cover tick disposed over the last-mentioned padding and having its peripheral edge portion secured to the hem of said marginal casing, a boxing strip disposed peripherally of said core and said marginal casing and secured along its upper edge portion to the said hem.

2. A mattress comprising a core consisting of a suitable spring assembly equipped with top and bottom covers secured thereto and extending to the peripheral edges of said assembly, padding filled marginal fabric casings secured along the peripheral top and bottom edges thereof and to said covers inwardly from the said peripheral edges of the spring assembly, each of said casings being equipped with a continuous outwardly projecting flange along its outermost portions, padding disposed over the remaining surfaces of said covers, cover ticks disposed over said last-named paddings and having their marginal edge portions secured to the said flanges of the marginal casings, and boxing strips secured along their upper and lower edge portions to said flanges of said marginal casings.
