This invention relates to an improvement in knitting, crocheting or similar work and has for its object to provide a novel material for use in conjunction with such work so that a product produced thereby will be of novel appearance, will possess exceptional wearing qualities, and will be highly attractive and saleable.

More particularly, the invention relates to the utilization of leather or other material of like characteristics, made in the form of a lengthy or continuous yarn, strand or thread of such cross-sectional shape and size as to permit of its being used for either hand or machine knitting, crocheting or like work. An article constructed of knitted or crocheted leather is attractive in appearance, possesses exceptional sturdiness and resistance to wear and has other advantageous characteristics at once apparent to those skilled in the art.

In the accompanying drawing, wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating a ball or skein of leather yarn or thread, and also illustrating diagrammatically a section of knitting produced by using a thread or yarn of leather, and Fig. 2 is a view of a section or flat disc of leather showing how a lengthy thread or yarn-like strip is spirally cut from the piece.

The material used in producing the improved knitted, crocheted, or other like structure is preferably a lengthy or continuous strip, strand, or thread of a soft, suede-like leather or like material. The cross-sectional shape of the leather employed may vary according to the manner in which the thread is produced and the yarn so produced is of such cross-section as to readily permit the leather thread or yarn to be used for knitting or crochet work, performed either by hand or by machine operation.

In Fig. l, 3 indicates a strip, strand or thread of leather of a suitable size and cross-sectional shape to permit it to be knitted or crocheted, as diagrammatically illustrated at 4 in the same figure. The knitting there shown is produced by hand operation in the conventional way, such as when a woolen, silk or other thread is employed. The method of knitting, when a leather strand or thread is used, need not vary in any way from that employed when other materials such as wool or the like are used. For convenience in handling and use, the leather strand 3 may be wound in a ball or skein, as shown at 5 in Fig. 1. The strand or thread 3 may be produced in various ways from a flat sheet or section of leather, such as shown at 6 in Fig. 2, and to provide a lengthy or continuous strand or thread, I find it desirable to cut the strand or thread upon spiral lines as indicated at 'l in Fig( 2. In this way, a very long, thin thread or strand can be produced from a sheet or fiat section of leather of relatively small size. The strand or thread may be produced either by hand or machine cutting.

The type of leather used for knitting or crochet Work is preferably a soft, suede-like material so that the resultant knitted article, a portion of which is diagrammatically shown at 4, is soft and pliable and if the article is one of wearing apparel, it will satisfactorily fit.

An article knitted or crocheted of leather as herein described possesses toughness and resistance to wear and when leathers of different colors are used, the appearance of the finished article is comparable to and as fully attractive as an article composed of woolen or silk yarn or similar material. Knitting made of leather may be employed not only for the construction of knitted or crocheted articles of wear, but for hlandbags, pocketbooks, and other useful arti- 0 es.

I am aware that relatively heavy and stiff leather strips have been plaited or woven to produce various articles. Such articles as these, utilized a very heavy and stiff leather incapable of use in a knitting operation. The resultant Woven products were also too stiff and inflexible to enable satisfactory articles of clothing or like materials to be made from them. I, therefore, make no claim to the production of woven articles using heavy thong-like sections or pieces of leather, since the leather employed in the production of the articles to which this invention has reference is a leather which is soft and pliable and results in the production of an article which has the softness, pliability, and flexible characteristics of an article knitted or crocheted of wool or similar yarn.

In referring herein to the production of a thread or yarn of leather, I wish to be understood as meaning not only a real leather material, but an imitation leather or material of similar characteristics as real leather.

In referring herein to knitting, I wish to be understood as meaning any of the well known looping processes performed either by machine or hand work and generally grouped under the term knitting.

What I claim is:

A knitted article in which the yarn forming said article comprises a very long thin thread or strand produced from aflat sheet of soft suede-like leather.
