There are a number of trade professions in the performance of which it is quite essential that the mechanic or artisan be provided with a kit of tools that are auxiliary to the professional tools of the particular tradesman, and having particular reference to the profession of house painter and interior decorator, the device of the present invention is designed to provide a compact, extremely portable and useful tool as an adjunct to the regular tools of the painter or decorator.

In the routine performance of a painters duties particularly on old work it is frequently nesessary to remove nails or screws from the surface of the work, either by bodily displacement or by sinking them below the surface of the work. Again it may be necessary to remove putty or old paint, or again it may be necessary to sand down the weather checked surface of the work to provide a clean smooth surface, therefore with the foregoing conditions in mind;

It is a prime object of the present invention to provide a compact combination tool that includes means to either dislodge a nail or to sink it from sight into the work in which it may be embedded.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a compact combination tool, means adapted to remove putty, old paint, dirt, tacks, etc.

A still further object of the present invention is to provide in a device of the character described, a novel screw driving means.

Another object of the device of the present invention is the inclusion of a half round steel file, the uses of which are obvious and many.

A further object of the present invention is the provision of a tool that readily lends itself to the use of a sanding block by merely placing a piece of sand paper or emery cloth around the several sides of the tool.

A still further object of the invention lies in the general combination of the several tools previously set forth, so as to provide a simple, effective, compact yet cheaply constructed device that will be entirely adequate for the service intended.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the combination tool embodied in the present invention.

Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof, taken at the left hand end of Figure 1.

Figure 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.

Figure 4 is an end elevation of the invention taken at the right hand end of Figure 1.

In the drawing, the reference character H indicates the body of the combination tool I0 which is provided, as shown in Figure 1 with a hammer head 13 and a claw 14 formed integrally with a central bolt 15 which extends through the body II.

The body I l is preferably formed of hard wood and is provided with an end plate IT to which the hammer head is also spot welded, while the opposite end of body II is also provided with an end plate [9.

As shown in Figure 1 the bolt I5 is partially threaded to receive a nut which when screwed tight upon bolt l5 causes the hammer head and claw to be firmly held in the body of the tool Ill. The free end of the bolt 15 is shaped as a screw driver by having inclined faces 22 and 23.

By referring to Figure 1 it will be noted that the upper ends 24 and 25 of the end plates H and 19 are inclined inwardly thus providing an overhang to better grip the ends 26 and 21 of the half round steel file 28.

The tool It] is also provided with a scraper as shown in the several figures of the drawing. As best shown in Figure 5 the scraping blade 30 is provided with a V shaped notch 3| the bottom of which rests against a centering pin 33 which extends upwardly from the undersurface 34, transversely of slot 35 and into the body I of the tool II]. An aperture 31 is formed near the center of the blade 30 and is adapted to receive a detent 39 formed centrally of the edge 40 of end plate 19.

It will be noticed that the thickness of the material of the body I I under the slot 35 increases as the distance from point A to point B. This construction has been adapted so that the lip 4| of tongue 42 can be sprung downwardly sufficiently to permit the scraping blade to be inserted in slot 35, the blade is then slid along under detent 39 until aperture 31 coincides with the detent after which the blade comes to rest in centered and locked position.

The blade 30 is also provided with an hexagonal aperture 44 which is well adapted to act as a wrench, to either loosen or tighten nut 20 on hammer bolt l5, when detached from its normal position and used as a wrench.

It is customary to describe the application or use of the invention under consideration, however it is believed that the practical application of the device of the present invention will be quite obvious.

The tool is primarily adapted for use by painters as an auxiliary tool to their regular equipment and is intended to facilitate the removal of nails that may be projecting from the work, either by driving them flush with or beneath the surface of the work or by using the claw to withdraw the nail. The scraper is well adapted to remove putty, old paint, dirt, etc., from the surface of the work. The screw driver is adapted to the use that any screw driver is put to, namely driving screws, or prying small objects from a given position.

The file can be used to smooth rough surfaces and likewise if used as a sanding block, a suitable sized piece of sand paper is wrapped around the tool as shown in Figure 3, the tool is then applied to the work as shown in Figure 3 wherein 41 indicates a piece of work whose surface can be readily cleaned and freed of dirt, checks, paint, etc.

I claim:

In a hand tool, a body portion, a blade, said body having a slot adjacent the underside thereof and forming a lip with respect to the lower surface of said body, a centering pin traversing said slot, an end plate, said slot being adapted to re ceive said blade, a second pin, said second pin being dependent from said end plate, said blade being formed with an aperture, said blade having one end bifurcated, said bifurcated blade end and said aperture being in cooperation with said pins respectively to center and lock said blade in detachable relation to said body.
