Description

Nov. 10, 1936. 1". P. EICHELSDOERFER REFLECTOR SIGN FOR AUTQMOBILE BUMPERS Filed Oct. 3, 1935 NE. T I:
INVENTOR.
M ATTORNEY.
mwdou/f' BY 7/L y wl Patented Nov. 10, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT- OFFICE REFLECTOR SIGN FOR AUTOMOBILE BUMP ERS
1 Claim.
My invention has reference to a reflector sign for automobile bumpers, and is designed for use on the rear bumper of a vehicle, so that the sign may be read by those approaching from the rear.
It is readily discernible in the day time, but is of special use under conditions of darkness, upon the sign being illuminated by the light of a car in the rear. By reason of the reflective powers of the sign any wording or insignia thereon is made to stand out in bold relief.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a sign of the kind described which can be readily secured in place on a bumper, and removed therefrom when it has ceased to be of use.
The above named, and other features and advantages of the invention will more fully appear from the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,-
Fig. 1 shows the invention in position when in Fig. 2 shows the same detached.
Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section on the broken line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The device is in the form of a framed card, the
body portion of which is made up of a sheet of celluloid or other transparent material 5, in rear of which is a reflector sheet 8, commonly known as film, the outer face of which is provided with a reflector surface, usually of a red color, and
capable of being illuminated by a bright light thrown thereon, especially under conditions of darkness. Another sheet I of cardboard or similar material forms a backing for the body portion, all of said sheets being provided at their top and bottom edges with metal bindings 8 and 8.
The ends of the body strips are further held together by means of metal straps Hi, from which are struck points I I, which are forced rearwardly through the several sheets of material and bent in rear thereof, forming fastenlngs for the ends of the sheets. Said straps are of a flexible character, and the projecting ends I! at the top and bottom thereof can be bent in rear of the bars of an automobile bumper, indicated at it, holding I the device securely in place, and at a point where it will be readily visible to those approaching the car. It will also be noted that the device is secured on the bumper without the use of bolts or similar fastening means. 10
The device is made use of for a sign or advertising card by providing the outer face of the sheet 5 with letters or other insignia, as indicated at I4. These can be painted thereon or placed thereon with adhesive material, and stand out 15 against the bright color of the reflector sheet, after the manner of a neon sign, and so as to be easily readable at all times.
Variations can be made in the character and arrangement of the sign. For instance, all of the go face oi the sheet 5 can be coated except the letters of the sign, which are left open, in the nature of a stencil. In this arrangement the letters appear to be luminous by reason of the reflector backing. 25
After the purpose of the sign has been fully carried out the device can be readily removed from its position on the bumper.
What I claim, and desire to secure, is:-
A sign for automobile bumpers, comprising a 3 sheet of transparent material, a sheet of reflector film in rear thereoi, adapted for illumination by a bright light thrown thereon, opaque means applied to said transparent sheet to form'insignia thereon, and a binding for said sheets including 35 end pieces provided with flexible extensions ior attachment to the opposite edges of an automobile bumper.
