IDENTIFICATION MEANS' FOR SPOOLS AND BOBBINS Filed NOV. 25; 1935 GBMQIQZQ Jr."
Patented Nov. 17, 1936 IDENTIFICATION i AND BOBBINS ron, Slicers George B. Markle, Jr., Hazleton, Pt. I I
Application November 25, 1935, Serial No. 51,525
1 Claim.
This invention relates to identification means for bobbins and spools, the object being to provide a bobbin or a spool with an identification disc inset in the head thereof to allow the op- '5 erator to quickly identify the different operations in the winding of silk and rayon yarns without any danger of the yarn becoming discolored by coming into contact with said color identification means.
Another object of my invention is toprovide a bobbin or spool in which the head is provided with a recess in which the colored identification disc is seated, said disc and head being secured to the body of the spool or bobbin by screws passing through the disc and head, thereby utilizing the same drive screws for connecting the colored discs to the head employed for connecting the heads to the body.
Prior to my invention it was impossible to obtain the same uniform color in the manufacture of fiber heads for spools or bobbins where pigments were used to obtain the color in the fiber employed for forming the heads and I have found that by having the fiber heads of natural color and providing seats to receive colored discs, a very strong and durable bobbin can be formed which will have many advantages over bobbins of this kind now in use and the colored disc will be protected by having it seated in a recess.
The following additional advantages are obtained by the identification means as herein shown and described. The disc in one head rapidly identifies the top and bottom of said bobbin on the part of the operator in placing them on the spindles of the looms. By using different colors it can be determined the right or left twist in the spinning of the silk and rayon yarns. Different colors are also used to readily distinguish the number of strands per thread. Specific colors in shipping spools are applied to both heads where a manufacturer desires a certain color for his product. By assigning such color or color combinations to a given manufacturer on his shipping spools, it decreases the chance of loss when the empty spools are returned to the throwing mills. Difierent colored discs identify different qualities of silk or rayon yarn. Different colored discs, either in the same or complimentary color to the yarns wound on the spools, would enhance the display of silk and rayon yarns on the part of the throwing mills.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the ap pended claim.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bobbin or spool constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the bobbin or spool showing the colored discs inset in each head; and
Figure 4 is a vertical section showing the colored disc inset in only one head.
In the embodiment of my invention as herein shown, I have illustrated the same as applied to a bobbin or spool which comprises a cylindrical body with heads attached thereto and I wish it tobe clearly understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the exact shape and design of the bobbin or spool as my identification means can be applied to any form of bobbin or spool which has a head.
In the drawing I indicates a cylindrical body formed of any suitable material, 2 circular heads of fiber which are apertured to correspond with the bore of the cylindrical body and the apertures are surrounded by a circular recess 3 in which is inserted a colored disc 4 which is secured in position therein by screws 5 employed for attaching the fiber heads to the body I as clearly shown in Figure 3.
In Figures 1, 2, and 3 I have illustrated a construction in which the identification disc 4 is secured within each head 2 and these discs can be formed of any color desired and one disc can be formed of one color and another of another color.
v In Figure 4 I show a spool or bobbin comprising a cylindrical body 6 with fiber heads I, one of the heads being provided with a recess 8 in which an apertured colored identification disc 9 is secured by driving screws Ill employed for fastening the fiber heads to the body 6 and this construction is substantially the same as disclosed in Figures 1, 2, and 3 with the exception that only one head is provided with an identification disc.
It will be noted that" in constructing a spool 45 or bobbin in accordance with my invention that the identification discs are provided with apertures which register with openings formed in the heads so that the screws can be passed through these openings in order to allow the screws to be screwed into the body to attach the heads and identification discs in one operation.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a spool or bobbin compris- 55 stood that these heads can have one color and the T discs inserted therein another color so to obtain a color combination with the use of discs having contrasting colors from the heads. 7
What I claim is:
A spool or bobbin comprising a cylindrical body having a central longitudinal bore extending therethrough provided with apertured heads at each end surrounded by a circular recess, apertured identification discs disposed in the recesses of said heads, the apertures of said heads and discs being in alignment with the bore of said body, the apertures of saidheads and discs being of the same diameter as the diameter of the bore of said body forming an unobstructed passage- ,way throughout the entire length of said spool or bobbin and screws passing through said heads and discs into said body for connecting said heads to said body and said discs to said heads.
