- SIGNAL BUTTON STRUCTURE Filed Aug. 50, 1934 Y .9 I. 3mm
i J. J/'asmf Patented Sept. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a signal button structure primarily designed for use in connection with the modern or conventional type of iire hose apparatus and particularly in a signal circuit means attached to the hose, its nozzle, or otherwise.
The improved button and its circuit venables the members of a re-ighting force to signal the engineer, who is usually distant therefrom, from time to time as more or less pressure is required or it is desired to discontinue or resume the supply of water.
The more specific objects and advantages will in part be pointed out hereinafter and otherwise become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with ac companying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing the invention applied to the nozzle of nre-fighting hose;
Figure 2 is a view primarily in longitudinal section, with the parts separated to disclose details;
Figure 3 is a view primarily in longitudinal section through the protector;
Figure 4 is an end elevation of said protector;
Figure 5 is a central longitudinal section through the nut member;
Figure 6 is a central longitudinal section through the plug member; and
Figures 7 and 8, are primarily longitudinal sections of the contact members employed.
Referring specically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts, the preferred and illustrated construction of circuit closer or button for controlling the signalling system embodies a thimble or nut 3, of which the reduced portion 4 is designed to receive the extremities of conductors 6 and I and in the body portion of which is threaded a fiber or insulating plug 5 bored to form seats for the terminals 6, I to which the extremities of the conductors 6 and I are attached and which are respectively provided with openings or sockets 8 and 9 to facilitate such attachment. The terminal I has a threaded opening Il! at its outer end for the reception of a screw I by which a switch tongue II may be attached thereto to bridge the interval between and come into contact with the terminal 6 when actuated by the stem I2 of the push button I3 slidably mounted in a barrel I4 which screws onto plug 5 and which stem is yieldingly held retracted by a spring I4 in a recess in said barrel and heldin place by a barrel I' screwed to barrel I4'.
As above indicated this circuit closer mechanism including the signal button and related parts is adapted to be carried by the hose nozzle N or by one of the distributing or consolidating hose coupling members, and for the protection thereof to prevent accidental operation thereof, with the resulting vconfusion so far as the engineer is concerned, a protector I5 is preferably used to embrace the same, such protector being particularly shown in Figure 1 and being designed to enclose the button I3 and the adjacent parts of the device and being provided with a cap or disk I6 normally closed by a spring I 6 having an operating knob I1. This protector may be made either of hard rubber or of metal such as steel, according to whether it is used on the hose nozzle orupon one of the hose coupling members where it is subject to pressure by the feet of passersby or vehicles attempting tocross the hose. It will be noted by reference to Figure 1 that in order to obtain access to the button to close the circuit it is necessary to turn the cover or cap back by pressure on the knob I'I and then insert the finger in the end of the tube I5.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
What I claim is:-
A device of the class described comprising a thimble adapted to receive the terminals of a pair of electric conductors, said thimble having an enlarged portion, a plug of insulating material screw-threaded into the enlarged portion, a pair of spaced contacts carried by said plug, one of said contacts extending beyond the plug into said enlargement and in engagement With the end wall of the enlargement in the thimble and have ing an enlarged portion provided with an angularly disposed socket, one of said conductors being disposed terminally in said socket and the other conductor being engaged With the other contact, said enlarged portion preventing displacement of said one Contact outwardly from said plug, said plug projecting beyond the thimble, a barrel threaded on said plug beyond the thimble, means carried by the plug operative to bridge the contacts, and means carried by the barrel operative to actuate the last mentioned means.
