.INVENTOR .J ATTORNEYS.:
Patented Dec. 1, 1936 UNITED STATES ROLL AND BUN SLICER Harry J. Crner, Davenport, Iowa, assignor `of t n one-half to A. G. Bush, Davenport, Iowa.
Application April 4, 1935, Serial N o. 14,653v
6l Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in bun and roll slicers.
The objects of my invention are to provide a roll and bun slicer ofsuperior simplicity, ease of operation and having a long-edged slicing blade which will insure smooth cutting and which will be adjustable for buns and rolls of different sizes and also adjustable as to depth of Ycut so as to permit a bun or roll to be sliced entirely through or to be sliced to any desired distance leaving a hinge uniting two portions; also to provide a superior feeding and discharge means.
I accomplish these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in l5' Which,-`
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my machine on the line I I of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of my machine but with a portion of the housing broken away to disclose details of the carrier;
- Figure 3 is a side elevation of my machine with feed and discharge chutes attached, but with a portion of the carrier housing broken away;
Figure 4 shows an outline of one of the adjustable guide plates, 5; and Y Figure 5 is a sectional detail on the line 5--5 of Figure 4.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views. My appliance comprises a base, IS, having feet, 20, formed integral therewith having a supporting column, 2 I, cast integral therewith and extending upwardly therefrom. A supporting lug or bracket, I8, is cast integral with the base and extends upwardly therefrom and carries a bolt or shaft, I'I', one end of which is threaded to receive a wing nut, I1.
A boss or hub, 2|', is formed integral with the column, 2|, near the middle thereof, and an axle, 9, is rigidly mounted in the hub, 2|', extending laterally therefrom.
Upon the axle, 9, I revolubly mount a carrier, I, which comprises a pair of circular side plates united by an annular rib, 3, and having spaced 5 radial arms, 2, formed integral therewith but separated on the middle line by a slot, 2', which slot is wide enough to provide free clearance for the cutting blade, IIJ, thereafter described.
The carrier, |,is revolubly mounted upon the i0 axle,S. A collar, 22, is fitted over the axle, 9, and secured thereto by a pin, 9. A cap, 23, is secured to the outer side plate of the carrier, I, by bolts or set screws, 24, and covers the end of the axle, 9, and collar, 22, 5 The radial arms, 2, provide a series of pockets around the periphery of the carrier, I, of suicient size to hold an ordinary bun or roll .and these pockets may be shaped as desired to fit each particular case or a plurality of interchangeable cari riers may be provided having different shaped F5 pockets therein.
Upon the outer faces of the side plates of the carrier, I, I form integral therewith bosses, Ii, which are located centrally with reference to the pockets.
In each of the hubs or bosses, 6, I mount a pin, l, which is secured in place by Va set screw, 8. Upon the inner end of each pin, l, is mounted aA v guide plate, 5, and these guide plates. are adjustable by means of the set screws, 8, so as to provide '1"5- for buns or rolls of different thicknesses and they may be adjusted so as to cause the buns carried by Y the carrier to be sliced at Vthe middle of the bun or to either side of the middle as desired.
In order to provide means for slicing the buns, 26 l Y' I provide a pairV of semicircular arms, I I, each of which has a head, I2, pivotally mounted at the top of the column, 2 I, upon a pivot bolt, I3. A'slicing blade, I0, is interposed betweenthe arms, I I, and
secured in place by set screws, I0. 25 At the lower part of the arms, I I form integral therewith lugs, I 5, which are provided with a slot,
I6, through which the bolt, I'I, projects, thus af-` fording means by which the position of the arms,
I I, maybe adjusted tocontrol thefdepth of cut 3d of the blade, I0. To the arms, II, I united housing plates, II',
which are wide enough to enclose the openings in the pockets of the carrier and extend approximately the same distance as the cuttingblade.l This housing, II', is adapted to prevent the rolls from being displaced outwardly during the slicing operation and secures them in the carrier until they` reach the discharge chute. Y A bolt, 26, is rigidly secured to. the outer side 40 plate of the carrier, I, having a handle, 25, pivotally mounted thereon by which the carrier may be revolved, or if desired, the handle may be omitted and the carrier driven by belts, 3| and 32, from a motor, 29, as shown in Figure 3. Any suitable form of motive power may be used as desired. Y A feed chute, 35, is mounted upon a support or bracket, 35, which may be united to the base by bolts, 34, and is preferably made Vtrough-shaped so as tocarry the rolls, 4U, on edge toI the car- 50 rier, I. Y
A discharge chute, 39, may likewise be attached Y to the bracket, 35, in a' position to receive and carry away the sliced buns as they leave the carf rier. The chute, 36, may be supported by a brace,
31, united to the bracket, 35, or by other suitable means.
`In the operation of my device, the guide plates, 5, are adjusted to carry rolls of the desired thickness and center them with reference to the cutting blade, IB. The rolls are then fed down through the chute, 3B, of the carrier turned by the handle, 25, or by the belts, 3l and 32, as desired. As soon as a roll enters one of the pockets between the radial arms, 2, it is carried forward by the carrier into contact with the upper portion of the cutting blade, l0, where the cutting operation begins and continues until the cut is complete at the lower end o-f the blade.
The arrangement I have shown gives a very long cutting edge which facilitates the smooth cutting of the buns or rolls and avoids crushing or jam-l ming thereof, it being very important in cutting fresh rolls to have a long cutting edge -as only a limited pressure can be applied to the rolls by the cutting blades without tending to crush and distort them.
While I have shown my cutting apparatus in vertical position, I do not'limit my claims to that position nor to the precise forms shown in the drawings, as it is obvious that many modifications thereof may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I do not limit my claims to the precise form of knife shown in the drawings.
It is likewise obvious that the buns may be carried byV radial arms projecting from a single K side plate instead of by opposed radial arms.
I claim:
