S CYTHE GRI P Filed May 29, 1956 Inventor flugwz 57 275022,
Attorneys Patented Feb. 2, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in grips or handles for loop-type scythe snaths.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel grip or handle for scythes which can be readily positioned in place without likelihood of the same becoming loose or selfadjusting itself on the snath.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a grip or handle of the character stated which can be readily adjusted to the proper position on the snath without difficulty.
These and various other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following specification.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal sectional View through the handle and snath;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the handle and snath with the handle partly in section;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detailed sectional view of one end of the handle;
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the handle.
Referring to the drawing, wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 represents the snath and numeral 6 the handle which can be of wood or some other suitable material. One end of this handle 6 is reduced as at I and disposed into the collar 8. The collar 8 is also provided with a reduced portion 9 around which the band 10 is disposed. This band I is closed at one side excepting for the slot II and its closed side is provided with sharp corrugations l2 which bite into the snath 5. Numeral I3 represents the loop provided with the elongated shank M, which shank is split for the major portion of its length, as denoted by numeral IS. The butt end of the shank I4 is provided with threads I6 over which the threaded cap I1 is disposed and wood screws [8 are employed with this cap I! for securing the same definitely in position on the handle 5.
The handle 6 is provided with a bore therethrough for receiving the shank l4 and the loop I3 is provided with inwardly extending teeth or spurs l9 for biting into the snath 5. Obviously, the Wood screws I8 can be removed and the cap I! tightened to draw the loop I3 snugly around the snath 5 so that the teeth l9 will bite into the same while the sharpened corrugations l2 on the band ID will also bite into the snath.
While the foreging specification sets forth 13 the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A handle for a sickle snath comprising a handle structure provided with a longitudinal opening therethrough, a ferrule at one end of the handle provided with a reduced extension, a cap member slidably disposed over the reduced extension of the ferrule and provided with a diametrical slot therein, a snath encircling loop having a portion thereof disposed intothe slot and provided with a shank for disposition through the longitudinal opening in the handle, securing means between the shank and the handle, said cap having its slotted side of arcuate shape to conform with the curvature of the snath, and rows of snath biting ribs on the slotted side of the cap.
AUGUST ERIKSON.
