Description
Jan. 12, 1937. J. H. BALMI ER RECESSED WALL FIXTURE Filed Jan. 8, 1936 I INVENTOR. .faknflfialnzer KM/w ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 5 Claims.
This invention relates to wall fixtures and has particular reference to an improved anchoring means for wall fixtures of the recessed type which are embedded in a recess in the wall with a cementitious material for securing the fixture in place.
The invention also comprehends a recessed wall fixture which includes a hollow body open at the front and provided with a lateral outwardly directed marginal flange at the front thereof together with an ornamental frame adapted to be located between the wall and inner surface of the flange in covering relation to the margin of the recess and secured in position by the improved anchoring means.
As a further object the invention resides in the provision of a recessed wall fixture which may be installed alone or in combination with anyone of a variety of variously contoured ornamental frames which are produced as units separate from the fixture whereby when said frames are assembled and installed with the fixtures, they present in their entirety a variety of designs from which selections may be made.
The invention more particularly contemplates an improved anchoring means carried by the portion of the body which is disposed in the wall recess and which anchoring means consists of a transversely bowed strip having longitudinally spaced apertures and secured adjacent its opposite longitudinal edges to the fixture body so as to define a plurality of arcuate anchoring straps adapted to be embedded in the cementitious material so as to receive and form bonding keys located between the straps and the fixture body.
Other objects of the invention are to provide an improved recessed wall fixture which is not unduly complicated in its construction and mode of installation, which may be economically produced and installed and which is eflicient for its purpose and attractive in appearance.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, the invention is more particularly set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawing wherein the preferred embodiment is disclosed, while the claims cover variations which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a recessed wall fixture illustrating the same installed.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fixture as viewed from the rear in order to disclose the improved anchoring means.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken approximately on a plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, l designates a hollow fixture body which in the present instance is of a horizontal cross sectional semi-elliptical shape and which is open at the front and formed with a lateral outwardly projecting continuous marginal flange ll, preferably integral with the fixture body. As is customary in this type of fixture, the rear or major portion of the body to is designed to be positioned within a recess I2 in the wall IS with the flange ll extending over and covering the margin of the recess I2, a cementitious material l4 being introduced into the recess in a plastic state to serve as a means for retaining the fixture in place.
In order to securely anchor the fixture, an anchoring means is provided which in the present instance consists of a pair of identical anchoring strips l5 each of which is transversely bowed and secured adjacent its opposite longitudinal edges l6 and I! to the fixture body with the strip in a vertically disposed position. The forward edge I! of each strip is disposed at an angle to the side of the body and inclined slightly forward to form an anchoring shoulder when embedded in the cementitious material M which resists strains and stresses exerted outwardly on the fixture. Each strip is further provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced apertures [8 which provide a number of arcuate anchoring straps which are embedded in the cementitious material I4 so as to receive portions thereof which form bonding keys K which are located between the straps and the fixture body.
These types of wall fixtures are used for various purposes, namely, tumbler holders, soap dishes, toilet tissue rolls, etc. In the present disclosure, the fixture is intended as a combined soap dish and grab handle and the grab handle I 9 is carried by a pair of brackets 20 which protrude outwardly from the flange and are secured thereto. The lower portion of the fixture is provided with an extending lip 2| which is secured to the lower lead of the flange II.
In order to vary the general ornamental appearance of the fixture, an ornamental frame or escutcheon 22 is provided, the outer edge contour of which may be varied in shape or design.
The frames 22 are manufactured as elements independent of the fixture body and are of a size to fit over the body It] in rear of the flange H, the frame rails being of such a width as to extend beyond the outer edges of the flange rails to expose the ornamental contoured edge portion. When the ornamental frames 22 are used,- they are installed so as to lie between the fixture flange II and the outer surface of the wall l3 and are secured in place by the anchoring devices l5 which constitute a common means for anchoring the fixture in the wall recess and for retaining the flange in assembled relation, therewith. Obviously, this affords the customers"- a wide variety of fixture designs as' -a-ny one of;
a number of variously contoured frames may be optionally installed with each wall fixture.
What is claimed is: y Y el 1. In a recessed Wall fixture; anchoring means carried by the portion of the fixture body diswithin the wall recess-said means comprising a vertically disposed transversely bowed strip having longitudinally spaced apertures and secured adjacent its opposite longitudinal edges to the fixture body and defining a plurality of arcuate anchoring straps adapted to be embedded in a cementitious material to receive the same and form bonding keys located between the straps and the fixture body, one edge of the strip being disposed at an angle to the side of the body to provide an auxiliary anchoring shoulder.
3. In a recessed wall fixture, anchoring means carried by the portion of the body disposed in the wall recess,- said means comprising a channel member secured to said body portion so as to define together therewith an open ended tunnel adapted to be embedded in a cementitious material for entrapping said material therein to ,form bonding keys.
In a recessed wall fixture including a hollow body openat the front and having a lateral outwardly projecting marginal flange at the *front*thereo'f; a plurality of variously contoured or11amental{rarit es each adapted to fit over the fixture body and between the flange and the wall, and -of a size to extend beyond the flange for optional v assembly with the rfixtureibody to vary the ornamental appearance of the fixture, and a'common means for anchoring the fixture' in the wall recess and forretaining the frame. in assembled relation 'therewithl 5. A recessed wall fixture including a hollow body open at the front, a lateral outwardly directed marginal flange at the front of said body, an ornamental frame of I greater width than the flange adapted to be positioned between the flange and "the wall .adjacentthe'recess so as fixture. t I
