Description

Jan. 12, 1937. R. F. PECK 7,
BLOOME'R UNDERGARMENT FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS Filed Sept. 17, 1934 as 32 Fl 4 33 Crofcfi INVENTOR RUTH E PEcK WMdW ATTORNEYS Patented Jan. 12, 1937 UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE BLOOMER UNDERGARMENT' FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS Application September 17, 1934, Serial No. 744,322
3 Claims.
My invention relates to a bloomer undergarment for women and girls and has for its object to provide such agarment having a short straight front with a median length to the crotch substantially one-half of the length from the end of said front'rnedian line'at the crotch along the median line of the back to the waistline and which has fullness extending directly back at the crotch, and wherein there is an effective reinforcement at the lower end of the front'median line and beginning at'the crotch.
This reinforcement is in the form of a double insert running down the insides of each leg member and having ear portions which extend over the unbroken fabric at this crotch point and make a double reinforcement at the pointof maximum strain.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a "garment wherein, notwithstanding the full'ness at the seat and consequent comfort in wearing the garment, the garment will cling closely about the hips and limbs of the wearer in any position of the limbs.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a section of elastic at the bottom of the leg sections, preferably at the end of the insert piece and on the inside of the legs, which will hold the bottoms of the legs smooth and. tight.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and its novel features are particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing which represents the application of my invention to a form of garment embodying the same, Fig. 1 is a plan view of the front of the garment. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the back of the garment. Fig. 3 is a plan view of reinforcing pieces employed at the crotch. Fig. 4 is a plan view of similar pieces adapted to use both as crotch inserts and for crotch reinforcement of a garment with longer legs. Fig. 5 is a view of the complete garment with one leg folded inside of the other. Fig. 6 illustrates the garment in position on the form of a wearer. Fig. '7 illustrates the garment on the form of a wearer with one of the limbs in extreme position.
As illustrated, the front I is formed of a single piece having curved top portion II and curved side portions I2, l3. These side curves extend from the waistline as at M to the true bottom of the leg member as at l and will be longer or shorter as it is desired to have the legs of the garment longer or shorter. The front of the garment is short and straight along its median line I8 as clearly indicated in Figs. 1, 6, and 7 from the point l9 at the lower end of the median line 8, and at exactly the front of the crotch is a cleft as indicated at 20. This cleft may be substantially in a continuation of the median line l8, and be relatively long, as in Fig. 6, or it may be more widely expanded as desired. The back member 2| likewise has a curved top margin 22 and curved side margins 23 and 24, which from the point 25 at the waistline to the point 26 adjacent thebottoms of the legs (long as in Figs. 1 and 2) are of substantially the same length as the outwardlycurved side margins I2 and I3 of the front member IE). In either form the median line 21 'of the back member 2| is very much longer than the median line I8 of the front member II]. This median line extends from the center of the curved top margin 22 to the center of a cut-out bottom ,7
portion 23a. This cut-out portion will be relatively long where the legs are long, as in Fig. 2, but in any case will be substantially equal to the length of both sides of the cleft in front member H].
In practice, the curved edges I2 and I3 of front member ID are sewed to the corresponding edges 23 and 24 of back member 2|. This curve is such that with any normal figure the front of the garment will cling about the form of the wearer, outlining with its sides the figure line from the waist over the hips, and (except with the stepin) the figure line along the sides of the legs. To the edges of the cleft 20 are sewed crotch insert pieces 28, 29 and overlying reenforcement strips 30, 3| for the longer leg bloomers, as in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive. The greater length of the insert pieces 28, 29 over pieces 30, 3| is to allow for a hem on the lower edges of pieces 28, 29. Thus after the hems are formed the pieces 28, 29 will be of the same length as the pieces 30, 3| so that the greater length of pieces 28, 29 shown in Fig. 4 does not have any effect of lengthening the legs and the two sets of pieces cooperate for reinforcement by reason of the overlapping ear-like extension 32, as hereinafter pointed. out.
In all the above forms of garments, and indeed in any undergarment of the bloomer type, there is a point of maximum strain at the beginning of the crotch proper at the lower end of the median line of the front, as at IS in Fig. 1. This frequently results in tearing or ripping and an early destruction of the garment. My invention provides means for specially reenforcing this point of maximum strain and weakness. As in Figs. 1 to 7 inclusive the members 28, 29 and 30, 3| are each provided with an ear-like extension 32 which has a curved edge 33 formed continuous with the outer edge 34 of the insert and reenforcing pieces. These pieces have the edge 34 at the beginning of the curved edge 33 sewed to the edges of the cleft 2B. The ear portions 32 underlie the fabric of the front II) as indicated in dotted lines at 35. The curved edges 33 and the top edges 36 of the ear portions 32 underlie and are sewed to the fabric of the front, and the inner curved edges 31 are sewed together along their lengths, part of the way under the fabric of the front. The inner edges 38 of the pairs of members 28, 3B and 29, 3! are then sewed to the curved bottom edge of the back 2|, as at 3B in Fig. 7, thus completing the legs of the garment so that with the insert and the back there is fullness straight back at the crotch as indicated at 39 in Fig. 5.
At the bottoms of insert and reenforcing members 28, 30 and 29, 3|, a strip of elastic is inserted tending to gather the end of the insert at Al in Fig. 5. The bottom edge of the bloomer member, where made with longer legs as in Figs. 1 to 7, is formed to fit snugly against the limb of the wearer, and this gathered portion permits the wearer to draw on the garment and then holds the edge of the bloomer smooth and tight around the limbs of the wearer. The gathered portion is entirely on the inside of the legs Where it cannot afiect any garment worn over the bloomers.
The advantages of my garment will be appar ent from the foregoing description. It provides a garment which fits smoothly and snugly along its front and sides to the form of the wearer, and at the same time gives ample fullness directly back from the point of the crotch on the median line of the front of the garment and into the seat of the garment. point of weakness and maximum strain at the front of the crotch are provided to make this point exceptionally strong. This reenforcement is carried along the crotch to the back and down Means reenforcing the r the legs of the garment, and the gathered portion at the bottom of the insert and on the inside of the legs only, provides exceptional smoothness and snugness of fit of longer legged bloomers for wearing under close-fitting or contour frocks.
I claim:
1. A bloomer garment comprising front and back members having curved side edges of substantially the same length said curved side edges being secured together, the front having a center cleft and the back a central bottom cut-out portion having an edgesubstantially the length of the edges of the center cleft, crotch insert pieces sewed to the edges of the cleft and the edges of the bottom cut-out portions of the back and to each other at one end, said insert pieces provided with extensions overlying a portion of the uncut front of the garment and sewed thereto and to each other to form extra reinforcement at the front of the crotch.
2. A bloomer'garment comprising a back and a front having an uncut portion adjacent the crotch, crotch insert members sewed to the front and back to extend between said front and back at the legs and along the crotch, each of said insert pieces provided with an extension overlying a portion of the uncut front of the garment and sewed thereto and to each other to form extra reinforcement at the front of the crotch.
3. A bloomer garment comprising a back and a front having an uncut portion adjacent the crotch, crotch insert members sewed to the front and back to extend between said front and back at the legs and along the crotch, each of said insert pieces provided with an extension overlying a portion of the uncut front of the garment sewed thereto and to each other to form extra reinforcement at the front of the crotch, the lower edges of said insert members forming a continuation of the bottom margins of the legs.
