My invention relates in general to toys and in particular to an animated representation of a bird.

It is well known that ordinarily an animated toy is more attractive to children than a stationary toy. A toy gun is always in favor. Combining these popular actions, I provide an animated bird mounted on a pistol-like body member and actuated by a trigger-like member on said body member.

It is an object of my invention to provide an attractive, sturdy toy, susceptible of continued, hard use.

A further object is to provide such a toy, which is simple, light in weight and very easy to operate, and it is also an object of my invention to provide a very inexpensive device.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the following description taken with the drawing, in which:

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the U-shaped mounting bracket.

In practicing my invention I provide a pistollike body member for carrying in the hand, with the representation of an animated object in a toy figure pivotally mounted on the top thereof, and operating mechanism carried in the body member cooperating with figure-connecting means to effect a swinging pivotal action of said figure.

Referring now to the drawing, in Fig. l, I illustrate the complete toy of my invention with a pistol shaped body. member I I having a. toy gure I2, representing a bird, pivotally mounted on the body member. The body member includes a buttshaped handle portion I3 for holding in the hand, and a hollow barrel I4 secured thereto. A removable cap I6 closes the open end of the hollow barrel I4. The barrel and handle assembly comprises more particularly a rounded chamber I'I at the top of the handle I3 having an opening I8 at the front thereof. The end of the barrel I4 extends into the chamber I'I as shown particularly in Fig. 2 and is spring locked therein by an indented portion I9 in the wall of the chamber I 1 fitting into a corresponding aperture 2| in the barrel. This provides a very inexpensive and readily assembled construction for the housing which will withstand continued, and extensive abuse by a child.

The toy gure I2 is mounted on the barrel I4 by a pivot pin 22 extending through downwardly- (Cl. liti-419) extending legs 23 on the gure itself and through the barrel I4. The toy gure is moved in a swinging action from the pivot pin 22, by actuating mechanism as will be hereinafter described, operating through interconnecting means rigidly secured in the figure I2 itself.

The interconnecting means more particularly comprises a U-shaped bracket 24 as shown in Fig. 3 having outwardly extending ears 26 on each side of theupper closed portion. These ears t into slotted apertures 2l on each side of the figure I2 and are spring locked therein. The bracket 24 further includes downwardly extending legs 28 and 29 rwith leg 28 slightly shorter than leg 29 as shown in Fig. 2. The lower portion of each of the legs is slightly offset from the remainder thereof and has a slot 3| opening upwardly from the lower edge.

Carrying out the representation of a bird in the toy ligure illustrated, a swinging` action of the figure pivoted from the pin .22 is provided so that upon actuation of the operating mechanism the head of the bird bobs up and down in char-, acteristic fashion. The operating mechanism cooperating with the bracket 24 in the pivotal mounting heretofore described to obtain this swinging action includes a reciprocating bar 32` carried in the barrel I4 and slidably mounted over the pin 22 in an elongated aperture 33. The reciprocating bar has a toothed or serrated upper edge 34 and a downwardly extending fingerhold extension 36 protruding through a slot 31 in the bottom of the barrel. The finger-hold extension 36 resembles a trigger on a gun and is pulled backwardly in the usual manner when gripping the handle I3. A spring 38 carried on the end 39 of the reciprocating bar and resting against the end of the chamber II acts upon the bar 32 to return it to its normal inoperative position after the movement of the trigger 36. As to the operation of the device, the bracket 24 rigidly secured in the figure I2 is positioned so that when said figure is mounted on the pivot pin 22 the legs 28 and 29 extend through apertures 4I and 42 respectively and the slots 3l in the legs ride over the toothed edge 34 of the reciprocating bar. With the rear leg 29 of the bracket slightly longer than the front leg 28, the figure I2 leans forwardly and when the trigger 36 is pulled to move the reciprocating bar, the figure bobs up and down as though picking up an object from the barrel I4.

Although I have described the toy ligure as a representation of a bird, it is understood that I may employ the likeness of any animate object,

inasmuch as this action obtained with my nvention will be attractive to children as applied to any object. The toy as illustrated and described is simple and inexpensive both from the standpoint of cost of material and cost of assembly. It is sturdy, yet attractive as to appearance as well as operation.

Although I have described my invention in its preferred embodiment, it is understood that I do not limit the invention thereby, but limit it only by the scope of the appended claims.

