Description

Nov. 3, 1936. M. c. McWHERTER INNER TUBE FOR PNEUMATIC TIRES Filed Nov INVENTOR WITNESS Patented Nov. 3, 1936 UNITED STATES m OFFICE man was FOR rm-zum'rrc mas Miles 0. McWherter, Derry, Pa. Application November 13, 1935. Serial N5. 49,595
lclalm.
For a complete understanding of my inven- 1 tion, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view illustrating an inner tube constructed in accordance with my invention. 20 Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view showing the inner tube adapted to a pneumatic tire.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the inner tube.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral l indicates an outer elastic tubular wall provided with an opening 2 to receive the usual inflating valve 3. Arranged in the wall I is a tubular elastic inner wall I joined to the outer wall. as illustratedat 5, so that the opening 2 30 extends therethrough permitting the inner end of the inflating valve to be disposed inwardly of the inner wall 4. The inner wall 4 is slit circumferentially and arranged in overlapped relation. as shown at i. The overlapped portions of the inner wall at spaced intervals are joined, as shown at I. The inner wall 4 is of an increased diameter over the diameter of the outer wall I.
An inner tube of the character'described when 5 inflated by air pressure. said air pressure will equalize around the inner and outer faces of the inner wall so that when the outerwall l is punctured or ruptured, as shown in Figure 2, the inner wall at this point moves away from the m outer wall to prevent puncturing thereof so that when the air escapes through the puncture or blowout of the outer wall I, the internal pressure against the inner face of the inner, wall 4 will force the latter tightly over the rupture or puncture of the outer wall and partially seal the same so that the escape of air will be gradual or slow from theinner tube. consequently obviating rapid deflation of a tire equipped with the inner tube.
Having described the invention, I claim:
An inner tube comprising an outer elastic tubular 'wail, an inner elastic tubular wall arranged in said outer wall and of a diameter greater than the diameter of said outer wall, said inner wall being split circumferentially to form overlapped portions, said overlapped portions being Joined to one another at spaced intervals, said inner and outer walls joined together at one point and provided with an opening therethrough, and an inflating valve mounted in said opening.
