Claims.
This invention relates to brake shoes of that type in which a ductile metal back is embedded in the body to reenforce and strengthen the shoe and to hold the parts of the body together in 5 case of fracture.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a strong and substantial reenforce back which can be made from a rolled steel section.
Another object is to provide an improved anchorage between the back and the body of the shoe to insure retention of the parts of the body in event of fracture.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated the invention in a car shoe and referring thereto Fig. 1 is a plan view of the reenforce back showing the outline of the body of the shoe in broken lines;
Fig. 2 is a side edge View of the back, partly in section and also showing the outline of the shoe in broken lines; and
Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sectional views on the lines 33 and 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, the back 5 consists of a rolled metal strip having a central section B and side sections 7. The top surface of the central section 6 is higher than the top surface of the side sections 1 and this forms steps 8 at the juncture of the central section and the side sections. The bottom of the central section may have a longitudinal recess 9 of less width than the top of the central section, and the side edges of this recess are well within the area of the steps 8 so that the thickness through the back between the side edges of the recess and the steps will not be less than the thickness of the side sections. The thickness of the recessed central section may be considerably greater than the thickness of the side sections. The side sections of the back are recessed and struck up at H) to receive and accommodate the inturned legs of the lug strap II. Between these struck up portions I0 and the ends of the shoe the cross section of the back is uniform with a high central section and low side sections. There are openings l2 in the side sections and openings IS in the central section at the ends thereof. These openings are elongated and of substantial length and two of the openings I2 are located alongside the 50 openings l3 at each end of the back.
In the operation of casting the body on the reenforce back the body metal will run through the openings l2 and over the side and end edges of the back and lie flush with the top 55 surface of the central section from the center attaching lug to the ends of the back. The body metal will also fill the openings [3 in the central section and since the openings l2 and I3 are quite large the amount of metal filling the openings will be substantial and provide strong end portions for the shoe and secure anchorage with the back. The body metal on the outer surface of the side sections of the back abuts the steps 8 and lies flush with the outer surface of the central section and this body metal is connected 10 with the metal in the enlarged elongated openings I2 and with the body of the shoe at the side edges of the back so that it provides a substantial anchorage with the back. Projections l4 from the body enclose the legs of the lug strap and with the lug strap constitute the center attaching lug of the shoe. The body metal also fills the recess 9 and increases the strength of the shoe.
I can make the reenforce back of a rolled strip with the central section much thicker than the 0 side sections and thereby provide a strong and substantial back which will last as long as the body of the shoe under ordinary service conditions. The thickness of the central section may be increased, if desired, by omitting the recess 9. The side sections are stepped down from the outer surface of the central section so that the body metal will flow thereover during the casting operation and bind together the slugs of metal in the openings l2 to securely anchor the a body to the back.
I have shown the invention in a form suitable for car shoes of a common type but I reserve the right to make any changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts to adapt it for other shoes or for other reasons Within the scope of the following claims:
I claim:
1. A brake shoe back comprising a rolled metal strip having a central section and two side sections, the side sections from the center portion of the back to the ends thereof being stepped down from the central section and providing a back of uniform cross section from the center portion to its ends having a central section thicker than the side sections, the central section being provided with an opening adjacent each end and the side sections being provided with elongated openings. 5

A brake shoe back having a central section extending throughout its length, and side sections extending from the center portion of the back to the ends thereof, said side sections being stepped down from the central section, said central section being thicker than the side sections and said sections having openings therein,

A brake shoe back comprising a rolled metal strip having a thick central section extending throughout its length, and side sections extending from the center portion to the ends of the back, said side sections being stepped down from the outer surface of the central section and there being a recess at the back of the central section between the side sections and of less Width than the central section, and said central and side sections having openings therein.
4. A brake shoe comprising a body, a reenforce back and an attaching lug, said back consisting of a rolled metal strip having .a thick central section extending throughout the length of the back and thinner side sections extending from the attaching lug to the ends of the back, said side sections being stepped down from the outer surface of the central section, there being openings in the central and side sections, the body metal extending through said openings and over the outer surface of the side sections to embed the side sections in the body and lying flush with the outer surface of the central section.
5. A brake shoe comprising a body, a back embedded therein and an attaching lug, said back consisting of a rolled metal strip having a central section extending throughout its length, side sections extending from the attaching lug to the ends of the back and stepped down from the outer surface of the central section, there being a recess at the back of the central section of less width than the central section, said central section being thicker than the side sections and said sections having openings therein, the metal of the body extending through the openings in the side sections and embedding the side sections and lying flush with the outer surface of the central section and also filling the recess at the back of the central section.