I claim:

l. In an animated toy, a body member for carrying in the hand, a toy figure pivotally mounted on the body member, a reciprocating bar in said body member, and means interconnecting said bar and toy figure whereby to effect an oscillating pivotal action of said figure upon each stroke of the bar.

2. In an animated toy, a body member for carrying in the hand, a toy gure pivotally mounted on the body member, a spring returned reciprocating bar carried in the body member, a finger hold extension on said bar, and means interconnecting said bar and toy figure whereby upon pulling of said finger hold the bar is actuated to effect with a single stroke an oscillating pivotal action of said gure.

In an animated toy, a body member for carrying in the hand, a toy gure pivotally mounted on the body member, a spring returned reciprocating bar having a serrated upper edge carried in the body member with its serrated edge above the pivotal axis of said figure, a finger hold extension on said bar, and means riding on ,said serrated edge of the bar and spaced lengthwise of said bar from said pivotal axis and connected to said toy figure whereby upon pulling of said nger hold said bar is actuated to effect with a single stroke an oscillating pivotal action of said figure. In an animated toy, an actuating mechanism including a spring returned reciprocating bar having a serrated edge, a housing for said mechanism, a toy figure pivotally mounted on top of said housing, connecting means riding on said serrated edge at spaced points and extending from said serratedredge through the top of said housing to said figure, and a finger hold extension on said bar extending through the bottom of said housing adapted to be pulled to move said bar to effect a swinging action of said figure through the connecting means.

5. In an animated toy, a body member for carrying in the hand, a toy gure raised above the body member having downwardly extending legs pivotally mounted on said member, a reciprocating bar movable in said member, and means interconnecting said bar and toy gure to effect a swinging pivotal action of said figure upon actuation of the bar, said means including a U-shaped bracket having downwardly extending legs with each slotted at the end thereof and riding on said bar at the slots and with the closed end of said U-shaped bracket rigidly secured in said toy figure.

6. In an animated toy, a body member, a toy ligure, a stationary pivot in said body member for mounting said gure above said member, actuating mechanism in the body member and interconnecting means extending therethrough to the toy figure cooperating with said actuating mechanism to effect an oscillating pivotal action of said figure on said stationary pivot, said toy gure resembling a bird and being inclined with its head close to said body member whereby its oscillating pivotal movement makes it appear to be eating or pecking.

7. In an animated toy, a pistol shaped body member including a hollow barrel and buttshaped handle, a toy figure, having downwardly extending legs, a stationary pivot pin extending through the barrel of the pistol and the legs extending downwardly on each side thereof to pivotally mount the figure on the barrel, a spring returned reciprocating bar in the barrel having an elongated aperture for fitting over said pivot pin and to slide thereon, and means interconnecting said bar and toy gure whereby to effect a swinging action of said figure on said pivot upon actuation of the bar.

8. In an animated toy,'a body member, a toy gure pivotally mounted on the body member, an actuating member therefor movably mounted on said body member and having a serrated edge facing away from the pivotal axis of said gure, means for moving said actuating member, and means riding on said serrated edge and connected to said toy figure whereby a single movement of said actuating member effects an oscillating pivotal action of said toy figure.

9. In an animated toy, a body member, a toy gure pivotally mounted on the body member, an actuating member therefor movably mounted on said body member and having a smoothly curved serrated edge, means for moving said actuating member, and means riding on said serrated edge and connected to said toy gure whereby a single movement of said actuating member effects an oscillating pivotal action of said toy figure.

l0. In an animated toy, a body member, a toy figure pivotally mounted on the body member, an actuating member therefor movably mounted on said body member and having a serrated edge, means for moving said actuating member, and means riding on said serrated edge and connected to said toy figure whereby movement of said actuating member effects an oscillating pivotal action of said toy figure, said toy figure resembling a bird and being inclined with its head close to said body member whereby its oscillating pivotal movement makes it appear to be eating or pecking.

11. In an animated toy, an actuating mechanism including a spring returned reciprocating bar having a smoothly curved serrated edge, a housing for said mechanism, a toy figure pivotally mounted on top of said housing, connecting means extending from said serrated edge through said housing to said figure, and a finger hold extension on said bar extending through said housing adapted to be pulled to move said bar to effect an oscillating pivotal action of said figure through the connecting means.
